Guest Interview ~ Meg Leigh

Today we’re excited to welcome Meg Leigh – another of our fellow Sapphic Planet Anthology contributors!

Why don’t you start by telling us about yourself (Where are you from? What do you write/do in the publishing world? What do you do when you’re not writing — your “day” job, hobbies, obsessions, etc.?)

I am Australian, born and raised here and what the old timers used to refer to as a “Pure Merino” which means I am a third generation Australian by birth. I write both Lesbian (f/f) and Gay (m/m) fiction and have in the past, dabbled in het romance. My first published work was actually a het romance novel. I don’t have a day job, as I had to quit work due to a physical incapacity. That gives me lots of time to procrastinate…er I mean write. Yes, that’s it. It gives me lots of time to write! My hobbies include breeding chickens. I am hoping to develop my own bloodline of my favorite breed, the Australorp. I am also teaching myself how to use DAZ Studio 3D with a little help from a good friend. I’d eventually like to use that for making graphic art to illustrate my writing, or for web design.

Do you own an ereader? Why or why not? If so, what’s on it?

I have an iPad and an iPhone 4 each of which is crammed full of eBooks. I have everything from Agatha Christie to Zathyn Priest and all the letters of the alphabet in between. I tend to buy a lot of books, and then not read them for ages, so I guess that makes me an eBook hoarder. At least it doesn’t take up a lot of space!

Tell us about your writing: How long have you been writing? What genre(s) do you write in? What have you written (short stories, novels, etc.)? What works are currently for sale? Where?

I don’t really know how long I have been writing. I come from a family background where telling ‘yarns’ was a tradition. I used to love visiting my grandparents where my sisters and I would sit enthralled for hours listening to Pop tell stories of his youth, or ‘bush yarns’ about people and places in his life when he was growing up. A ‘bush yarn’ is a story that is not necessarily true, but is told as though it was. For examples of this, readers could look for the fiction of Australian ‘Bush Balladeers’ Banjo Patterson or Henry Lawson. I learned the craft of storytelling through listening to these tales and I guess writing them down was the natural progression from there.

I have a few short stories on sale at present through my account at Smashwords.com: http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/megleigh

I also have a short story included in the new Sapphic Planet Anthology. My story is titled “Two Steps Back” it is a lovely erotic romance which I penned especially for the antho. It is the story of Juliet, an author who is struggling to rediscover her voice after battling a long illness. At the suggestion of her friend, Valerie, Juliet decides to take a weekend trip to a little Bed & Breakfast in the country. Her idyllic vacation is threatened though, when Juliet comes face to face with Heather, a woman from her past that Juliet had hoped never to see again.

The story deals with past betrayals and the concept of a second chance, both of which are some of my favorite themes in fiction.

What made you decide to write?

I guess that the answer to this question is covered above in the answer to the one about how long I’ve been writing. I didn’t make a conscious decision to write, but I do recall making a conscious decision to try and get published. I had spent a lot of years writing and sharing my work with friends, family and online pals but never thought about doing anything more with it, until quite a few of my friends began to say “You should be publishing your work for pay.” I figured that I must have developed a strong enough style and voice to give it a go. I submitted a short story for an eBook anthology and to my surprised delight, it was accepted!

What made you chose to write erotic literature in particular? Is there any other genre you’d like to write? And if so, why?

I like to write about human relationships whether erotic or just the stock standard day to day life stuff that goes on between families and partners. Erotica is a part of my writing, but I don’t really consider myself an ‘erotic writer’ in fact, when my characters want to have sex I often find myself wishing they’d go get a room and write it down themselves! *g* I tend to cringe and squirm my way through those scenes. Fortunately, no one has ever said that it shows in my writing. Maybe they’re just too polite? *bg*

How do you get ideas for your stories? What inspires you?

In a word, everything! I have seriously found inspiration in everything from a snippet of overheard conversation in a coffee shop, to a piece of paper blowing across the street. I am a keen observer of people, nature, and cereal boxes. I’ve even created characters based on the antics of my chickens!

Which comes first when you’re starting to write a new story: character, setting, plot, or theme?

It usually starts with a voice in my head. Sometimes I wonder if I’m not a writer at all, but just a nutcase who has learned to act out by writing things down, rather than actually going out and doing the things she imagines. Seriously though, I hear the characters talking. Sometimes it will be a line of dialogue. Other times, they’ll just start telling me their story and not stop until I have written it all down. I just transcribe, the “voices” do the creating.

Any advice for those who want to write?

One word. WRITE!

Oh, you wanted more than that? Hmmm ok. The best advice I can give someone who wants to write is not write what you know, but write what you love! Write things that ignite your spark, your passion. As far as writing what you know goes, you can learn and research just about anything, but if the stuff you’re writing doesn’t make your blood sing and your heart thud, it’s not going to do that for your readers either. WRITE and write what you LOVE.

Tell us about your first publication. What did you do to celebrate?

I danced around the house cackling insanely, shrieking “YES! Yes! Yes!” much to my partner’s alarm. She actually thought when she heard me shriek and then burst into wild laughter, that I was crying. She feared one of my kids had been hurt or worse. It took me about ten minutes to compose myself enough to let her know that it was actually good news.

Do you have a favorite character out of all the ones you’ve written? If so, who is it and why is s/he your favorite?

My favorite character of all time is “Alyssa” She’s the mother of Casey Lambeth in a novel I wrote called Hunter’s Dawn: Laying the Ghosts. Alyssa is actually a ghost and she was such fun to write. She has a very good sense of humor and was a fantastic comedic foil to the drama in that novel. It was kind of sad to say adieu to her at the end of the story.

Is there a way for fans and others to contact you?

I can be contacted via email at [email protected] and people can follow me on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Meg.Leigh.Author  or twitter: http://twitter.com/megleighwrites

Tell us about your latest release – we’d love an excerpt, too!

My latest release is my short story, Two Steps Back in the new Sapphic Planet Anthology. I gave a blurb a little way back so I will just add an excerpt here.

Excerpt:

Juliet turned her car into the driveway of the little country cottage and switched off the engine. She sat staring at the house for a few moments. This would be the first real holiday she’d taken since before…she closed her eyes, remembered pain making her breath hitch in her throat.

It must be easily four years, she decided. She’d come back from that last vacation to bad news. The niggling cramps and nausea she’d suffered on her vacation had led to a diagnosis that stopped her life for almost two years. That, and the time it had taken to recover her strength. Writing had been her only solace in those dark days, but as her health and strength returned, Juliet had increasing difficulty in finding ideas to put on paper. She sighed, shaking her head to clear the morbid thoughts and climbed out of the car.

Grabbing her overnight bag from the backseat she made her way onto the porch and rapped at the door with the brass doorknocker.

