Top Six Ways to Combat Writing Procrastination

I recently wrote a blog post on The Top Six Ways to Procrastinate as a Writer. As you can imagine, it referenced a lot of internet related items like Facebook and Twitter. I thought it might only be fair to balance this with some ideas to get busy and productive.

1. Disconnect Your Router. Seriously, I have done this on more than one occasion. Turning off the connection at the computer is not enough. You must unplug the router from the wall and count on the fact that the internet and all your email will still be there when you plug it back in later. This will make it tougher to quickly jump on Twitter to type that one tweet. Doing this leads you down a slippery slope. It’s a few keystrokes from typing a tweet to checking everyone’s status on Facebook, reading your email and browsing the news for the latest publishing sensation. Avoid the temptation all together. Mark anything you need to “research” for later.

2. Turn off the Phones. This includes the cell and the landline. You can ignore the ringing but the damage is already done. The sound of the phone alone and the fact that someone is trying to reach me has already broken my train of thought. Don’t worry. Let people leave a message. Imagine that all the missed calls are telemarketers. It will make things easier. If anyone complains about being unable to reach you later, tell them your phone ran out of charge. This even works for landlines if you have cordless phones like I do.

3. Music. I have a playlist that I listen to when I write of nice, non-intrusive songs. I play it only when I write and over time I think it has trained my mind to be in a writing mood when the music comes on. In order to make this work, it is important you don’t play it during non-writing times. The music should be something that engages the mind on a low level without making you want to follow it too closely. Therefore, the selections should contain no words. Save P!nk and Adele for another time. I recommend some nice Windham Hill stuff like George Winston or Liz Story – contemporary and pleasing.

4. Skip the Household Chores. It is so very tempting to throw in a quick load of laundry or empty the dishwasher. It seems so very innocuous and productive. But is it really? Truly, this stuff does need to get done but so does the writing. More writing will get done with some non-interrupted blocks. Make a block for writing and a block for household maintenance. Try (hard) to stick to it.

5. Writing Buddy and/or Timers. These are items to try to keep you honest. Some people like to do 1H1K and I see people teaming up on Twitter for this. Sometimes I set the timer on the iPad and say I am writing for X number of minutes and I don’t get up until the timer goes off. If the timer doesn’t work for you, you need a real person – someone who will ask you if you were butt in chair for the agreed upon time. Just the thought of having to say “No, I decided to take out the garbage and make a peanut butter sandwich” will usually keep you seated.

6. Inspiration. I have a few things that I like to look at for inspiration that sometimes help keep me on track. It might be some tales of success of other authors. It might be a video. I have a great one of Nora Roberts discussing her writing habits. She’ll make you feel lazy but she’s right when she says you can fix bad writing. You can always edit and revise. You can’t fix a blank page. I have another one I watch sometimes by Art Williams (Just Do It). His speech is not specific to writing, but he talks about success and that you can have NO success if you don’t do the work. It seems basic and obvious, but sometimes I need someone to point it out to me again.  There is a long version and a short version.

I hope I’ve given you a few ideas to use the next time you can’t seem to get down to work. What do you do to keep yourself on track?

Excerpt from Mia’s Cop Craving

He brushed her lips with his. “Mmmm, you’d better point me to a flat surface.”

Her hand fluttered in the direction of the hallway and she gasped as he swept his arm under her knees and picked her up. His legs covered the distance quickly, and it barely seemed a blink before they were in her bedroom.

Lights from the street bathed the room in a slight glow and Rogan laid her on the coverlet. He smoothed her hair back from her face and climbed onto the mattress beside her.

“Mia,” he whispered, “tell me what happens in your fantasy.”

The Birth of a Novelist

Ashlynne Laynne is our guest today – poet, songwriter, and now novelist, with her first release: The Progeny. You’ll love the story of how this magical book came to be!

I was eight years old when I placed third in an Optimist Oratorical Contest on Freedom in America. I accepted my shiny gold pin, read my award winning speech and marveled at how everyone hung on my every word. It was the first time I realized the power of my words.

A writer was born.

My rebellious teenage years were spent writing poetry as a sort of therapy. I dabbled in the occasional Danielle Steel novel, never realizing that I wasn’t exactly the target audience for that particular genre. This early exposure to such salacious material was the marked beginning of my love of romance novels.

I fell in and out of love, had a kid and went through many emotional changes in my twenties. The one constant was always my love of poetry and the written word. And although I lost my faith in true love, that didn’t stop me from writing about it. Some of my best love poetry actually occurred when my heart was at its most broken and fragile.

The promise and possibility of finding that one person that completes your heart spurred a fire, in me, to write about what I was almost certain didn’t exist. I took my love of writing a step further and appeared in several anthologies and poetic compilations. I loved that so much that I took to publishing a book of my original work under another pen name. While stretching my creative muscles, I ventured into songwriting. It was much like poetry set to music. Minding the rhythm and meter of music, and writing words to fit, presented an awesome challenge.

With the benefit of hindsight, I attribute my songwriting to grooming me for the task of taking an idea and characters and immersing them in a world that takes a shape of its own. Writers use their words, the varying of sentence structure and pacing to illicit emotions from readers.

So what—you might ask—possessed a poet/songwriter to consider writing a novel?

Several factors…

The Progeny wasn’t the first novel I ever wrote, even though it is my first release. My first novel had a good concept and characters but it was lacking in technique. I wrote two books of the series before I abandoned it for something else.

I’ve always loved vampires, witches and the horror genre. My next endeavor would encompass my two horror loves. With Stephen King as my favorite author, this shouldn’t be a shock.

Fast forward six years from my songwriting. Now I’m in a better place. I’ve somehow pinned the elusive cupid down and convinced him to give me another shot at corralling love. He obliged and sent me my hubby, Mark. Now I’ve got the love thing down and honestly believe that it exists.

What’s next?

October, 6 2010 started like any other day. I woke up, went to work and came home. I was tired so I took a nap that day. This is where it gets interesting. I dreamed about a gorgeous guy. He had dark hair, the weirdest blue eyes and a strange necklace around his neck. When I woke up, I immediately began sketching that necklace. I’m no artist but I had to admit that what I came up with was interesting.

