EXCERPT

PG 13

Barb lost herself in twisting and turning dance movements. Above all else, she loved dancing. On stage she could think. On stage she could be whoever she wanted to be. She stopped to thrust her hips suggestively—stage right, center, stage left and back to center. She knew there were men and women in the crowd pretending to be making love to her as she gyrated before them. She smiled at a redheaded woman in the near corner fondling her own breasts, mimicking Barb’s moves. She often replayed her favorite lovemaking moments while performing, to intensify the experience for everyone. Intense passion—that’s what she was selling. No more. But no less. The audience deserved the best she could create for them.

Barb pulled the thong away from her body and let it snap against her belly. She gave her patrons a startled look of fright and surprise. How many wanted to leap up and protect her?

She peered over at Ruth and Desiree, who still gawked. Barb wanted to purr when she saw that they’d joined hands as if trying to garner strength to comprehend what they were witnessing.

They’d accepted her invitation to join her for their tenth college reunion. Both had gone through recent divorces. While the three of them exchanged Christmas cards every year, Barb hadn’t spoken with either since they’d cleaned out their living quarters right after graduation. Both women, however, had eagerly accepted her invitation to stay with her for the reunion. The campus was a quick twenty miles away. Staying at her house would give them plenty of time to catch up on what had been happening over the past decade.

Luci, how could you? #MFRWHooks #EroticRomance #LaterInLife

For week three, I’m featuring my first submission and acceptance with Extasy Books, published in 2007. You can read more about the story behind The Diary and the choice to set it in Chicago and the U.K. HERE.

Welcome to MFRW Hooks, where the authors of Marketing for Romance Writers share snippets from their stories to entice you into wanting more. Be sure to click on the links at the end to travel!

EXCERPT

“Luci, how could you?”  Kate Noble slammed her sister’s diary shut.  Kate tried to breathe normally, but how could she do that when she’d just discovered that her baby sister was some kind of nymphomaniac?

Why had she even opened the diary?  Because it was there on her sister’s desk.  She’d resisted opening it for at least half an hour while she busied herself watering plants and freshening the small apartment—a task Luci had dumped on her in a note telling her she’d be out of town for a while.

This wasn’t the first time Luci had up and left virtually overnight.  Usually, she was gone for more than a month or so.  Kate had gradually grown accustomed to Luci’s free spirited ways, so in contrast to her own.  And Luci had always been able to depend on Kate to tidy things up behind her.

Kate grimaced.  She’d probably been a poor substitute for a mother.  She’d accepted that role when Luci’s father and their mother were killed in a car accident shortly after she’d finished her master’s degree at Northwestern.  She’d never hesitated taking in her eleven year old sister.

With sixteen years in age separating them, she should have been better able to establish herself as the adult role model.   She’d tried her best, but she’d come up short way too often during Luci’s tumultuous teen years.  Still, Luci and she had survived and had many fine times.  But she’d failed to ever really contain the girl who now had turned into such a willful young woman.

. . .

Kate slumped down at her sister’s desk.  Should she read more?  She’d simply dipped into the diary like so many folks casually stabbed at a verse in the Bible.  Kate scowled and rested her chin on her knuckles.  An alarm bell began ringing in the corner of her brain.

Professor?  What professor?  Luci was a college junior, an English major.  Would she ever graduate?  She worked nearly full-time at a trendy Near-North boutique and took college classes around her work schedule.

But a professor screwing a student—wasn’t that against some rule?  Weren’t there ethics governing faculty student relations?  At least such behavior must be frowned upon.  How had Luci gotten herself mixed up with a professor?  Who was he?  And what was he trying to get from her sister—other than her body?

Kate reached for the document.  Her fingers curled as if fearful of turning a page.  Was she afraid of what she might learn about her sister, or did she fear for Luci’s safety?  Kate shuddered.  Or was she merely jealous?