While she waited for someone to answer, Juliet closed her eyes, letting the gentle cooing of mourning doves in the surrounding trees seep into her consciousness. Other birdcalls began to filter in as she listened. She drew a deep breath, letting it out slowly. Maybe this break would be good for her, after all.

Juliet turned to the door as she heard the latch work, smiling as the door swung open to reveal a petite blonde woman standing just inside, smiling broadly in welcome.

Her smile froze in place as Juliet looked at the woman. She blinked, unable to believe her eyes, and took a backward step.

“Heather…” Juliet faltered, “I… “

“Jules!” Heather said, throwing the door wide and stepping out onto the patio. “Oh my God! It’s really you.”

“Don’t!” Juliet dropped her bag, holding her hands out as though fending off a blow. “Please don’t do that.”

Heather’s smile faltered. She stopped and let her hands fall to her sides.

“There must be some mistake,” Juliet said. There had to be. She would never have booked into this place if she’d known it would mean coming face to face with a woman she had thought—hoped, she would never see again.

The Key to Unlocking Creativity

THE KEY TO UNLOCKING CREATIVITY

Author Elizabeth Kyne talks about trying to hit the magic zone

from where great stories flow

Have you ever had one of those moments where you get lost in your work? Where, somehow, your brain becomes detached from your body and is absorbed into whatever you’re doing. You don’t have to be a writer to experience this, you could be a painter, a model maker or even a dancer. People will often say, “I lost track of time” and that’s because they were so in tune with their task, it’s almost as if it controls them, not the other way round.

As a writer, it’s those moments I strive for. It’s like my inner self has a connection to the page without being manipulated through the filter of my conscious mind. I can tap into my emotional core and express that through my characters, whether they are experiencing love, loss, anger or joy. It’s a very freeing experience and something that – when it happens – gives me that buzz that makes me want to come back for more.

Not as if everyone agrees with me. Some theories of writing great fiction state that every single word should be sweated over; that each sentence needs to be expertly crafted before it is committed to paper. The classic Irish writer James Joyce subscribed to this theory and is said to have a told a friend he had a good day working on his novel as he had written “three sentences”. Clearly, this approach has led to some highly regarded and influential works of literature, but is not the way I want to work or the sort of book I want to read. Indeed, I tried to read James Joyce’s Ulysses once and gave up half way through.

What I want from a book is a good story, characters with real emotions and to have a bit of fun. This, I would argue, comes from tapping into the inner self and letting that creativity roam free on the page. Because, deep inside me, are memories of all the books I’ve read, all the films I’ve seen, all the things I’ve experienced and all the emotions I’ve had. Where else should fiction come from?

Tapping into that creativity, however, is not always easy. These are some of the tips I try (but don’t always succeed) in following:

  • Distractions: Don’t have any. It’s obvious to say, but not always simple to implement. You can’t enter the creative zone if you’re constantly bothered by the email or the phone. This is why some writers chose to work in the dead of night. Personally, I like my sleep too much, but whatever works for you. When distractions are a serious problem, I sometimes use a program like Write or Die which fills up the whole screen and nudges you when you’ve stopped writing. Others recommend Freedom for Mac or Windows, which turns off the internet on your computer.
  • Dare to be bad: Don’t fret about every single word, sentence and paragraph. Just write it. If you start worrying that you’re writing is a load of rubbish, you’ll stop writing entirely and never find that link between your creative mind and the words on the page.
  • Don’t worry about it: This sort of follows on from ‘dare to be bad’, in that the most important thing is maintaining the flow, getting into ‘the zone’. So what if it’s bad? Bad can be improved, whereas nothing is still nothing at the end of the day. Also, don’t get hung up on details. For example, don’t spend half an hour trying to think up a name for your new character, just call him John or something and make a note to think of a better name later. Similarly, don’t stop to do some research. Make a note to check what Paris airport looks like or what type of gun a farmer would have in 1914 (or whatever it is) and keep writing.
  • Have a plan: This is somewhat counter intuitive to the above, but for me I’ve got to know what I’m going to be writing before I start. If things are going well, my plan might simply be a sketch of the scene I’m about to write. Eg., “Fred gets involved in a pub fight and breaks his arm”. If I’m struggling a bit, I might sketch it out in more detail: “Fred goes into pub, meets old girlfriend, gets a bit amorous, her new boyfriend turns up…” etc. I can then launch into writing my planned scenes for the day without having to stop and break the creativity.

If all is well, you will slip into that magic zone where the words flow, and you may surprise yourself at what you can write.

I say it like it’s easy, which isn’t always the case. Like many things, the theory is all very well and good, it’s not so easy to put into practice. Nevertheless, it is something to strive for, and something I continue to strive for every day. Sometimes I get hung up on details I shouldn’t be worried about, sometimes I take phone calls or check my email when I shouldn’t. Other people may have different distractions (I have great admiration for people who work at home while looking after small children, for example). The knack is to put them aside for your allotted writing time (be that as short as fifteen minutes or as long as a whole morning) and try to get into the zone.

Because life in the zone is amazing and what can sometimes come out of it is better than when you’re sweating over every word. When everything comes together, it seems like the novel is writing itself and, when you step away you have something which you know has come from somewhere special inside of you. That is what your creative brain has done, it has funnelled your instinct, your experience and yourself into the words.

Like the mountain climber, I try to reach it every day, and like a human being I do not always make it to the summit. But, for the days I do, it is worth the struggle.

Rachel re-invents herself when she moves back to her home town of Aylesbury; with a new job, a new house and a new haircut. But people’s eyes glaze over when she tells them about her life as a forty-something singleton who works in accounts. So why not spice things up a bit? Why not tell her new hairdresser and her new friends about her fantastic husband? Everyone wants to hear about Darren, the man who cooks her amazing meals, cleans the house and takes her to bed for orgasmic sex three times a night! What a shame he doesn’t exist…

…Until she comes home one night and finds Darren sitting in her lounge. And everything she said becomes true: from his sensuous food to his skill in bed. So real, that she believes it.

Not as if living with a perfect is man is… well, perfect…

She can’t find anything because every time she puts something down, he tidies it away. Then there’s the shock of the credit card bill from buying all that gourmet food. Not to mention the sex! Three times a night is great at first, but sometimes all she wants at the end of the day is a sandwich and some sleep.

Then Rachel decides that Darren has to go – and that’s when her troubles really begin.

Elizabeth Kyne takes the absurdities of the modern woman’s quest for love and turns them into an enjoyable romp. She finds the comic in everyday situations, from buying a dress to experimenting with hair dye at home. While, underneath, she comments on the pressure to find the perfect husband and how that quest is doomed for us all.