The pieces of my story line slowly gelled. I researched witches, witchcraft and the Salem witch trials the next day. When I slept the next night, I dreamed about him again but this time I dreamed his name—Ascher. Now that my guy had a name, he needed a love. I’ve always loved the name Shawnette. So I shortened it and made it Shauna.

October 8, 2010 was the day that literally changed my life. Surrounded by a stack of witch research, the vision of Ascher, Shauna’s name and sketches of a unique amulet, I decided to write a home for these two characters. I never considered myself patient enough to write a novel but the characters wouldn’t leave me alone.

I dreamed about them, thought about them and imagined different scenarios for them until my idea was 115,000 words. Shauna did the most changing during the process because I didn’t dream her in the beginning. Her physical appearance and origins evolved until she was exactly who Ascher needed.

I was ecstatic when I finally dreamed them together because I knew that it was finally right.

I fell in love with their story and felt their pain. I laughed when they laughed and cried when Shauna cried. They became my babies. My husband and I often joke that we talk about them so much that they should occupy rooms in our home. Almost a year—to the date—that I started writing these characters, J.E. Taylor at Novel Concept Publishing accepted my manuscript and confirmed what I already knew. Like love, the right publisher is out there that will believe in your work and push you to be better.

There was something there in the pages of that Word document. She now believed as much as I did.

That was only the start of my journey. The first manuscript that she saw and what the reader actually reads is very different. I eventually added three chapters to my manuscript to explain Ascher’s existence and to deepen Ursula’s character.

In the end, I think The Progeny offers the reader a different view of vampires. Though I love vampires, I’ve been disappointed at how common their portrayals have become. I think it’s time the world experiences a new breed of vampire.

In closing, and in lieu of an excerpt, I’d like to leave you with my original poem from The Progeny. Books one and two both feature my poetry as the epilogue. I wrote this poem back in 2007—before I ever thought about writing a novel. My bestie tells me that this poem’s existence is proof that The Progeny was my destiny.

I tend to agree.

Blessed Eternity

Envelop me in the sweet darkness of your burning light
Spin me into a web of your eternal delight
Make me yours for all to see
Cover me in kisses sweet with sinful pleasure
Transform me so that I may be yours forever
Make me yours for all to see
I am not longed for the duties of this world
Nor do I wish to be just an ordinary girl
Make me yours for all to see
One day with you is worth a thousand forevers
If this is the only way for us to be together
My soul is a mere formality
Meet me when the shadows replace the light
In the sweet darkness of the eternal night
Give me blessed eternity

The Progeny Blurb

“No fate other than the one I choose.” The timeless creed, and tattoo, bore by the Rousseau’s— a vampire clan with the purest bloodline of any vampire family. Out of this clandestine group came one who was different, yet the same: Ascher – a half-bloodling— half- human, half vampire.

Ascher questions the purpose for his existence and which world he truly belongs to: the human world or the vampire world. Two months from sealing to Ursula— a prearranged union to a woman he abhors — he’s at his wit’s end. He knows if he calls off the sealing, the Romanian clan will strike with deadly force, but he cannot see eternity with a cold empty shell of a woman like Ursula.

Just when he thought life was complicated enough, he meets Shauna— a beautiful, bi-racial human Wiccan — and immediately develops an unshakable attraction to her. She makes him feel alive and vital despite his origins and Ascher makes a decision that turns his immortal world upside down.

About Ashlynne:

Ashlynne Laynne has always had a soft spot in her heart for vampires but grew tired of the garlic fearing, sun loathing creatures of old. An avid horror movie fan, she tends to enjoy media and music that is of a younger, more eclectic nature. This was the catalyst for her writing The Progeny. The vampire/witch pairing is unique and different when most books pair vampires with werewolves.

The infinite possibilities, for such a wickedly unique couple, intrigued her. There is no shortage of romance, steam and surprises in The Progeny. These books are for adults and contain adult sensuality and themes, but minimal profanity. She loves writing on the edge and teetering between the erotica and romance genres. She thinks of Ascher and Shauna as the damned version of Romeo and Juliet.

She’s currently working on book two of the series entitled Blood Bonds. In her spare time, Ashlynne enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her family. Ashlynne juggles the hats of wife, mother, full time employee and part-time writer, hoping to write full time one day soon.

Ashlynne lives in North Carolina with her husband and teenage son.

Welcome Guest ~ Kristabel Reed

Today we’re excited to welcome to our pages Kristabel Reed ~ author of steamy historical romance. Check out her excerpt and leave a comment to enter for a free copy of her latest release!

1.   Why don’t you start by telling us about yourself (Where are you from? What do you write/do in the publishing world? What do you do when you’re not writing — your “day” job, hobbies, obsessions, etc.?) I live on the East Coast and love to explore the steamier side of historical romance. There are so many sexy situations that didn’t just pop up in the 21st century and my goal is to burst the myth of the prim and proper debutante.

2.  Tell us one thing about yourself people would be surprised to learn.  Kristabel Reed is a pseudonym. I do this to protect both the innocent and the guilty!

3. Tell us about your writing: How long have you been writing? What genre(s) do you write in? What have you written (short stories, novels, etc.)? What works are currently for sale? Where?  I write extremely erotic historic romance, mainly in the Regency era, but plan to branch out into the Victorian era by the end of the year. May 8 of this year I plan to publish my first mainstream historical. Granted, it’s a dystopian Regency romance, but it’s more mainstream than, say, the Regency Ménage Tales! That’ll be under K. Reed.

My Regency Ménage Tales include: Seduction of a Proper Lady, Risqué, and Covet.

I also have a new short story series called The Hellfire Club Erotique that takes place during the height of the French Revolution. The Masque is out now, and I plan to post a free story, The Escape within the next couple weeks.

4. What made you chose to write your genre in particular? Is there any other genre you’d like to write? And if so, why? As far as I could tell, no one wrote a Regency ménage a trois. So I did. I have a longstanding and deeply abiding love for historicals. As for other genres, it’s not a genre per se but I’m starting to branch out to mainstreams, but I plan to stay with my beloved historicals. Even with that, I still have a penchant for the hot historical!