Setting: Stratford-Upon-Avon #EroticRomance #steamyromance

A rakish professor, a flaming redhead, her petite younger sister, and the redhead’s bi Italian girlfriend in a blistering transcontinental tale of revenge gone awry.

Chicago, Illinois. London, England. Stratford-Upon-Avon, England. Special places, for both Mr. Kraft and myself.

How do we choose where to place a story, when there’s the entire world to choose from? How much does it matter where a story is set?

Answers: for question two, it matters a lot. Geography, climate, urbanization versus rural, desert cactus and dry heat versus verdant forest and vast lakes, to say nothing of the quirks of local culture. Because these things matter to us, we’ve never set a story in a place where we haven’t either lived or at least spent time.(Not counting time travel and fantasy, that is…)

That still gives us lots of options – something like 25 countries, and most states in the U.S. But we do have some favorites. Chicago is where he and I met, fell in love, and married. I get back there at least once a year to reconnect with friends. I love its vibrance, museums, lakefront, restaurants, theater, and overall ambience. Especially in summer, which is when I visit. There’s a reason Mr. Kraft and I now live in Arizona… though a harsh winter snowstorm played a major role in advancing our relationship, back in the beginning. You can read about that HERE if you’re curious.

And England? Both he and I have been there… but not together! I was fortunate to travel with my college roommate the summer after graduation, and Mr. Kraft has traveled there for conferences and consultation.

ABOUT THE DIARY

Following Colors of the Night, our next publication was another full-length novel, The Diary. This book was our first submission and first acceptance at Extasy Books, where it is still available. It was released in February of 2007.

Chicago was a natural setting for the main action of The Diary; I’m not sure we ever considered any place else. Heroine Kate Noble is an art curator, working at a large private gallery. Her younger sister Lucy – for whom she’s had to take on a maternal role after their parents died – has her own apartment and is an English Major at a downtown college campus, where the hero, Grayson Cosgrove, is a professor. All the accoutrements needed for their first encounters and gradual entanglement are readily available in Chicago and flowed easily into the story.

Part way through the story, however, our main characters take a trip. Why England?. Because Shakespeare’s A Comedy of Errors was, loosely speaking, an inspiration for a twist in our plot, and it seemed poetic justice to place that scene – where else – on the Bard’s home turf, Stratford Upon Avon.

Researching the background for that scene gave us both a lot of pleasure, triggering memories and expanding our awareness of details—the carillons playing, the quiet walk along the river, the half-timbered houses and buildings. The secluded cottage where Kate and Grayson stay is a real place, with an inviting on-line brochure. The menu for their dinner at Marlowe’s was likewise readily accessible.

EXCERPT

Set Up: Grayson’s point of view, following an angry exchange the previous day they haven’t talked about yet.

Kate’s eyes sparkled as she took in their exquisite surroundings, causing Grayson to chuckle. Marlowe’s had been built in 1595. Although it had been renovated many times across the centuries, it retained a charm that would have made Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare proud.

The oak paneled room, dark furniture, and crystal made for understated class. He smiled. Sort of like Kate, sitting across from him in her coral green dress that tastefully displayed her tantalizing cleavage. Red wavy tresses spilling over her shoulders framed her ivory face and gray cat-like eyes. He’d been envious of the jade dangling between her breasts ever since she’d put on the necklace.

Kate wasn’t doing anything intentionally to provoke him, yet he was as hard as he would’ve been if she was stark naked. Kate Noble projected a naturally seductive air. If he had his druthers, they’d race back to the cottage and forget about the play.

But Kate was so looking forward to seeing a Shakespearean play in Stratford. She’d been to England a few times, but had never made it to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

She checked her watch.

“We won’t be late,” he said. “I always get the woman to the church or the theater on time.”

She frowned at his lame attempt at levity.

They certainly needed more laughter. Maybe Shakespeare would help. “Do you want dessert?”

“Are you sure there’s time?”

He glanced around the room. “Most of these folks are probably going to the theater. There’s no stampede yet. Yes, I think there’s time.” Wasn’t this the moment for one of them to say Let’s save the dessert until later?