Elizabeth Kyne trained to be a radio journalist and spent her early working years reading news bulletins and writing for magazines. Later, after learning the meaning of “mortgage” and “gas bill”, she decided to do the sensible thing and drop the freelance lifestyle to get a proper job. The job, however, all went horribly wrong and she returned to her first love of writing, and worked on several novels before finding success with “If Wishes Were Husbands”.

Today we welcome Erotic Romance Author Dawne Prochilo to our blog!

Recently I did a blog for another author describing the day in the of an erotic romance author- with a touch of humor. Today I have decided to dig a little deeper into the life of a clumsy erotic romance author.

I have, in real life, been known to have a few embarrassing mishaps (ex. stepped into a bucket, foot got stuck and I danced around a gas station for a few minutes trying to shake the damn thing off my foot instead of bending over and removing it with my hands- OY). But what would happen if that same clumsy person was in the bedroom, in the midst of a moment of heated passion. Let’s find out-

She knelt down in front of him, unzipped his pants and started tugging the denim down his muscular thighs. She knew what lay beneath the fabric of his… mesh bikini underwear.

“What the hell!” The shock of his undergarment choice had her in a stupor. “Mesh bikinis?”

“Yeah,” he moaned. “A gift from my mom.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, mom wants the boys to be able to breathe so she can have grandkids one day.” His answer befuddled her.

Shaking off the surprise of his statement, she continued her trek to the hardening member beneath the… mesh. When his jeans were around his ankles, she reached beneath the netting of his underwear to expose his firm cock. In her attempt, the tip of his penis got caught on a piece of the gauzy material. She yanked harder, he moaned thinking she was getting rough.

“Oh yeah, baby! Take what you want!”

She growled low in her chest at the issue at hand but proceeded with her venture. She wanted to taste him, slide her lips over his cock and make him cum.

She jerked at his penis again but the damn mesh wasn’t giving in easily. His moan of pleasure frustrated her even more.

She moved closer to his body, her knees rubbing along the shag carpet, creating a nice rug burn on her left kneecap and tried to see what could be done to release his prick from the confines of his blasted underwear.

Raising her head slightly, she peered over the top elastic band and tried to see what the hold up was. As she leaned in closer and pulled on his penis, the hard shaft rebounded from the force and ricocheted back. Before she could blink or move, the hard tip of his penis hit he square in the eye.

“Ouch!” She released the firm rod and began rubbing her eye.

“You okay?”

“Yeah.” Tears running down her cheek. “Maybe we should try something else.”

“Oh, okay.”

Repositioning on the bed, they passionately kissed. “Do you want me to get BOB out and play for awhile?”

“Yes.” She purred at the thought.

Seconds later she felt the firm plastic of BOB rubbing on her clit. She moaned in anticipation waiting for him to hit the ‘on’ button. She squirmed under the touch of BOB teasing her most sensitive area.

“Damn!” He growled. “Batteries must be dead.”

“No, I just replaced them yesterday.” She whined.

“Hang on, wrong button.” He chuckled.

He hit the button and nothing.

“Let me try.” She hissed, the moment of passion was starting to dissipate. When she reached for BOB, he snatched it away.

“I can do it. Hang on.”

When he hit another button, the television turned on. “Oh shit! That’s the wrong thing.”

“Oh my God!” She covered her face with her hands.

Guest Blog: Cassandra Carr

We welcome debut Loose Id author Cassandra Carr to our pages today – congratluations, Cassandra, on your first release!

Seduced by a voice

In Talk to Me , the heroine, Jamie, is seduced by the hero’s voice. Drew is a sports talk radio host, and Jamie is his new producer. She has to listen to him for at least twenty hours every week and his raspy, sexy voice slowly drives her insane. Once he knows how much it turns her on, he uses his words to pull her in further.

It’s a proven fact that both men and women can be turned on by listening to someone speak. Sure, you can say that seduction is an art form, but there is definitely a scientific basis to it. Tone of voice is something that distinguishes men from each other, along with other things, like their unique smell.

Every woman is different, but they have one thing in common – if they’re lucky enough to run across a man with a great voice, they’ll respond. So what kind of voice turns you on? Are you a fan of a smooth, rich voice? A deep, commanding voice? Maybe, like Jamie, you prefer one with a bit of roughness to it. Tell me what you like in the comments below.

EXCERPT

The elevator doors opened, and Drew hurried to unlock his apartment and punch his code into the security pad before continuing straight to his bedroom. He spun and picked Jamie up as she neared the door, and she let out a squeak of protest.

“Drew!”

“What? I’m trying to be romantic. Efficient, too.” He grinned at her when she struggled to get out of his grip. The way she fought against him both amused and aroused him. “Not so fast,” he warned her. “I’m not planning to let you get away until I’m good and finished with you.”

Jamie cocked an eyebrow. “Good and finished? Be still my heart! Such dreamy talk from a man like you! I had no idea.”

Drew laughed and dropped Jamie on the king-size bed with enough force to make her bounce, then climbed on top of her. Before she could protest again, he’d pressed his erection into her belly and taken her lips in another deep kiss. Jamie melted beneath him, snaking her hands around his neck while his found her hips, pulling her closer. “You need to get naked,” he declared, rolling off her.

“Just me? That’s hardly fair. If I’m getting naked, then this time, so are you.” Her beautiful, full lips pouted at him.

He stood up, and in seconds, his pants and boxer briefs landed in a heap on the floor. He pulled his shirt over his head and added it to the pile. “Your turn.”

Jamie rose up on her elbows and stared at him in disbelief. “How did you do that so fast? And may I add, very nice.” She smiled and waggled her eyebrows, giving him a quick once-over.

“When I want something, I don’t waste time. And I want you naked. Now.”

He reached over and started yanking her top over her head, but she batted his hands away.

“Hey — stop that. You’re going to dislocate my shoulder with your beastlike strength.”

Drew laughed but allowed Jamie to gently pull her blouse over her head. He took it and tossed it on the chair near the window. Next she tugged her jeans off, leaving her in only her bra and panties, which Drew made short work of.

He groaned when she was fully nude. “God, you’re fucking gorgeous, you know that? And I’m gonna put my hands and my tongue and my mouth and my cock everywhere on and in your beautiful body, so you better be ready.”

Jamie shivered, and he covered her body with his, kissing her briefly before moving down her jawline, sucking and licking. This is gonna be good.

Guest Blog: Tim Smith

Today we welcome fellow Extasy author Tim Smith to our pages!

WADING THROUGH QUICKSAND

Here’s something you don’t run into on an author’s blogsite every day – a male author of straight contemporary romance books. Okay, I know what you’re probably thinking – “A man writing romance stories who gets the details right? It can’t be done!” Trust me, I get that a lot. I began published life as a writer of mystery thrillers set in The Florida Keys involving a former CIA spook named Nick Seven, who is always trying to stay out of the intrigue game but never manages to. Two of my three novels featuring this character won awards and I had a nice following. While they all contained romance and sex, I never considered writing a full-fledged romance novel. Why should I, when I had what appeared to be a niche career?