5. What do you like most about writing? Least? Most: Writing those 2 most important words: THE END! Actually it’s the concept. I love coming up with story ideas, with themes to explore, and exploring the psyches of my characters. Least: Lack of time. Deadline pressure wouldn’t be back if I had a wee bit more time. Like say an extra week within the week.

6.   Are you a plotter or a pantser?  PLOTTER! Without a very detailed plot, it takes 5 times as long to finish the story. Plus I can’t tell ahead of time if I’m writing myself into a corner. So I have a thorough plot, a detailed outline, and sure, it might change within the process, but I at least have a structure to see me through.

7. Any advice for those who want to write?  Write the story! Sit in that chair and just do it! Seriously, though, learn the craft. This isn’t an easy profession, there’s a lot of rejection and a lot of difficulties along the way, but if it’s what you want, follow that dream without looking back.

8. What’s the most useful book on writing you’ve ever read? The First Five Pages: A Writer’s Guide To Staying Out of the Rejection Pile by Noah Lukeman. Not only is it a very good indicator of what publishers/agents are looking for, but it’s a good guide for the beginning writer. The book points out common mistakes that aren’t necessarily intuitive, ones that you’d be able to see and correct on your own.

9. What’s the sexiest feature on a man to you? And on a woman? Why? On a man: The sexiest feature (other than eyes, because let me tell you a good pair of eyes can make you weak in the knees!) But his voice. A man can often seduce me by his tone. The way he speaks to you, what he has to say. It’s more than a voice that can read a phone book, but a man who can seduce me with his thoughts and ideas. On a woman: Confidence. Sassiness, her boldness. Not attitude, though that’s important, however a woman who treats others like dirt isn’t confident but rude. On the other hand, a woman of any size or shape, from 4 to 24, can be sexy if she knows how to use her attributes correctly.

10. Is there a way for fans and others to contact you? (email, social networking links, etc.) You can find me pretty much everywhere. I’m usually on Twitter-@kristabelreed or on my blog, kristabelreed.blogspot.com and I’m always available on email:  [email protected]

11. Tell us about your latest release – we’d love an excerpt, too! Covet: A Regency Ménage Tale

Charlotte loved two men and has long believed she couldn’t have either of them, let along both. But when they return from war, she seizes her chance.

I’ll be giving away a free PDF copy to one random commenter of Covet, just tell me what you like about historical—or don’t for that matter!

Blurb:

The truest torment is wanting something you know you can never have. Charlotte Tremaine knew this feeling all too well. She covets the freedom to do as she pleases, but has never let herself dream of being with the man she loves. The problem is, she loves two men.

For the last three years, Charlotte has survived her stifling home life by living through correspondence with two childhood friends now off at war. Once they return, will she be able to summon the courage to tell them of her feelings? Or will she let the convenience of mourning an aunt she despised keep her hidden and isolated?

Fear lurks in the shadows and threatens to keep her cloistered. When William Stanton and Grayson, Earl Warrington return from war, she teeters on the brink of having what’s she has always wanted. Torn between William and Grayson, Charlotte must first learn to trust herself before she can trust her heart and body to them.

Excerpt:

Squaring her shoulders, she returned to the stairs and refused to break down until she’d left Fox Hollow. In the foyer, Grayson stood, talking to the butler, Potter. There was no way to avoid him, but she had no desire to speak with him again. In fact, Charlotte thought as she slowly made her way down the stairs, she’d rather not speak to anyone.

Maybe a long walk to clear her head.

Before she could think of a way to escape the foyer without speaking to Grayson, an impossibility she acknowledged, he turned to her.

“A very short visit, was it not, Miss Tremaine?” he asked with that same levelness as before.

“Your grandmother is asleep,” she said, stumbling over the words. “I never managed to visit with her. But I hope to visit another day and find her awake and well.”

Charlotte nodded to Potter, who bowed and went to fetch her cloak and gloves. Watching the servant for a moment, she slowly turned back to Grayson and smiled with genuine happiness. “I’m happy for your safe return, Lord Warrington,” she told him sincerely.

Without waiting for a response, Charlotte turned to leave. She had no desire to experience another cold dismissal or see those blue eyes watching not her but something far more interesting behind her.

She accepted the items from the butler and only then realized her incredible gaffe. With regret it was even necessary, and a sadness that she could never feign, Charlotte slowly turned back around to face Grayson. How could she have neglected to offer even a passing condolence?

It may have been almost nine months since Robert’s death, but she should still have said something to Grayson. In this case, Charlotte didn’t think the letters they exchanged, or the heartfelt sorrow she expressed, were enough. No wonder he held himself distant.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, calling herself all kinds of a fool. “I wish to offer my most sincere condolences on the passing of your brother.”

Emotion flashed in his eyes, making the light blue turbulent. It was the most emotion she’d seen from him since arriving. Grayson gave a short nod. “Thank you, Miss Tremaine,” he said quietly.

Angry his continued formality, Charlotte narrowed her eyes at him. They’d exchanged numerous letters since Robert’s passing and had talked of his untimely death. In fact, Charlotte now remembered and took an angry step forward. She’d begun addressing her letters to Grayson as Grayson, Earl of Warrington. He’d laughed at it, though she could detect a hint of sadness in his replies.

Thank you?

No hint of Grayson showed through in that simple reply. No bit of the man she remembered seemed to remain at all. She’d last seen him when he’d come back to Fox Hollow on leave almost two years ago, and even then, though changed, hadn’t acted this cold, this aloof.

“I do hope you return soon to visit,” he paused and she wondered what he’d wanted to say. “Visit with my grandmother. I know she enjoys your time together.”

“I’m always happy to visit Lady Warrington,” Charlotte said, somewhat defensively.

She was about to add more, when Grayson’s solicitor interrupted. He bowed deferentially to her but spoke directly to Grayson. “Pardon me, my lord, but we still have matters to attend to.”

Charlotte nodded at them and left. She didn’t look back at Grayson, didn’t look up at the house, didn’t look left or right. She walked as briskly as she could back across the field toward her own Willow Hall without outright running.

Clutching her cloak against the brisk winter wind, she felt the bracelet dig into her wrist. That bracelet, her gift from Grayson and William, had been her comfort throughout the long years of Lavinia’s spitefulness. Charlotte stopped and slowly peeled back her layers to look at the silver band.