But neither did.

Was Janet having second thoughts? #SnippetSunday #SnipSun #WeekendWritingWarriors #LGBTQ #ff #EroticRomance #Sale

The reappearance of svelte, reserved Janet Baxter in Brenda’s life is nothing less than a gift, worthy of every enticement Brenda can conjure up.

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday,
the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write – and read!
Click on the graphics to travel to the other snippets.

This week I’m reaching back to an early sapphic romance, The Lady Wants More, which is on sale this week for 99 cents. You can read the story behind this book HERE.

Set-Up

Janet has agreed to meet Brenda at the ballet and come over for dessert afterwards – will Brenda’s high hopes be realized? She’s tempting Janet with what she knows is her favorite… and you can, too. The recipe follows the excerpt.

EXCERPT

Ten sentences…

Checking the timer, Brenda waited impatiently for the crème brûlée to finish. She seldom used a timer when she cooked, which was a rare event in itself, but she didn’t want to rush the dessert, even though her heart had been beating rapidly ever since she’d returned to her loft earlier in the afternoon.

She glanced at the wall clock. She shouldn’t feel so rushed—there was plenty of time before she had to leave to meet Janet. She still had to take a bubble bath, do her nails, and shave relevant body parts.

She wanted everything to be just right for Janet. There were no guarantees, but she certainly hoped Janet wouldn’t back out at the last moment. Their brief conversation the evening before had left her in more doubt about what to expect tonight than their previous chat had. Janet had seemed more aloof, more distant, less sure of herself. Was Janet having second thoughts?

And a little more…

Probably third and fourth, if Brenda knew Janet at all. That woman could analyze anything to death. But she’d sounded ready, almost eager, only a few days earlier.

Brenda set out wine glasses, dessert spoons, and napkins on the kitchen table. She double-checked the timer. Plenty of time. Needing to stay busy, she headed for the bathroom. Soaking in a lavender bubble bath should calm her nerves.

THE RECIPE

White Chocolate Crème Brûlée

Preheat oven to 275.

Melt 6 oz White Chocolate into 2 cups heavy whipping cream. Let cool to room temp.

Whisk 6 egg yolks. Whisk in one third cup of sugar.  Whisk in cream/chocolate mixture. Whisk in 3 tbs cognac

Set aside. Sprinkle shavings of bittersweet chocolate into bottoms of 6 ramekins.  Divide custard mixture between the ramekins.  Sprinkle more bittersweet chocolate on top.

Place ramekins in baking pan. Fill pan with warm water halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake 35 min.

Refrigerate 2 hours – 2 days.

Before serving, sprinkle with sugar and blowtorch (or place under pre-heated broiler) until the sugar is caramelized.

EXCERPT

Set Up: After running into each other at their twentieth college reunion, Brenda has persuaded Janet to bail and hit a bar they frequented as undergraduates. Now they’re dancing together…

Brenda spun around to face Janet when they got to the far corner of the dance floor. She knew Janet would prefer to be in the corner rather than on the front edge, where bar patrons could easily gawk at them. She preferred center stage herself, but—she grinned at her partner—tonight she’d cater to Janet’s desires. She just wished she could get a better read on them. Did they include her, yet? She saw no need to rush things, now that they’d reconnected after all these years.

Brenda had already decided Janet needed, once again, to break out of her shell and get on with her life. Of course, Brenda had often been accused of making quick judgments, if not rash ones. But she was sure the universe hadn’t crossed their paths just so they could share a drink and swap life stories. While she wasn’t looking for a permanent relationship—whatever that was—she was always on the lookout for a relationship that might offer enough challenge and spice to keep her going for more than a night or two.

Brenda smiled at Janet. She knew for certain this tall, dark-haired woman with gorgeous, long legs could provide ample challenge and spice for some time. She held out her hands, interlaced her fingers with Janet’s, and picked up the beat to the fast-paced hip-hop music. At arm’s length, they swayed and stepped to the music. They circled each other.