That’s when I decided to wade into the quicksand known as “contemporary erotic romance.” A few years ago I wrote a romantic comedy, Anywhere the Heart Goes. My friends who eagerly anticipated another Nick Seven thriller were aghast and asked me “How could you do such a thing???”  The answer is pretty simple. I was attending a book festival and while my books were selling well, I noticed other authors drawing bigger crowds. They were selling romance novels and after reading one of them, I thought it would be fun to write one of my own, but told primarily from the man’s perspective and with more humor. I also knew I could write something better than the one I’d read. This first one did well enough that I followed it with two more lighthearted erotic romances. I recently released a romantic intrigue story, The Bundle.

No matter what type of story I’m writing or where it takes place, I strive to make it as atmospheric as possible. I love it when a reader tells me they felt like they were in the scene with the characters. I use realistic dialogue, writing what I hear people say on a daily basis. I also take great pains to craft characters with human flaws and quirky personalities, to make them step off the page. I’m not a fan of cardboard characters and heroes who come off as perfect. The one difficulty I had to overcome when I switched genres was the way I wrote sex scenes. They were abundant in the first three books, but for this new market I had to turn up the heat and be more explicit. I’ll admit it was a little awkward for me at first, but I soon reached my comfort level and stopped blushing when I wrote something down and dirty.

I think of fiction writing as being in the entertainment field because that’s what writers do – we write to entertain. I don’t write for the critics – I write for the person in Rugby, North Dakota or Parma, Ohio who wants to escape the daily grind and lose themselves in a good story. I’m often asked what I think of reviews, and it’s a tricky one for me to answer because I am a reviewer for an online romance site. At the risk of shooting myself in the foot, I’m not convinced that a good review has that much impact on a book’s sales. I say that because no one has ever told me they bought one of my books because so-and-so gave it five stars.  The nicest compliment I can receive is when someone tells me they can’t wait to read my next one. Man, it doesn’t get much better than that!

I just released my seventh novel, The Bundle, through Extasy Books. This is the first in a series and lets me return to my mystery thriller roots. The main character is an ex-cop named Vic Fallon, and he’ll be the only recurring character, with a different gal pal to get involved with in each installment. The style harkens back to the pulp fiction writing of Raymond Chandler and Donald E. Westlake, with a dash of Mickey Spillane thrown in – tough hero with a romantic side, equally tough heroine who needs his help, atmospheric locations, wisecracking dialogue and some serious sex. What more could you ask for?

BLURB

Vic Fallon had little use for the rich and famous when he was a police detective, and his attitude hasn’t changed since he was forced to turn in his badge. When pop singer Kimberly Daniels returns to her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio to promote her latest album, Vic reluctantly agrees to be her bodyguard as a favor for a friend. He isn’t told that she has a death threat hanging over her head, with no shortage of suspects. The set-up takes a bizarre twist when her stalker shows up and Vic uncovers family secret Kimberly would like to keep hidden. Things get more complicated when they develop a strong attraction for each other, in spite of their different lifestyles. Can Vic ensure Kimberly’s safety until she returns to L.A.? Will Kimberly decide to ditch her glitzy celebrity life and stay with the rugged ex-cop she’s fallen for?”

Okay, now that you’ve read the trailer, here’s the feature. This is a PG excerpt. A hotter one can be found at Extasy. More information about all my books can be found at my website, www.timsmithauthor.com.

 “The Bundle” excerpt –

Vic took off his coat, tossed it on the bed in his assigned bedroom of the hotel suite then loosened his collar, removed his tie and contemptuously flung it onto the dresser. He slipped off his shoulder holster, hung it on the back of the chair at the desk and checked the safety on the Smith & Wesson .45. He took out the bottle of Passport scotch he’d brought with him, pouring some into a glass, followed by two ice cubes from the bucket. He eased himself into the padded club chair at the small cocktail table, stretched his legs in front of him and exhaled a deep breath. A day of mingling with the Tinseltown set left him wishing the job was over so he could return to his comfort zone.

He became aware of a presence and looked at the open doorway. Kimberly stood there, dressed in a pink velour jogging suit with her initials embroidered in red sequins on the left breast. She wore no shoes or socks. Her hair carelessly outlined her face, adding a degree of sexiness. Vic noted that the zipper on her top was halfway down, and she wasn’t wearing a bra. She offered a tentative smile that still retained a hint of shyness.

“Do you always drink alone or would you mind some company?” she asked in a soft, husky voice.

Vic set another glass on the table and pushed the bottle toward her. She settled into the chair across from him, poured some Scotch into her glass and added ice. She took a long swallow then set the glass on the table.

“Won’t Pasta object to you drinking with the hired help?” Vic asked.

“Right about now, Pasta’s cruising the bars, looking for a cock to wrap his lips around.  Won’t see him until morning.”

Vic laughed softly. “That answers one question I had.”

Kimberly gave him a look of surprise. “You thought Pasta and I were…?”

“Uh-huh.”

She laughed at the notion. “I wouldn’t pass the physical, but you’d better be careful.”

“I’ll sleep with my gun under my pillow.”

Kimberly took another sip and looked at Vic with a sultry glow. “You’re not what I expected. When Evan said he retained an ex-cop to look after me I thought you’d be older, with a pot belly and no hair.”

“Sorry to disappoint you.”

“I’m not disappointed.” She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, held it for a moment then slowly exhaled. “It feels good to be back home.”

Vic sipped his drink then cradled his glass while looking at her, appreciating her beauty.  He mentally compared what he now viewed in person to what he’d seen in the press and on the occasional TV show. The cameras didn’t lie. Kimberly Daniels was a beautiful woman. He recalled a sexy lingerie spread she’d done in a men’s magazine the year before and wondered if those photos were accurate as well.

“Are you really the sentimental type or was this trip a publicity stunt?”

Kimberly opened her eyes and laughed softly. “I could tell you weren’t too enthused about accepting this job.”

“Why would you say that?”

“I can read people pretty well.” She laughed again. “But I loved the way you stood your ground with Pasta. He’s not used to people talking back to him.”

“I’ll apologize to him over breakfast. Just what is his function?”

Kimberly downed the last of her drink and poured another. “He’s my personal assistant. I’d be lost without him.” She took a small sip. “So what’s my celebrity ass worth these days, bodyguard-wise?”

Vic eyed her for a moment. “Does it really matter?”

She shrugged. “Guess not, as long as you’re not complaining.”

“If I have any complaints I’ll let you know.” Vic refreshed his drink and changed the subject to something more pleasant. “I used to watch you on a local TV show when you still used your real name. You sang a few of the classic love songs and put me in mind of Sarah Vaughn. I really got hooked on the way you sang It Had to Be You. That’s always been one of my favorites and you nailed it.”