Her comfort. The simple band of silver had grounded her in ways she hadn’t fully appreciated, but now it was naught more than a pretty silver bracelet, no longer of comfort.

In the middle of the frozen field, she broke down.

Liia Ann White ~ New Release!

Congratulations to Liia Ann White on her recent release, Hot Aussie Weekend. Here’s a blurb, hot excerpt and buy links ~ enjoy!

Blurb

Newlyweds Jaycee and Campbell are stressed. Constantly working, trying to set up a secure future for themselves, they rarely spend time alone, enjoying each other’s company.

So, to celebrate their first anniversary, Campbell whisks away his wife on a romantic getaway where he plans to pamper her and lure her into the ultimate relaxed state. But what is his ulterior motive? What secret has he been keeping from his new wife?

Whatever it is, it’s guaranteed to be a weekend full of eroticism, love, romance and some surprises on a Hot Aussie Weekend.

Excerpt

Starting at her shoulders, Campbell worked his magic fingers down her body, massaging her tight, tense muscles until she felt like she would melt into mattress. He finished massaging her toes and ran his hands slowly up her legs.

Jaycee was unable to stop the moan that escaped her throat as she focussed on the movements he made. His fingers left behind a heated trail that aroused her again. Passed her knees, they made an intricate trail around her thighs and skipped to her hips and ass before moving up her back. Kneading the muscles on her shoulders once more, Campbell leaned down, his breath hot on her skin as he spoke.

“Roll over, beautiful,” he whispered into her ear.

With a small moan, she obeyed, her relaxed muscles protesting when she moved. Her eyes opened to find his deep blue ones gazing at her with adoration. Jaycee’s heart skipped a beat when she saw the love and lust he projected. Reaching up, she cradled his face in her hands and kissed him.

Their lips moved in leisurely movements, exploring each other’s mouths as Campbell’s hand roamed across her breast, cupping it before he rolled the nipple between his fingers. Jaycee’s mouth opened on a moan and Campbell took the opportunity to slip his tongue passed her lips.

Deepening the kiss, she tangled her fingers in his hair and pulled him closer. Arousal tore through her body like a wildfire, awakening muscles that moments earlier had been languid and relaxed. Campbell’s hand moved to her neglected breast and teased her nipple. Letting out a small moan, Jaycee brought her leg up, only for it to be pushed down and have Campbell break contact with her completely.

“You’re not finished with your massage yet.”

He grinned at her frustrated groan and moved off the bed to grab the massage oil again.

“You enjoying torturing me don’t you?” she whined when he returned and ran his oiled hands up her torso, settling them on her breasts.

“Yep,” he quipped. “Hands behind your head please. I know how impatient you are and I don’t want to trying to pleasure yourself before I’m ready to do it.”

Welcome Guest ~ Aubrie Dionne

Today we welcome Aubrie Dionne, Sci Fi and Fantasy author. Take it away, Aubrie!

Why don’t you start by telling us about yourself? I’ve lived my whole life in NH. I’m a professional flutist by day, and a writer by night! I love to imagine stories to go along with the music, and my flute students told me I needed to start writing them down. So, here I am today!

Tell us about your writing: How long have you been writing? What genre(s) do you write in? I’ve been writing for about six years. I started writing fantasy, and have branched off into science fiction and a little bit of horror (nothing too graphic-but I do love zombies). My biggest break was when I got my agent after my fourth book, and my three book contract with Entangled Publishing. Since then, my writing has really taken off. I just signed a contract for my YA sci fi book with Inkspell Publishing, and I’m really excited to start publishing more YA.

What made you chose to write your genre in particular? Is there any other genre you’d like to write? And if so, why? I grew up watching the old Star Wars movies over and over again. I could recite any scene from memory. My sister and I used to act them out in the backyard and fight over who got to be Princess Leia! I was also a big fan of Star Trek TNG, and watched every episode for the entire seven year run. I also loved a set of books called: The Secret of the Unicorn Queen. My favorite fantasy movie was The Last Unicorn.

So, it’s not surprising that when I sat down to write, science fiction and fantasy came out!

What do you like most about writing? Least? The most: creating my own worlds, and seeing where my characters go inside them! The worst: The snarky reviewers that tear my work to pieces. Although, my New Year’s resolution was to not let them get to me. Like Taylor Swift says, “People throw rocks at things that shine.”

Any advice for those who want to write? Yes: write a lot. Then, write some more. It took me four books to get an agent. I must have queried 400 agents in that time. I thought I’d write one book and then be famous. But, the reality is a writer’s life never stops. You’re always plotting the next book, and then the next. You have to enjoy the process, because you’ll be doing it for the rest of your life. It’s like practicing an instrument. You never stop playing.

Which is your most popular work in terms of sales? Critical acclaim? Which is your favorite book you’ve written and why? Paradise 21, the first book in the New Dawn series is my bestselling book. I can’t pick a favorite because I love them all so much!

Tell us about your latest release – we’d love an excerpt, too! Tundra 37, the sequel to the New Dawn series is my latest release. Here’s the blurb:

Gemme is a hi-tech matchmaker who pairs the next generation of Lifers aboard the Expedition, a deep space transport vessel destined for Paradise 18. When the identity of her lifemate pops up on her screen, she’s shocked that he’s the achingly gorgeous and highly sought after Lieutenant Miles Brentwood—a man oblivious to her existence. Believing everyone will think she contrived the match, she erases it from the computer’s memory.

Just as comets pummel the ship and destroy the pairing system forever.

With the Expedition disabled, the colonists must crash land on the barren ice world of Tundra 37 where Gemme is reassigned to an exploratory mission, led by Lieutenant Brentwood. Only in the frozen tundra does she understand the shape of his heart and why the computer has entwined their destinies.

EXCERPT

Prologue

The Seers

I’m losing her.

Abysme guides the vessel in silence, her blind eyes rolling as she senses our course, two hundred years away from Paradise 18. She’s scattered her thoughts among the stars, and her mind drifts farther from the sister I once knew. I fear the machine has engulfed her individuality. She’s forgotten the meaning of our goal, the oath we took three centuries ago. Most of all, she’s forgotten me, creating an emptiness inside me more profound than the desolation surrounding us.