Brenda filled her lungs. Her body throbbed with the music. Her brain clicked into hypersensitive mode—once again, she’d become the huntress. “Are you ready for me?”

THE STORY BEHIND THE LADY WANTS MORE

Some of you may remember a marvelous e-publisher that was among the first to publish and promote LGBTQ books – Torquere Press, 2003-2016. I am deeply sorry it is gone. Their editing staff and graphic artists were marvelous to work with.

Sometime in early 2010, Torquere put out a submissions call for a twelve-book lesbian romance series featuring the signs of the Zodiac. My sun sign is Cancer, and I immediately knew I wanted to write a heroine who shared my sign: nurturing, loyal, reserved, resistant to change, seeks a well-ordered life. And there’s more – the Cancer Zodiac symbol is a crab, well known to scuttle backwards to reach its destination. Like my heroine Janet, I often take a circuitous route to accomplish my goals.

Who to partner her with? Go with what you know. My husband is Aquarius, the opposite of orderly, structured – a sign that can never be put in any box. Voila, Brenda emerged to challenge the reserved and hesitant Janet. They were a lot of fun to write.

The Torquere Press edition was published in June, 2011 – under the sign of Cancer, of course. Our contract was for two years, so when rights reverted to us, we thoroughly edited it, expanded some scenes, and published it under our own imprint in October of 2014.

I’d always loved our cover, and I’d met the original cover artist, Alessia Brio, at a writer’s conference a while earlier. I was thrilled she was willing to adapt her original cover for our new edition.

EXCERPT

Set-Up: A few days after their brief connection at the twenty-year high school reunion, Janet is pacing her bedroom, cell phone in hand, with Brenda’s number already entered. She finally hits “send”…

“Hi, Janet,” Brenda chirped, “I hoped you would call soon. So are you joining me for the ballet?”

Janet rolled her eyes. Obviously, caller ID hadn’t allowed her to surprise Brenda. “I’m fine. How are you?”

“Oh,” Brenda replied. “Sorry, should’ve asked first. I’ve had a good week so far. Though thinking about you has been a distraction at times.”

“Oh.” Janet held her breath. It hadn’t occurred to her Brenda might think about her as much as she’d been thinking about Brenda. Distraction? That was a mild way of putting it. Brenda had been an ever-present weight since they’d parted Saturday night.

“So,” Brenda cooed, “have you thought about me much these last few days?”

“Some.”

“Just some.”

“A lot,” Janet confessed.

“That’s better. I’d hate to be the only one losing sleep.”

“Losing sleep?” Janet blurted out. “You, too? I didn’t think you’d lose sleep over me.”

“Two a.m. on the dot. Haven’t missed a night yet.”

“Oh my. I wake at two also.”

Brenda chuckled. “I told you there is some sort of karma at work here. So what do you think?”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe there’s karma, or maybe you’ll join me a week from Friday?”

“I have to be in the city that afternoon for a meeting with an author and her publisher.”

“How convenient. So you’ll join me for dinner and the ballet?”

“I don’t know about dinner. It’s a late-afternoon meeting, the only time the publisher could clear her calendar. Maybe we shouldn’t plan on dinner.” Janet swallowed and wet her lips. “Before.”

She could imagine Brenda mulling over the implications of that single word. She wished she was more skilled at veiled repartee, but she never had been.

“Ah,” Brenda said at last. “My loft isn’t far from the theater. Of course, you could drop by after your meeting to freshen up. Though if you do that, we might not make it to the ballet.”

Failing to hold back a giggle, Janet said, “You’re pretty confident, as usual.” She sobered. “I’ll change clothes in a restroom before heading over to meet you at the theater. I often do that when I have plans after work and don’t want to go home first.”

“You do plan ahead. Let’s grab a sandwich on our own before the performance, then, and have drinks and dessert afterward at my place.”

Janet closed her eyes and nodded. “That sounds good.”