Kimberly smiled warmly at him. “Thank you. I love those songs. I grew up listening to them and memorized all the words.”

“Why not cut an album of standards instead of pop?”

“I wanted to with this new one, but my handlers wouldn’t let me. They all said the same thing. Give the public what they’ve come to expect. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Maybe we’ll do that project next year.” She smirked. “I hate being handled.”

“Why put up with it?”

“It’s part of the game and you have to play by the rules. Don’t you have rules to play by?”

“Only the ones I make up.”

She tucked a leg under her on the chair and appeared comfortable. “So tell me about yourself.”

“There isn’t much to tell. I used to be a detective with the Sandusky P.D., got shot in the line of duty a few years ago, still have trouble with my leg because of it and I take the occasional job to keep from getting bored. Other than that, I live on the lake in Sandusky, fish, drink too much and generally do whatever the hell pleases me. End of story.”

Kimberly laughed. “I know that isn’t the whole story. Evan told me all about you.”

Vic took a drink. Note to self: go to L.A. and kill the little bastard. “What did I leave out?”

“That you live in one of his vacation homes he uses as a tax write-off, you used to be married but it didn’t work out and you two roomed together in college. Before you got shot saving your partner’s life you were being investigated for beating the shit out of someone you arrested. Evan came to your rescue when they wanted to press charges.”

Addendum to the note:  book the flight tomorrow. “Guess we all live in a fishbowl. How did you go from being Callie Buchovic, local singer, to Kimberly Daniels, big time recording star and reputed diva?”

She arched her eyebrows. “Reputed?  I’d better talk to my publicist. Let’s see…after I was on that local show you mentioned I got a call from a network scout for the reality show So You Think You Can Sing? I won the national competition and was contacted by a record producer, then I had to get an agent, then an entourage and then my life snowballed into something I lost control of.”

Vic picked up on the indifferent tone in her voice. He was actually relieved to discover that the whole tabloid enfant terrible thing was all hype. “You don’t sound too happy about it.”

She looked into her glass and slowly swirled the contents before answering. “To be honest, there are times when I wish I was still a blue collar girl from Parma, Ohio. Do you ever get to Los Angeles?”

“Not if I can help it.”

“Why not?”

“Too many people moving too fast. I like my life a little more low-key. Hell, this is the first time I’ve been to downtown Cleveland in a couple of years.”

She smiled wistfully. “Sometimes I miss being here. Life was simpler then. Not so many people trying to grab a piece of me.”

Vic looked at her again but in a different light. Beneath the surface this wasn’t some grande dame commanding attention, but an angelfish navigating in a sea of sharks. “I don’t really keep up with these things, but wasn’t there something serious going between you and that actor, Justin Truax?”

Kimberly laughed. “Only in his publicist’s imagination.” She took another drink. “He escorted me to a music awards show and suddenly we were an item. There’s a lesson for you:  in Hollywood, be careful who you’re seen having dinner with. The press will have you married off or pregnant by the early edition.” She smiled slyly at Vic. “Were you asking about my availability for a reason?”

“Nothing more than idle curiosity.”

“Sure,” she skeptically replied. She drank the last of her Scotch and poured another slug. “Ever have any regrets in your life?”

“A few.”

“Such as?”

“Not hanging onto the gal who got away, picking the wrong lotto numbers, making the career choice I did. That’s about it.”

After taking another sip, Kimberly set her glass on the table. She looked at Vic with a silly expression on her face, leading him to believe she had probably had a few too many. She reached over, took hold of his hand and turned his palm upward. She looked into his eyes with a sultry gaze and lightly ran her fingertip along his palm.

“Ever regret never having made love to a famous singer?” she asked.

“What makes you think I haven’t?” he countered.

Touché.” She released his hand, sucked down the last of her drink and suppressed a hiccup. “So tell me something, Vic:  why should Pasta have all the fun tonight?”

Vic set his glass on the table and stood up. “Maybe we should discuss this when you’re not so… tired.”

Kimberly gave a wicked chuckle. “Wow, a gentleman. Don’t meet many of those where I live.”

Vic placed his hand on her elbow and gently prompted her to her feet. “Yeah, I get all Sir Galahad when I see a lady in distress. Come on.”

He escorted her to her room down the hall. When they arrived Kimberly abruptly turned, took his face in her hands and kissed him. Vic put his hands on her shoulders out of reflex, enjoying the kiss. He got a whiff of her perfume, but couldn’t place it. Whatever it was, it mixed perfectly with her body chemistry.

Kimberly looked up at him and smiled. “See you in the morning?”

“I’ll be here.”

He walked back to his room. Note to self:  lock the door!

Guest Blog: Age of Aquarius

We welcome fellow Sapphic Planet member Sofia Antonia Milone to our pages today. She and we are celebrating the launch this month of an exciting year long project, and her new book, Age of Aquarius, is the premier offering.

Let me start this by stating I am not a blogger, I’m barely even a writer. This is all new to me. It’s still fresh, and fun. I’m still reeling from the fact anyone thinks something I have written is worth reading, never mind publishing.

As with most things I end up doing I was standing in the wings watching, learning, and knowing that one day someone might say ‘can you do that?’ and I’ll find myself saying ‘Let’s find out.’

So here I am, with a small, unassuming book out: A novella, the first in a series named Sapphic Signs written exclusively by the authors of Sapphic Planet for Torquere Press. Why? Because everything is an opportunity, if you look at it from the right angle. Because it was time to see if I could.

Now I come to write this guest blog, a very kind offer from fellow Planeteer Adriana Kraft and once again I realise I have no idea what I’m doing. I ask myself why I deign to think I can do this. And then I remember why I started writing in the first place.

I started writing, as many do, out of frustration. The fiction that interests me, with gay women as central figures, is not to be found in abundance (yes, there are some great books out there, but not enough say I). And much of that which is readily available is riddled with cliché in both character depiction and plot.

I write because I am both an unsatisfied and dissatisfied reader. Even some of the great writers of lesbian fiction have fallen short for me and I find myself clinging desperately to the few stories I have loved, over and over again.

I write the type of fiction I want to read, and I want to read depictions of gay characters, central to a storyline, who are not embroiled in some coming out journey, but rather are just living their lives, during which something interesting enough happens that deserves to be written about. Be that murder, love, or alien abduction.

I’ve had my fill of sexual discovery, and I’m not even that interested in happy ever after. I hope to write about people who are real, with the struggles we all have. Characters who can be described beyond their sexuality. People who are identifiable, but not boring; Exciting, but not ridiculous; Gritty, yet sexy.