If I had my arms, I’d reach out to comfort her and usher her back from the black abyss spread before us. As children, I kept her alive through the destruction, signing us up for the Expedition and winning two tickets off Old Earth before it succumbed to hell. But can I save her now?

I send impulses through my brainwaves and into the ship. Bysme, do you hear me?

Unlike her, I have one operating eye and can see the control chamber we hang from. Twisting my head, I search her features. Her skeletal face twitches. She writhes and the wires holding her in place stretch taut. I wonder what I’ve done to us, the shock of our disembodiment jolting me. Every input hole drilled into my skull snakes with activity. The ship surges through me, a vast intranet of information, names, status charts, and infinite trajectories. If I couldn’t feel the cold, regulated air on the remnants of my torso, I’d be lost in the machine too. I remind myself of our mission and the perseverance flows into my veins.

She doesn’t respond and the fear wells up from within me. Can I guide the ship alone? I realize I’ve left her at the helm for too long while I drifted into memories.

Status of Beta Prime? Bysme speaks in monotone computer speech as she turns to the corner of the main control deck where the orb glistens, tempting us with the mysteries hidden in the cosmic swirls within its core. Sometimes, I wish we’d blasted the ball off the hull after its tendrils attached to the outer frame instead of recovering it for study. We’ve guarded it for so long, Project Beta Prime has become part of us, yet we’re further than ever from unlocking its secrets. All I know is the insistence of my memories, like ghosts that refused to be ignored.

Unchanged. The weight of my voice in our mindspeak reflects my disappointment. Like everything else.

Bysme falls silent, and I scan the systems searching for answers that aren’t there.

Welcome Guest ~ Doris O’Connor

Today we welcome Doris O’Connor, who’s on a blog tour promoting her latest release, Lure of Forever. Comment to enter her drawing ~ three lucky readers who comment on her blog tour posts will win a copy! You can find links to her other tour posts at the end of her blog below. Without further ado, Here’s Doris!

MY NIGGLING HERO

Niggle, niggle, nag, nag, niggle. Not very attractive qualities normally, unless you’re an ancient vampire breathing down your author’s neck, giving her a proverbial kick up the back side to get your story told or even to get it promoted.

I am of course talking about Lucas De Tourneau, ancient vampire, hero of Lure Of Forever, and royal pain in the seat to me. Ever since Lucas first made an appearance in Lure Of The Blood, and a certain shifter got the girl, Lucas has been niggling at me to have his story told.

Now Lucas, being Lucas, is rather particular. He likes things done just so, and heaven help you when you don’t do as you’re told. He is not a patient man, and he has a rather dim view of humans. However he does have a soft spot for curvy brunettes, the sassier the better.

I knew I needed to find him a strong heroine. A woman who would stand up to him and keep him in check, whilst driving him slowly round the bend. A woman who would raise all of his protective instincts and make him remember things he would rather forget.

A woman not at all impressed by his ‘vampire act’. A woman named Coralie Roberts.

When Coralie stumbles on his boat, he doesn’t quite know what to do with her. She is different and his interest is piqued, especially when he can’t compel her. What is he to do with this little bundle of curves?

Only one thing he can do…

***

It was her turn to stop speaking when he grabbed her hand and pulled her flush into his body.  Merde, if her curvy body didn’t rub against all the right places. It had been way too long since he’d indulged himself.  This little human may well regret having landed on his boat in the morning, and he had to find out what she knew. His blood surged south, pooling in his balls at the mere thought of having those soft curves writhing under him. All that banked passion, he sensed, would make for an interesting time under the sheets.

He allowed his fangs to run out a little further, waiting for her reaction, which turned out to be amusing and infuriating in equal measures. She rolled her eyes and pushed against his chest.

He let her go, but not before he noticed the way her breathing and heart accelerated with a satisfied smile. He may not be able to reach her mind, but her body was another matter. The exasperated sound she made deep in her throat shot straight to his cock, and he shifted imperceptibly to get comfortable in his jeans.

She glared at him, shaking her head, and drops of moisture flew in the air. His conscience stirred briefly. As she’d arrived here looking like a drowned rat, he figured she must be getting cold. He stepped closer again, but her raised hand and incredulous expression stopped him.

“You have got to be kidding me. Are those things growing? Seriously? Aren’t you a bit too old to play Dracula?”

The nerve of the little minx. She made him sound like a five-year-old, playing dress up. As she headed for the door, dismissing him as though he was a child, he pounced and spun her around before she could reach for the door handle.

Her eyes widened and her breath hitched. He caged her in against the wall, the rhythm of her heartbeat reminding him that he hadn’t fed in several days. His cock pressed painfully against the seam of his fly, her ineffective struggles in his arms waking up the bloodlust he usually held under iron control. Ahhh, it had been way too long since he had the thrill of the chase. She shivered and stopped struggling when he ran his fangs along her neck and he smiled. He had her now. He pulled back slightly to see her expression. Her face was flushed, her eyes wide and unblinking as she looked up at him.

“Ah, that’s better, Chere. Does this feel as though I’m playing at Dracula? I let you know he has nothing on me. I have been around for…Umph.

His balls exploded as her knee came up and hit the bull’s eye.  He staggered back when she pushed against his chest, in too much pain at that moment to stop her.

“Spare me, big boy. This may work in your little gatherings, but please. Are you that deluded, you actually believe you could hypnotize me? What next? You’re gonna sparkle in the sun? Turn into a bat?” She stamped her foot in frustration at his complete inability to utter a response. “Oh, for goodness sakes. Speak, man. I didn’t hit you that hard.”

“That is a matter of interpretation.” He just about managed to croak his response. He had to resist the urge to cup his aching balls to make sure they were still attached. That woman had bloody hard knees. At least she had the good grace to look a little chagrined, as her chocolate eyes rested briefly on his groin.

A slight flush crept into her cheeks and she didn’t look at him when she mumbled, “Well, yes. I’m sorry if I hurt you, but what do you expect me to do? Stand there and let you maul me with your fake teeth? They’re bloody sharp, you know. If you insist on wearing them, I’d file them down, before you end up hurting someone.”

She worried her bottom lip with her teeth and amusement replaced his annoyance.  Righteous indignation warred with worry in every line of her delectable body. She was a walking enigma, this bundle of curves. The well-buried human part of him stirred in recognition––of what, exactly? He wasn’t sure, and now was not the time to ponder on that. Shifting slightly, relief flooded him as the ache in his balls ceased.