“Your enthusiasm overwhelms,” Brenda chided. “Do you still love crème brûlée?”

Janet responded quickly, “Of course I do. But I wouldn’t want you to go to a lot of work.”

“Not a problem. I don’t have anything on my calendar from mid-Friday afternoon on—except you.”

Aria stretched forth her jeweled fingers, and Jamie found herself in a different space. Dozens of candles formed a ring in which the trio sat on colorful pillows, and shadowy images flickered across mirrored walls. It might have been an Arabian dwelling, a Gypsy tent, or a sacred Celtic chamber.

Jamie huddled closer to Ryan. Wherever they were, they were no longer in the Minnesota north woods. What had they gotten themselves into—and how were they ever going to get back to their tent? The goddess looked friendly enough, but she wasn’t real. She couldn’t be real.

BLURB

The dazzling and timeless love goddess Aria pays a visit to struggling thirty-something Jamie and Ryan Hazleton, who are on the brink of divorce.  When the hot sex that results from her first lesson cools to icy glares, Aria decides to move in with them and provide more experiential learning.  Can Ryan overcome his jealousy of Jamie’s uninhibited response to the delectable goddess? What if he succumbs to his own desires?  Only time will tell whether this love triangle with an immortal will ignite or extinguish the dying embers of Jamie and Ryan’s love.

EXCERPT

Set-up: Aria has brought Ryan and Jamie to a secluded cloister, one of Jamie’s favorite spots in the Twin Cities.

The three of them had climbed the wrought iron stairs six flights to the very top of the tower. Its stone ceiling protected them from the elements. The small open windows artfully carved in the stone walls provided access to spectacular views of the surrounding gardens. Jamie could see beds of orange, pink, red, pale blue and green. Flowers and shrubs of more varieties than she could name dotted the meandering sidewalks. Here and there she saw splendid tall trees—pine and cedar, for sure, and perhaps maple and oak. Jamie inhaled deeply. Would she ever get enough of the refreshing spirit permeating this space?

“I see that you connect with this place, Jamie,” Aria said. “That is good. These stones have witnessed much and will be enlivened by your sincerity and your odyssey through the sexual delights.”

Jamie turned to stare at the goddess of love. “Here?” she mouthed.

“This is perfect. Hardly anyone is around, and you already have a special place in your heart for these stones. I cannot imagine that we will find a better location in which to take a small risk in sharing our love.”

“But what if somebody comes?”

Aria grinned demurely. “No doubt, somebody will come.”

“I don’t mean that.”

“We won’t be bothered,” Aria said, glancing out one of the small windows. “Why don’t you stand over here, Jamie? Put your hands and shoulders in the window. There. You can see that no one is approaching the door below.”

“That’s true enough,” Jamie said, bending over to check below. Quickly, her skirt lay draped over her back and her buttocks pleasantly cooled. She hadn’t realized how hot she’d become. Hands cradled her rear; Aria’s long fingernails swept across her butt while Ryan’s stubbier fingers plied at her cleft. Jamie widened her stance.

“She’s quite ready for you, Ryan. Why don’t you drop your sweatpants and do your wife right here? I know you want to. She’s prepared, are you?”

“I’m as hard as these rocks. I’m ready.”

“Good, let me link the two of you.”

Jamie didn’t have to look to know the goddess was parting her nether lips and guiding Ryan’s cock. Its head pushed onward quickly, seating itself deep in her sex. She braced herself against the window, waiting for Ryan to take her to a familiar place. She kept her eyes open to guard against discovery. The cloister gardens remained serene with no one about.

Familiar places? This was one of those places, but today it seemed different, even more inviting, more welcoming. Her husband pinched her rear and began to take her slowly at first then faster. Her breath became ragged. She wanted to touch her aroused bud but didn’t want to risk losing her precarious perch in the window.

“Ah,” she sighed. The fingers caressing her clitoris had also become familiar. She trusted them, just as much as her husband’s. Electric shocks began coursing from her pussy to her brain. Did they emanate from Ryan’s cock, from Aria’s fingers, from the stone, or from her imagination?