I am a romantic at heart, but I also don’t do soppy. I enjoy tales of rejection, or redemption. I like it when things are not smooth, not obvious, not easy; when life throws a spanner, when people’s intentions are unclear, or misinterpreted. I enjoy reading that people make mistakes, and screw up, and struggle to regain themselves. And I love when these things are never truly resolved, because I’m too old for fairy tales, and far too cynical.

If I’ve managed to achieve some of the above in such a short story remains to be seen. This story, Age of Aquarius, is a taster, a learning curve in how to craft a readable story with likeable, or at least believable characters. I wanted to learn about them as I wrote, and did a ridiculous amount of historical research in hopes of achieving a real sense of their lives in such a short space of time.

In the very least I’m very proud to be counted amongst the illustrious list of contributing writers at Sapphic Planet. If people like what I do I am confident they will let me know.

Of Unicorns and Centaurs

We welcome author George Pappas on his blog tour for his new release, Monogamy Sucks. My husband and I write erotic romance about swinging from a couple’s point of view. George writes erotica about swinging from a male’s point of view. Today the two worlds meet!

OF UNICORNS AND CENTAURS: The Hidden Role of Single Men in the Swinging Lifestyle

Everyone knows that unicorns are mythical creatures, but in the swinging lifestyle single women who are referred to as unicorns are very real and coveted by swinging couples.

Now, it is single men or centaurs as they are called, that are considered truly mythical or non-existent in the swinging lifestyle.

Contrary to popular belief, single men are not pariahs among swingers. One would never know that from popular movies, TV shows and magazine depictions of swinging as the sole domain of couples swapping partners or single women participating in threesomes with couples.

It is true that a lot swing clubs do bar single men from admission, but not all of them. I know this from personal experience.

My recently published novel Monogamy Sucks depicts the experiences of a single man in the swing world. My novel’s protagonist Jake Dalmas swings solo during almost his entire journey in a quest to expand his sex life.

Jake is a centaur in the full definition of the word, and he doesn’t want to be part of couple. It was my intention to feature another side of swinging rarely if ever discussed in books, movies or TV. Not everyone wants to be part of what I call “Couples Nation” — and honestly like my character — they don’t want the headaches and stress that at times accompanies romantic relationships.

Even a new Pew Survey says that 4 in 10 Americans think that the bedrock of all traditions, marriage, is becoming obsolete. Our society is changing. One could take from this that people are also thinking different about other sacred cows such as monogamy. Studies suggest that around 30–40 percent of dating relationships and 18–20 percent of marriages are marked by at least one incident of sexual infidelity, according to Close encounters: Communication in Relationships.  Some researchers say there’s a 50–50 chance today that one partner will have an affair during a marriage.  It is estimated that roughly 30 to 60 percent of all married individuals (in the United States) will engage in infidelity at some point during their marriage as referenced on the Truth About Deception Web site. It is food for thought.

I will go out on a limb and say that I believe a lot more couples than one might think desire to swing with single men. Some women (both in and out of the lifestyle) do actually fantasize about being with more than one man or with many men, but without strings or complications that could ruin their marriages or relationships. Most don’t act on these urges, but some do. This need for couples to bring single men into their sex lives may not be as popular as the more common fantasy (female, female and male) threesome, but centaurs are desired more than everyone lets on. Sexual boredom is a factor here no doubt.

Think of these single men as “stunt cocks” brought into a relationship to provide more or different kinds of pleasure for straight (or even bi-couples.)

In one key chapter in my novel (excerpted below), my character Jake is contacted by a young married couple that are horny on a Sunday morning. He ends up having sex with the wife, a hot blonde named Tonya, and engaging in his first double penetration experience.  After their passions were spent, Jake went back to his single life and they returned to their marriage. There are other instances in my book where my character is invited into sexual encounters with other straight couples.

So what’s a guy to do who wants to participate in swinging, but doesn’t have or want a wife or girlfriend?

You can start by going online and searching for swing clubs in your area that admit single men. There are many cool Web sites that cater to those interested in the swinger lifestyle.

Place an ad in a local swinger’s magazine looking to meet couples.  One good one to consider is the West Coast Sex Directory, but if you’re not on the West Coast you can find many others.  Take it from me: there are a lot couples looking to swing with men. You just need to know how to find them.

However, there are a couple of etiquette rules single male swingers should consider when swinging with couples.

·        Stay cool and never be pushy. You are a potential fantasy for a couple. Be a nice guy at all times. Don’t ruin a potentially enjoyable time by being an asshole.

·        Don’t lose your head. You are being invited into a couple’s private sexual lives — that’s all. The encounter is strictly sexual.  Don’t get confused. You will go home alone after the sex, leaving the couple to their relationship or married lives. This is sacrosanct. You are out to have a good time, not ruin anyone’s life.

For couples, inviting a single man into your bedroom is a wonderful opportunity to spice up your sex lives and explore fantasies women and men don’t always like to talk about, but no doubt want to explore. Set some ground rules and boundaries on what activities can be included in your swinging adventure. Everyone involved must keep their perspective about the outcome and meaning of the sexual fun.  Sex stirs up all sorts of emotions, but being honest about the erotic nature of a sexy rendezvous will save everyone a lot of heartache. If everyone remains cool and mature, the swinging lifestyle offers a great opportunity for wonderful, adventurous sex for both single men and couples.

Excerpt from Chapter 17 of Monogamy Sucks:

Don and Tonya live in a small apartment complex located off Pacific Coast Highway. It is an old surburban tract located in the middle an industrial area of refineries and old oil fields. As I walked toward their place I could hear an oil derrick pumping away in a nearby field.

A stocky guy with a Marine style crew cut greeted me at the door of their apartment. He said he was Don and shook my hand vigorously. He was wearing boxer shorts and a T-shirt.

“Come on in the bedroom. Tonya’s in the bathroom cleaning up. Would like you something to drink?”

I told him no thanks and walked into their bedroom. Apparently, they had been at it all morning. The covers of their king sized bed were pulled back and the sheets were wrinkled and torn off the mattress.

On a mantel, next to the bed were their wedding pictures. It was an uncomfortable reminder that soon I could be fucking another man’s wife in their wedding bed. It felt odd, but also very alluring.

I started removing my clothes and heard Tonya finishing up in the bathroom. A few moments later, Tonya stepped into the bedroom and shyly said hello. She is a knockout, a beautiful twenty something blonde woman with a ponytail. She was naked except for a towel, but I could see she has an incredible body – big tits, long legs, sexy ass. For a second, I thought I had walked into the wrong apartment. There was nothing skanky about Tonya. She was a fantasy fuck girl from head to toe. She is my porn fantasy in the flesh. I could feel my lust returning with a vengeance.

“Where’s Don?” she asked.

“In the kitchen,” I told her trying to keep my composure.

She smiled and left the room. A few minutes later, she returned with Don. They were both smiling at me. I had undressed down to my boxers.