“Are you OK? Don’t need an icepack or something?”

“I’ll live, it seems, but thank you. Shall we start again?” He extended his hand as he spoke.

 ***

I was chuckling to myself when I wrote that scene :) .

Well, ancient vampire or not, a girl has to keep these men under control somehow—especially niggling heroes.

*looks pointedly at Lucas and reminds him that she is planning another book in the series and Coralie may have a few more tricks up her sleeve*

*smiles to herself, as Lucas stops niggling*

I tell you, the things us authors have to put up with…

Book Blurb:

You’d think a three thousand year old vampire would believe in forever. Not Lucas. He has an escaped demon to hunt and no time for the follies of humankind. When strip-o-gram Coralie arrives on his boat, she awakens human instincts long buried, and protecting her becomes of paramount importance.

Coralie, standing in for a friend, is mortally embarrassed at having stumbled onto the wrong boat. The vampire wannabe she encounters makes her body sing in ways she never thought possible. Finding out that he is indeed the real thing throws everything she ever believed in into doubt.

With the demon closing in and the future of humanity in peril will they manage to find their forever?

Author bio:

Glutton for punishment would be a good description for Doris… at least that’s what she hears on an almost daily basis when people find out that she has a brood of nine children, ranging from adult to baby and lives happily in a far too small house, cluttered with children, pets, dust bunnies and one very understanding and supportive husband.  Domestic goddess she is not.

There is always something better to do after all, like working on the latest manuscript and trying not to scare the locals even more than usual by talking out loud to the voices in her head. Her sexy Alpha heroes and sassy heroines tend to be pretty insistent to get their stories told, and you will find Doris burning the midnight oil on a regular basis. Only time to get any peace and quiet and besides, sleep is for wimps. She writes contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance.

German born, Doris now resides in the middle of a busy town in Bedfordshire/England and dreams of a nice big house by the sea, with plenty of space to run kids and dogs and let her imagination soar.

“Ms. Kenrick’s writing style flows nicely throughout the story. Her attention stays more on the characters rather than the setting which is fitting for the genre of the novella. I like her ability to dig deep within the characters feelings allowing them to step up and tell their story. It is as if the author really took the back seat on this one. Very well written indeed! JoAnne Kenrick knows how to write unique, if not quirky, characters that stay with me long after I’ve finished reading their stories.” – Talina, Night Owl Reviews

This Sweet Irish Kiss excerpt has been edited to make it a PG-13. Please keep in mind that

the full story has a 4 flame rating and is therefore NOT suitable for minors.

I can’t believe I did that. What a great first impression. Not! And only I could top it off by going all defensive on his ass. Poor guy looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights. At least he was a gentleman about it, though. Had any of my exes seen me go down like a ton of bricks, all Nia Vilvados style, they’d have pissed themselves laughing and grabbed their cameras. I’m the character who gets caught up in headphone wire when she sees a hot guy in that movie…Fat Greek Wedding, Big Fat Greek…whatever. I know what I mean.

Rachel shuddered. She’d fallen flat on her face because the hunkiness of her one-night stand had taken her by surprise. She hadn’t expected it. Not in the least. Average, that’s what his profile had said. It’s why she picked him. She figured he wouldn’t be up himself. Most attractive men who know they’re hot behave like monkeys in heat because of it. She wanted a man who would be thanking his lucky stars to have her in his arms, and one who would be romantic and polite. And when he rushed to help her, he‘d surprised her again.

Drop dead gorgeous and caring? This could be dangerous.

“Ya feeling better now?” Thick Irish accent, smooth like Baileys, coated each word her one-night stand spoke.

“Uh-huh.” She glanced up at his welcoming expression and caught her stare in his. “So, you’re Irish?” You’re Irish?

He quirked his mouth into a grin as if she amused him. She reminded herself that she wanted this and backed up. She sat on the nearest thing to her, a dining chair from the breakfast for two set, and chewed at her freshly manicured nails. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt this nervous. Her stomach flip- flopped around the butterflies dancing in her gut.

“Ya, that a problem?” God I love his Irish brogue.

“Listen, Shaun, I’m sorry about the way I came down on you. I mean, not came down on you. Hell, I…I’m sorry for losing it.” He raised an eyebrow. “For biting your head off when you tried to help.”

“Hey, I get it. I’m not what ya expected.” Shaun, hands firmly rooted in his pockets, shrugged his shoulders. “Ya definitely not what I expected, either, but here we are. We can call it a day if you prefer or we can enjoy the rest of the evening. What do ya say? I can leave if ya like. The hotel room’s been paid for, so ya can spend the night and make the most of it. I’ll leave ya be, so I will. But I’d rather stay here…with ya.”

Her stare locked on Shaun, and she watched him grab his bag from the foot of the bed and stride toward the exit. His muscular frame, dark features, and great sense of style had her knees knocking together. She couldn’t remember the last time she actually wanted a man. But it wasn’t like she’d chase after him. The day she did that would be the day she forgave her daddy, or rolled over dead. The latter was more likely to happen first.

The following excerpt has been edited to make it a PG-13 excerpt. Please keep in mind that the book does contain adult themes and language, and is not suitable for minors.

Pretentious, that’s how Rachel described the infamous Knightsbridge store where she worked. She loved her job, though. It meant she could let loose, make crazy-ass window displays, and stretch her imagination beyond the high street fashion trends. Usually.

“Effing yuppie fashion.” She stood, pin cushion in hand, staring out the huge plate glass window. The rain drizzled over passing shoppers who huddled and shared umbrellas with loved ones. She wished she could have someone she could trust to protect her when life pissed all over her, but she didn’t have anyone like that. The big brick wall she’d built had seen to it.

A flashback of running through a downpour with her father hit her hard. He’d thrown his coat over her, sheltering her and leaving himself open to the elements. They giggled all the way home, running late for a Mother’s Day dinner.

She closed her eyes to try and block out the past, but the darkness acted as a blank canvas for her memory to play out the scene until a rumble of thunder in the distance brought her back to the present.