A movement beside the rose bed directly below caught her eye. She shriveled. Where had that man come from? He waved at her and grinned. It was maddening. She was so close to bursting. The bald-headed man with a gray beard couldn’t possibly know what Ryan and Aria were doing to her.

Ryan slammed hard against her butt, nearly forcing her shoulders through the window. She pushed back against his thighs. That only seemed to stir him more.

“There’s a man out there,” she whispered. “He’s staring at me. Stop.” Her circuits began to explode one by one. “No, don’t stop. He can’t possibly know.” She tried desperately not to be overtaken by her mounting orgasm. She wouldn’t scream and give them away.

The man waved at her with his cane. What was he shouting? How could she possibly hear him? He was too far away. But he seemed very intent on getting her attention.

“Enjoy.” She heard the words as if the man stood right in front of her. “Don’t let me stop your pleasure. Let it go. Scream your wails of pleasure. The stones want to hear. I want to hear.”

Jamie bit down on her tongue but could not hold back. Her brow furrowed and she screamed, “Yes, oh my heavens! Yes, I’m coming!”

The older man placed the cane over his arm and applauded. “You are good for an old man’s soul, you temptress of the cloister.

EXCERPT

Set-Up: When Jamie confesses one of her fantasies is making love on a grand piano, Aria transports her and Ryan to another dimension and sets the scene…

Swaying to the lilting score of the Abduction from the Seraglio, Jamie marveled again at how Mozart’s music filled her soul. Her fingers flew across the keyboard of the baby grand piano and the tempo increased. It was a splendid instrument, very responsive to the slightest touch.

The tempo slowed; she wiggled her bottom and resettled herself on the bench. She glanced at the door. There in the entryway stood a strange man dressed almost entirely in black.

Jamie played on, not frightened by the man, yet curious. His white ruffled shirt was open at the throat.  Black pants and boots were almost obscured by a black cape with a red lining, which the man drew across his chest once he realized she’d seen him standing there.  On his head sat a wide-brimmed black hat with one side turned up like a rough rider’s. Even more distinctive was the long red plume tucked into the hat band.

She continued playing while assessing the stranger. An extraordinary man, really.  To top things off, he wore a small dark mask. Was he Zorro come to protect her?  Was he a brigand come to plunder her? Was he the phantom drawn from the rafters, attracted by her opera music?

She played on, watching carefully as the stranger removed his hat and bowed deeply before her. He neither smiled nor frowned.  He said nothing.  She asked nothing.

He walked toward her, then came around the bench to stand behind her.  She couldn’t see what he was doing. She didn’t turn around. She played on.

Something light and fluffy grazed her neck. Jamie smiled.  She recognized the touch as coming from the stranger’s long red plume. It was soft against her skin.  She lowered her chin, offering more of her neck.

The man played with the plume, guiding it the length of her neck. He eased it toward her throat, and then let the tip of the feather play across her breasts, partially clothed in a sleek yellow dress.

She played on; not ignoring the stranger, but waiting. What will you do next, my masked man? When would she stop him?

Happy New Year! A look back at my first published romance novel #EroticRomance #FFM #LoveGoddess @ExtasyBooks

Picture this: It’s early summer, and you’ve spent the day hiking and canoeing in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters, barely south of Canada. After a comfy evening by the campfire, you and your main squeeze are snugly zipped into your sleeping bags inside your tent. You wake – and the sky above the lake is pulsing with light.

That’s the scene my husband and I wrote into the opening of our first published romance novel.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Do you have New Year resolutions? For me, the turning of the year is always a moment to evaluate where I’ve come and where I want to go. This year, Mr. Kraft and I took a moment to look back – we now have a total of fifty-eight published romance books available for sale, including novels, novellas, and a few short stories.

My 2024 resolution? To get these books back out in front of you, our readers, one a week, every Monday, through all of 2024 and then some!. I’ll share them in pretty much the order in which they were published.