“Well, why don’t we get down to it?” said Don, who quickly took off his shorts and moved on to the middle of the bed.

“Come over and suck me some more baby,” he beckoned to his wife.

Tonya removed her towel and obliged her husband’s request. They were oblivious to me except for Tonya sticking her ass and shaved pussy way up in the air, which I took as an invitation to join right in.

“Come on get in here,” Don said to me. “Look at that hot pussy.”

So I walked over to where Tonya was and started licking her pussy and fingering her. She tasted sweet like strawberries and I instantly got hard. She has a great ass or what I liked to call a heart shaped ass. I wanted to fuck her so bad, maybe too much. I got too anxious and tried to fuck her wet pussy without a rubber.

She pulled away for a second and Don said, “Hey man, you got to put on a rubber.”

I was embarrassed and realized I had almost broken a swinger’s etiquette rule to always have safe sex, unless asked otherwise. I did what I told my friend Ned never to do. I tried to enter barebacked without permission.

They didn’t seem too mad, though, and Tonya even smiled at me again and I was relieved I hadn’t blown my fantasy opportunity.

However, by the time I got a rubber out of my pants, which I thrown on the floor at the other side of the room, and strapped it on, I wasn’t completely hard anymore. I tried unsuccessfully to fuck her several times, but it was no use. I was flogging a dead dick again. She didn’t seem to notice and continued to suck on Don. I finger fucked her and licked on her clit. I don’t know what came over me, but I then stuck my index finger into her asshole. She didn’t react negatively as I expected, but instead groaned with pleasure.

Don and I then switched positions as he got up from the bed and began fucking his wife from behind. I lay back on the bed and Tonya, who was moaning with pleasure, looked up at me and took my flaccid cock in her mouth. She is a cocksucking pro. There is no doubt about it. I believe her lips should have been licensed. The moment she took me in her mouth, I felt my lusty desire return.

When I was hard enough, she deep throated me and I gasped with pleasure. It was an incredible feeling to have this blonde vision of beauty taking me like a porn star would. But I was prepared this time. I had another rubber in my right hand, the package open and ready for quick application.

Short can be good too…

We welcome guest blogger Jennifer Wylie to our pages today!

Short can be good too…

Sorry, I couldn’t resist that title.

Many people write short stories, many people read them. Probably just as many don’t. I didn’t pay much attention to the comments of those who don’t until I wrote one and it became published. Now I scratch my head a lot.

Yes, I do understand a short is NOT a novel. They each have different benefits. However a short story most certainly has its uses. First of all, they are often cheaper (or free). They are a great way to test out if you like the way an author writes. They are wonderful for filling in little gaps in larger series or works, or showing something from the view of another character or even a minor character’s back story.

My favorite reason is that they are short. I don’t always have time to hunker down and real a full length novel. However, I want to read something, and be able to finish it as well. Ever start a book, get busy, set it aside and when you do make it back you don’t remember all that you read? Ya, like that. They are of course, perfect for short car/bus rides, waiting room reading and for those times you’ll be more than a minute in the bathroom.

One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard about short stories lately is that they want more! Definitely true with a short story… however shouldn’t this also be true with a novel? If the story is written well you always want more, you never want it to end.

My short story Jump I wrote in just a couple of days. The idea came after I’d been talking to my parents on the phone, and gotten a few lectures. :) Though, “If someone asked you to jump off a bridge would you?” wasn’t one of them, for some reason that phrase popped into my  head and the story was born. I was in a rather silly, sarcastic mood at the time, which lent to the humorous aspects of the story.

Jump by Jen Wylie

Debut Short Story

Description:

If you were told to jump off of a bridge would you?

Perhaps it would depend on who was doing the asking. Our heroine has spunk and a sense of humor, however suffers from an extreme case of inappropriate clothing. When things take a turn from dangerous to worse what will she do when fantasy becomes reality? Warning: May include hot leather-clad men, singing and demons.

About the author:

Jennifer Wylie was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. In a cosmic twist of fate she dislikes the snow and cold.

Before settling down to raise a family, she attained a BA from Queens University and worked in retail and sales.

Thanks to her mother she acquired a love of books at an early age and began writing in public school. She constantly has stories floating around in her head, and finds it amazing most people don’t. Jennifer writes various forms of fantasy, both novels and short stories. Sweet Light is her debut novel to be published in 2011.

Jennifer resides in rural Ontario, Canada with her husband, two boys, Australian shepherd, a flock of birds and a disagreeable amount of wildlife.

The Invisible Man: Tales of a Kinky Voyeur

Today we welcome guest blogger Dylynn DeSaint, author of Lesbian Erotica and fellow member of The Sapphic Planet  author group!

Did that title grab your attention? Did it make you want to read a little more?  When it comes to reading or writing a story, how important is the title? Does it matter?  I thought I’d briefly touch upon the subject.

Using a title from a classic, The Invisible Man, I kinked it up a touch by adding Tales of a Kinky Voyeur, just to catch your eye and draw you into this blog posting.  I haven’t actually written that story although it sounds like it would be fun.
As a writer of lesbian erotica, it’s my job to write a story that will engage your mind and body by creating mental images for your imagination to feast upon.  By coming up with an interesting title, or “hook” for a story, it’s my way of beckoning you to “come hither” just as a lover would with the first audible whisper or glance in your direction.  I’m trying to get you involved in my slick web of fantasy.  Each word that your eyes and mind consume, I write to purposely pull you in just a little bit more until you lose yourself in the story.  I want to enthrall you, humor you, entice you, and make you wet.  The title is a teaser.  The rest is foreplay and the big “O” in an erotic story.

The very first story that I got published had the lamest title ever.  It was a nonfiction piece and I had no idea what to call it, so I chose, “The Best Serial Date Ever.”  Yawn.  It’s a cute story about how I met my partner but you’d never know it by the lame title.  Flash forward a few years and you’ll see I’ve gotten a little better at coming up with better ones, some of which you can read for free on my blog at www.dylynndesaint.blogspot or find in anthologies:

Paperwork,   An Erotic romance about a lesbian woman who uses a little S&M to get her workaholic girlfriend’s mind off of business
Silent Fuck,  A 100 word flash fiction story about well…I think the title says it all.
Invisible, A flash fiction story about internet cybersex.
Waiting– An erotic short story about two librarians who only see each other at a library conferences.  Both  enjoy a little exhibitionism mixed in with their S&M.
The Perfect Girl-A lesbian erotic romance about butch delivery truck driver who delivers a package at the home of a physically challenged woman and unexpectedly finds the girl of her dreams.
Her Soft VoiceAn erotic short story about phone sex.