She sniffled back her feelings and grasped a plastic body to steady herself. A teardrop trickled down her face, and she smeared it away. Time to buckle up and get over it. Once a fond memory, it now served as a bitter pill. He’d tricked her, tricked everyone with his gallant gestures. He could never again be the genuine, kind man she remembered from her childhood. At least not to her, anyway.

“Effing life.” She threw a knit over a male model’s shoulders and fluffed to give it a casual yet purposeful style. “What are they thinking, asking me to decorate the mannequins with this jumped up crap? Men don’t dress like Prince William. No man I know anyway.”

Her pocket buzzed. Rachel flipped her phone open. “Hello?” Nothing. “Hell-o?”

Still nothing. She pulled it from her ear and glanced at the digital display.

“Email, not a call. I’m never going to get used to this stupid, high tech phone.” She pressed a few buttons. Some wrong. Some right. Eventually, she managed to open up the message.

A last minute check, to make sure your 1NightStand goes as you desire. May I suggest you wear a corset, my dear, to flatter your curves. He’ll be there before you, and I picked a room especially with a double door entrance so you can have a Scarlet O’Hara moment. Please don’t wear green. He hates the color. A bottle of Jameson would make a wonderful gift, should you wish to bring something along to break the ice. And best of all, Rachel, remember why you wanted this and enjoy the experience. Good luck, dear, I hope he’s all you need.

Bien a toi, Evangeline

This excerpt has been edited to make it suitable for a general, mature audience. Sweet Irish Kiss is not suitable for minors.

“Put this blindfold on,” he ordered, “if ya want a surprise.” He wanted to put it on her himself. But knowing she had trust issues, it didn’t feel right to do so. Instead, he went to the bathroom to clean the toys with warm, soapy water as the packet had said for him to do. He hoped she would be sightless and under his demand when he got back.

He wasn’t disappointed. Still on all fours, she had done as requested. He smeared lube over the beads and eased them into her. As an anal newbie, he had no idea how much it would turn him on and drive him insane. He wanted to rip them out and shove his cock inside her tight little hole instead. His hard on throbbed with need already, and it had only been minutes since he’d come. Sure he would be able to perform again, and probably too soon if he didn’t grab hold of himself, he grinned.

When the fifth and biggest bead was inside her, he whipped on a condom, slipped inside her bleep entrance from behind, and plunged all the way into her slick warmth . The bumpity-bump of the latex numbs rubbing against him through her thick layer massaged his length as he moved, and he couldn’t contain the growl that emerged from deep in his gut.

The Cottage in the Woods by Lucy Felthouse

Genre: Lesbian paranormal erotic romance

Blurb:

Living in her remote cottage in the woods, Heidi doesn’t get many visitors. So when she spots a fox in her garden, she’s delighted. However, her joy quickly turns to dismay when she thinks the beautiful creature may be injured. Heading out to see how she can help, Heidi is astounded when something happens that makes her question her eyesight – not to mention her sanity. Once she gets over her shock and discovers the reason behind the peculiar encounter, Heidi is mighty glad that the fox chose her garden to visit.

Excerpt:

A movement in the garden caught Heidi’s attention immediately. She peered out into the dark, her hands still immersed in the washing up bowl as she tried to catch another glimpse of whatever was lurking in the darkness outside her kitchen window. She wasn’t frightened, merely curious. She lived so far out in the wilderness that it could only be an animal, and the last time she’d checked, they couldn’t open locked doors. So she was perfectly safe.

What made her nocturnal visitor so unusual was its proximity to the house. Animals were braver in the city, where they’d become used to humans. But out here, they were still timid and very wary of man. Heidi’s little cottage was practically screaming that it was occupied, with its smoking chimney and blazing lights and yet the creature – whatever it was – was almost outside the window. Heidi frowned. Something definitely wasn’t right.

Another flash of movement, and Heidi finally identified her visitor. The beautiful russet fur, big bushy tail with flecks of white – there was a fox in her garden.

Grinning, Heidi rushed to dry her hands on a tea towel and then moved across the room to flick off the light switch. She waited until her eyes became accustomed to the darkness, then made her way back to the window. She spied the fox immediately, crouched down beside the hedge surrounding her garden, as though it was hunting something. A life-long nature lover, Heidi smiled, truly appreciating the stunning beauty of the creature. But the longer Heidi watched the animal, the more confused she became.

The fox hadn’t moved for some time. If it was hunting, surely it would have pounced by now? A sinking feeling rolled through Heidi’s stomach. Perhaps it wasn’t stalking after all, but lying down because it was injured? She knew that out here, if the fox was hurt, it had been attacked by another predator, rather than had a run-in with a moving vehicle. After all, the only vehicle around these parts was hers, so unless her truck had gone all Christine, it certainly wasn’t that.

No, it had to be another animal. It was survival of the fittest, the food chain and all that. She knew how these things worked, but there was no way she could leave the poor creature suffering in her garden. Not if she could do something about it.

Heidi began to plan exactly what to do. She knew that if the fox was injured and couldn’t move, it could snap at her in self-defence, it having no idea that her intentions were good. She desperately wanted to help the vulnerable creature, but preferably without ending up needing stitches and a tetanus shot.

As Heidi gazed into the darkness, trying to work out a solution, she lost her mind. At least, that’s the conclusion she came to as her eyes relayed an image to her brain which couldn’t possibly be accurate.

Guest ~ D. C. Mcmillen

We’re excited to welcome D. C. McMillen, here to celebrate a very hot new release, The Rusty Nail.

What’s your favorite part of being an erotica writer?

I am a copy writer by trade and it can involve a lot of research on not so interesting topics – hair removal, car insurance, weight loss, etc. At the end of the day, I like to pour myself a glass of red wine, let my id out of its cage and watch my fingers fly across the keyboard. Writing about sex and romance is a fun way to unwind and wind myself up at the same time. ;)

You have a series around a naughty yacht club – have you ever worked in the hospitality trade and made up “adventures” about the clients?

I’ve worked in the hospitality industry, yes, but it has yet to inspire me to write about anything hot and naughty. I am sure this is only because I vividly recall a tomato-red smock and overwhelming stench of cheap luncheon meat every time I think back to my “deli days”.*shudder*

You have a lot of writing resources on your website.  Do you feel that part of being a writer is helping other writers?