THE STORY BEHIND COLORS OF THE NIGHT

Sometime in late December 2004, having completed three romance manuscripts and sent them off to countless editors and agents with nibbles but no contract offers, Mr. Kraft and I sat down and wrote out some goals. At the top of that list was become a published author in 2005.

Did we succeed? That depends on how you count it. We did sign our first contract late in 2005 – for a romantic suspense, to be published in 2007, with an e-publisher that released books on a schedule of one a week. We counted that a success.

Meanwhile we kept writing and broadened our submission targets to include a wider range of e-publishers. If you’re a relative newcomer to reading romance, you won’t remember those early days before Kindle and Nook. E-publishing first began to coalesce in the early 2000s, and the first e-books were released as PDFs. There was no such thing as an “e-reader.” An e-book was something to be read on a computer, and e-publishers faced an uncertain future.

The publisher who’d offered that first contract didn’t handle erotic romance, but they recommended another e-publisher to us for that genre. We submitted a synopsis and first chapter for Colors of the Night and were thrilled to have almost immediate acceptance – perhaps the two-week turnaround should have told us something, but we were still newbies. So was the publisher.

I still have a vivid memory of that first book release date, in September, 2006. The book released on a Friday, and we’d been traveling out west in our motorhome but were part way back, camped in Minden, Nebraska. The publisher hosted a reader chat with every release date – in order to participate, I had to hunker on a chair in the campground office to get internet reception.

One reader question from that chat is lodged in my memory: why a “love goddess” and not a “love god?” Because a love goddess is who turned up most often in our own fantasies, aided perhaps by some excellent adult videos written and directed by women. Colors of the Night staked our claim on what we love most and write most often: Happy endings for bisexual women.

Unfortunately for us, that first e-publisher (like so many early ones) went belly up in only a matter of months, and we were never paid any royalties. It took a while for our rights to be returned to us, but as soon as they were, we submitted Colors of the Night to the publisher we have stayed with ever since: Extasy Books, one of the earliest and longest-lived among e-publishers. It has been available through Extasy Books since July, 2009.

EXCERPT

Jamie heard the tent zipper open and felt the rush of cool night air all in the same instant. Where was Ryan going in the middle of the night? Startled, she lifted her head and opened her eyes. A tiny sliver of night sky was visible through the open tent flap—and it was pulsating with light.

“Jamie. Wake up. You’ve got to see this.” Ryan’s voice was a whisper.

Did he really want her to join him? She hugged herself against the chill, grabbed her sweatshirt, and crawled out of the tent.

Ryan’s hands were reaching for her, so she took them and let him pull her to a stand. Tall columns of color—multiple hues of greens, blues, reds, yellows, and occasional whites—fell in a shimmering waterfall connecting sky and lake. The colors danced across the entire dome of the sky. She’d never seen anything like it.

They stood hand in hand for a long minute, then wordlessly walked down to the lakeshore and sat side by side on a low rock. Shrouded in rising mist, the lake seemed to be hovering between earth and sky with no boundary. Jamie lost herself in the throbbing rhythms of the dancing light.

“This is what I’ve been missing,” she heard herself say. “It feels like magic, like time is suspended. I wish we could catch and hold this moment forever.”

“I know,” Ryan replied. “It’s been difficult to remember such moments. I sometimes wonder what else we’ve forgotten.”

“You have each forgotten how to love.”

Jamie gasped and squeezed Ryan’s hand. “Who said that?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I said that.”

Jamie watched in awe as the mist swirled and collected itself into the shape of a stunning female. The image pirouetted as if to prove she was much more than a vision. Jamie tried not to stare. The woman’s copper skin was barely concealed in a gauzy white gown; Jamie could make out her darkened nipples as the image floated closer to them.

“You two need help.” The phantom shook her head, sending her long dark hair flying.  “Your marriage is crumbling. You care for each other, but you’ve forgotten how to love—if you ever truly knew how.”