If I were to do write my own twisted version of any of the classics and re-title them, these would be my favorites:
1.  Alice in Wonderland – Alice in Butchland
2.  War and Peace   – War and Piece:  A femme’s dating guide
3.  The Count of Monte CristoThe Cunt of Monte Cristo
4.  Oliver TwistOliver Twisted
5.  Moby Dick – I don’t think we need to change this title at all!
6.  Gone With the WindGone with the Femme
7.  A Tale of Two CitiesA Tale of Two Butches
8.  Dorian Gray – Dorian Gay
9.  Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde  – Ms. Jekyll and Syr Hyde

The Alice in Butchland title actually inspired me to write a humorous erotic story about a high maintenance femme woman who has a nightmarish journey into the world of no makeup and heels. I’ll post an excerpt on my blog soon.
Adriana, thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to write for your readers!

Before I go, here’s an excerpt of my newest story, Haircut, about a butch top who packs a “stiffy” in her jeans, visits her favorite sexy hairdresser, and walks out with more than a trim.  This story will be published in the Sapphic Planet anthology due out in July 2011.

Excerpt:

Adriana stood speechless and immobile. She was familiar with the ensuing butch femme power game. Still, her legs were weak and the heat between them burned impatiently into a rising crescendo of flames that were licking at her sex and growing even hotter the longer she was made to wait. As much as she wanted to, she didn’t dare move an inch. Instead, she quietly and joyfully accepted her submissive role in their sexual romp.
Locking eyes with Adriana, Sy eased slowly back into the chair, slouching back and making herself comfortable with her legs wide apart.

“I want you to unfasten my belt, unbutton the fly on my jeans and take my cock out. Do it very slowly, there’s no rush.”

Adriana approached, her lips forming a pouty, seductive smile, knowing full well that she too, had the power and capacity to drive this cocky butch over the edge. She chose instead, to do exactly as she was told; her dainty fingers slowly unfastened the leather belt, letting it fall to the sides. Wetting her lips with her tongue, she looked up quietly at Sy for delicious approval. Sy returned the gaze but showed no emotion or the sign of approval that Adriana sought.

Before reaching inside, Adriana looked up at Sy once again, her eyes begged for permission to release the object of her desire. Sy took her hand, and instead, guided her fingers over the outline of the cock still hidden in her jeans. It was cruel of her to tease Adriana like this but she knew in the end it would be worth it. Eyes dark with desire and lips parted in anticipation, Adriana moved her fingers sensuously over it back and forth, rubbing it while Sy watched her intently.

“Pull it out now, Adriana” she ordered.

“Show me how much you adore my cock, baby” She stroked Adriana’s hair and face, gently guiding her by the chin to her lap.

How do you define your shifter world?

Today we welcome guest blogger Jessica Lee!

Paranormal romance is one of the most popular genres in the business with new authors on the horizon almost daily. But as they say, “competition is good for business,” right? Yes, I believe that’s true. Competition in publishing inspires the imagination to work even harder to bring the readers something different.

I recently attended the Authors After Dark convention in New Jersey this year where I sat on a panel called “Cats Vs. Dogs.” It was a lively discussion and debate between readers and authors of cat and wolf shifters. What a privilege to have had the opportunity to join some of the most popular names in the paranormal romance industry: Eliza Gayle, Samantha Sommersby, Jacquelyn Frank, and Bianca D’Arc. Part of the dialogue had been based on this very topic: “how is your book different from other shifter books?”

In Bloodlines, I refer to my characters as “shifters” not “werewolves.” I don’t know about you, but for me the term, werewolf, brings to mind this image of a monster—not something sexy. Second, my shifter, Evin KinKaid and his pack family possess the ability to change at will. They’re not controlled by the full moon. Allowing my character to have control of when and where he could shift gave me a little freedom when creating the story. There’s so much more versatility, and their powers can work for you when you need them to.

Another question that came up was how and when did your character first change/shift into a wolf? Where they born able to shift, or did they have to wait until a certain point in life?

When creating Evin, I saw their world as one where at puberty they gained the ability to shift. Unfortunately, I can’t go into the details any deeper without giving away a spoiler. Let’s just say there are extenuating circumstances or events that could make that first shift a not so pleasant experience. *wink*

One unique twist that I enjoyed adding into Bloodlines was giving one of the characters an additional power outside their shifting ability. Who have been some of your more memorable characters in paranormal romance, and what made them so different?

Bloodlines Excerpt:

Evin had been cocky as hell in front of Mason. But the truth was, he was anxious as shit.

A year had passed since his father had banished him from the pack and he’d moved to Dover. Twelve months of jacking off alone in his bed. And the loneliness was driving him out of his mind. But no one in town had even piqued his interest, and a string of anonymous one-night stands wasn’t Evin’s thing. They had a nasty tendency of making an empty bed feel even colder.

There was something different about Mason, though. The human definitely piqued his interest. From the moment Mason had walked into his bay, Evin had been coiled so tight and his dick so hard, he was surprised he’d been able to form a coherent sentence. The spicy scent of Mason’s skin made his blood hot. The way those damn linen pants hugged Mason’s ass when he moved had Evin’s cock aching for release. Shit. No other guy had ever got under his skin so quick before. But it had been all Evin could do to keep a handle on his control and not grab the man by the back of his head, spin him around, and fuck him until Mason knew who he belonged to. Whoa. Where the hell had that come from? He shook his head.

Evin turned left on Highway 211, heading out of town and toward his cottage. After rounding a curb, he pulled onto the shoulder and set the brake.

“Why are we stopping?”

“If I turn around now, there’s a hotel about two miles in the other direction.” Evin pivoted in his seat and faced Mason. Even though the moon served as the car’s only source of illumination, Evin’s perfect night vision allowed him to drink in the rich hue of Mason’s dark eyes. A striking contrast to the short layers of golden blond hair that shimmered under the beams of moonlight. Evin tightened his hand around the leather-covered steering wheel. He had to, or in the next second, his fingers would be wrapped in those locks, and he’d be finding out if they were as soft as they looked. But he knew one touch would never be enough to satisfy the craving about to drive him out of his mind.

“Is that what you want, Evin? Would you rather I choose the other end of the road tonight?”

Yes. Because I’ve got a bad feeling you’re going to be a taste I’ll never get enough of.

No. Because I think I’ll go crazy if I don’t touch you.

“I think it’s pretty clear what I want.” Evin reached out and trailed a forefinger along Mason’s cheek. The coarse sensation of Mason’s shadow of a beard shot through Evin’s skin like a bolt of lust aimed straight for his cock, forcing him to bite back a hiss of pleasure. Mason turned into his touch, then took Evin’s finger knuckle-deep inside his mouth.

And sucked.

Evin couldn’t hold back the groan that emanated from his throat. “Tell me what you want, Mason. Say it.” With a final swipe of his tongue over the tip, Mason released his finger with a pop.

“I want you to fuck me.”