Absolutely! I do not feel like I am in competition with other indie authors. Rather, I feel that it is imperative we share our knowledge and resources with each other in an effort to advance the community as a whole while improving upon our own individual abilities and talents.

Can you explain Flash Fiction?

Well, I am not an expert on flash fiction by any definition but I do love the stuff. There is something exciting and challenging about attempting to write an entire story – one with a beginning, middle, and conclusion – in a finite amount of words. I like flash fiction that stays at 200 words or less but, in my mind, I consider any story that is written in 1200 words or less to be flash fiction.

Whenever I find myself at a loss as to how to tighten up a story I am working on, I will abandon it for a while to write a couple of flash fiction pieces. I find this helps me to get in the rhythm and mindset of cleaning and tightening my work.

Do you think it’s harder to write a short story or full length?

I absolutely think it is harder to write full length stories. I have written two novels so far and cannot yet bring myself to submit them to publishers. I keep going back in to write and rewrite different sections of the manuscripts. To be honest, they are driving me crazy! I am a lot more confident in my short stories.

Tell us about your new release!

My most recent release is a novella called The Rusty Nail. Here is a short blurb about the story:

The Rusty Nail is a novella about a diverse group of characters who somehow find themselves acquainted with a dive bar in the wrong area of town. The entire novella takes place in the span of a single day, and I hope you will be entertained (and turned on) as each character discovers the good, the bad, and the ugly about their partners, themselves, and their hidden sexual desires.

This novella contains blatantly erotic, sexy and graphic M/F, M/M, F/F  and even a couple of solo scenes. In other words, this novella is totally hot.

Guest ~ Jean Roberta, Sapphic Planet author

Today we’re excited to talk with another fellow author from the Sapphic Planet anthology, available in print and EBook. Welcome, Jean Roberta!

I’m Jean Roberta, and I teach English in a university on the Canadian prairies. Thanks to the law that made same-sex marriage legal throughout Canada in 2005, my long-term sweetie and I got married on October 30 (Halloween weekend) 2010.  We’re currently going through Renovation Hell, upgrading our vintage house which was built in 1914. We plan to invite more guests to our home when it’s ft for company.

I write in several genres. Over eighty of my erotic stories have appeared in print anthologies such as the annual Best Lesbian Erotica series (2000, ’01, ’04, ’05, ’06, ’07, ’09). A few of my non-erotic (sensual or suggestive) lesbian stories have appeared in such places as Kissed by Venus (www.kissedbyvenus.ca), where I also review books with lesbian content and write a regular column, “Stranger Than Fiction.”

My older publications are listed on my own site, www.JeanRoberta.com. I write monthly reviews for the in-depth review site for erotic literature, Erotica Revealed (www.eroticarevealed.com). I blog every Thursday on the six-writer blog, Oh Get a Grip (www.ohgetagrip.blogspot.com).

A collection of my rants, um, articles on the politics of sex is available as an e-book, Sex Is All Metaphors, from the Coming Together enterprise (www.eroticanthology.com) which publishes erotica to raise funds for good causes. These 25 pieces originally appeared in my column on the site of the Erotic Readers and Writers Association (www.erotica-readers.com) from 2008 to 2010. The title, “Sex Is All Metaphors,” is based on a line in a poem by Dylan Thomas.

My story in the Sapphic Planet anthology is named “Fame.” It’s about the kind of misunderstanding that often occurs in fairly small lesbian communities, where everyone “knows” everyone else, but where gossip and impressions can be misleading.

Is fame in the eyes of the beholder?

“Emerald Green,” locally-famous lesbian writer of Victorian mystery novels and visual artist, lives in the same artsy neighborhood as Jen, university professor and specialist in linguistics. Jen is fascinated by “Emerald,” but she doesn’t want to seem like a stalker. “Emerald” thinks Jen is an intellectual snob until she works up the nerve to speak to her about rising property taxes in the neighborhood.

Jen offers “Emerald” a glass of wine and an explanation. The two women discover that they have much more in common than they knew.

Here is a passage about “Emerald,” told from Jen’s viewpoint:

“Her pen name was Emerald Green, but her real name was Emily Carr. Really.

Emily was short, curvy, and charismatic. If you were in the same room with her, you couldn’t ignore her. It didn’t matter whether her body type, her strong features or her hair color of the week were currently fashionable. Emily didn’t need to follow trends. She was the kind of person who sets them.

I surfed to the website of “Emerald Green” regularly to read the latest news about her Victorian mystery series, and I checked her blog every day to read her thoughts. I bought one of her whimsical pen-and-ink drawings on-line. It was named Submission, and it showed a busty dark-haired woman on all fours, licking the high-heeled boots of a slim blonde who would have looked unnaturally tall even in bare feet. The Mistress was smiling as she peered sideways at her maid’s bare, pink bottom, exposed beneath her little black skirt and the long white sash of her frilly apron, which was tied in a large, poofy bow at her waist. The picture looked like an erotic portrait of Lady Gwendolyn and her maid Mary, the crime-solving team in the mystery novels.

“Emerald Green,” a self-professed submissive, was as much a creation as anything else she produced.”

Little does Jen know that Emily finds her cool, aloof, intellectually intimidating and very sexy. Jen is still feeling unlovable since her live-in girlfriend moved out, but Emily’s admiration seems like a miracle cure.

Most of my lesbian stories could be classified as erotica rather than Happy-Ever-After romances, but lesbian erotic romance is growing in popularity, and it is fun to write.

In “Madame Blanche,” I retell a French fairy tale of the 1600s about a shapeshifting cat and the prince who discovers her secret. In my version, the “prince” is every bit as bold but not as male as he is in the original. This story appears in a collection of lesbian fairy tales, Rumpled Silk Sheetswww.ravenousromance.com/lesbian/rumpled-silk-sheets-lesbian-fairy-tales.com

My story about a singing ghost, “Authentic,” appears in an award-winning anthology, Haunted Hearths and Sapphic Shades: Lesbian Ghost Stories, from Lethe Press (www.lethepressbooks.com).

Watch for my very short story, “Signature,” in a new anthology, Girl Fever: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex for Lesbians: www.cleispress.com/book_page.php?book_id=455.
