Stay Sexy

Stay Sexy ~ What’s YOUR word?

This morning I’ve been re-reading blogs on a list I keep for inspiration for this weekly column on staying vibrant, healthy, exciting and sexy across the life style. I needed that, because with the holidays and a horrific case of bronchitis hubs came down with Christmas day, my usually faithful routine flew out the window. I wasn’t finding the motivation inside myself to conquer it, so I turned to my virtual support network.

Here’s the article I re-read, by Molly Alexander Darden:

How One Word Drove Me to Cross the Bridge From Old Age to Youthful Vitality

And here’s my favorite quote:

I committed to do whatever it took to feel vital again.”

What she stumbled upon was the one activity that could entice her to put in the necessary hard work – the sport she used to do that gave her the feeling she remembered and wanted back. For her, it was water skiing.

Did I mention she’s at least seventy? It’s clear she has resources – once she identified what activity would inspire her to shed those pounds and get in shape, she was able to hire a specialized coach to see her through the process. But that’s not what I took from her blog, and it’s not what you need, either.

What she focused on was the remembered feeling of excitement, achievement, and vitality. Those feelings are stored in our very bones and muscles, and those memory traces can propel us towards our goal.

So here’s another quote – and my New Years wish for you, as you enter 2014:

“I love being able to tell people what I’m doing now, instead of what I used to do.”

And yes, I did my workout between reading the article and writing this column. Go, me!

Have fun, and Stay Sexy!

Stay Sexy ~ Make Time for Wonder

Imagine this: After years of intense scientific training, you are part of a carefully selected team sent on earth’s first mission to the moon, to map it, photograph it, and observe as much about it as you can. On your fourth orbit, as you are photographing and describing a large crater, your orbiter begins a scheduled roll, and suddenly this is the view outside your window:

Source: Wikimedia

Forty Five years ago on Christmas Eve day, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders accidentally became the first humans to witness earthrise as their lunar orbiter slowly turned towards the moon’s horizon. Abandoning the protocol of “scheduled” photographs, they scrambled to find color film in time to record the sight that so moved them, and the rest is history.

This year, NASA has given us the gift of re-experiencing this moment in a stunning seven minute video available at this LINK.

How to Stay Sexy? Take time out from the pressure and hectic schedule of the holiday season, and let yourself taste this moment of wonder. You’ll be glad you did.

I’ll leave you with a favorite Einstein quotation:

“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed.”

Stay Sexy ~ Have More Sex!

Okay, you know this column is all about staying healthy, vibrant, exciting and sexy across the life cycle.

Did you know that having sex more often might make you look younger?

Just a caveat – staying sexy isn’t so much about looking younger as it is about feeling younger, staying active, taking care of our bodies and enjoying what our bodies can do, whatever they look like.

But here’s a tidbit of research that was featured this past week in Yahoo Shine, in an article called “10 Surprising Ways to Look Younger.”

Alongside traditional (and not so surprising)  research-based advice to lower your blood pressure, get more sleep, and avoid smoking, item #5 reads as follows:

5. Have More Sex
In one study, a panel of judges perceived people who had regular sex (four times a week, on average) to look 7 to 12 years younger than their actual age, according to Superyoung: The Proven Way to Stay Young Forever. Researchers say that sex spurs the release of human growth hormone, which may help timeproof your skin by promoting elasticity.”

And the great thing about this? You don’t have to have a partner to accomplish it – solo sex counts just as much as sex with someone. Every orgasm improves blood flow, balances hormones, and boosts collagen, all contributing to that healthy (satisfied?) glow we’d love to shine with.

Looks like a win-win to us!

Stay Sexy ~ Wish It

Here’s a window sign we saw this week in our RV Park, when we were taking one of our twenty minute power walks:

Wish It

Dream It

Do It

It rings true for us on so many levels. In one of our forthcoming books, the hero tells the heroine these words:

“Listen kid, if you hang around me much you’ll have to get used to expanding your dreams. I don’t dream small. It doesn’t take any more time to dream big than small.”

We have wished:

To be a published novelist – check.

To live and travel in our motorhome full time – check.

To spend our days doing work we love – check.

To do whatever’s in our power to stay healthy, excited, vibrant and sexy as we age – check.

What do you wish for? What are your dreams filled with? Here’s to taking action!

Have fun, and Stay Sexy!

Stay Sexy ~ If Not Now, When?

If not Now, When?

What is the key, exactly, that enables a person to turn things around and make the commitment to living a healthy, vibrant (and yes, sexy) life? When I’m interviewing authors about their healthy life changes for this column, I ask a couple different questions to try to get at this: What prompted you to begin making this change?  Is there a particular person or event that serves as inspiration and motivation for you?

I’m sure if I ever found an answer that would work for everyone, I could bottle it, sell it, and become a millionaire. That choice point is so different, so intensely personal, so deeply anchored in individual history that there’s never a one size fits all.

By now, if you’ve followed our Stay Sexy column at all, you know my husband’s bypass surgery a few years ago was such a turning point for us. We’ve come to claim If Not Now, When? as our personal mantra.

It’s embedded in a series of guidelines I stumbled upon in a motivational speech I once attended by accident. The speaker’s three points were as follows

  1. Decide what you want.
  2. Decide what you’re willing to give up to get it.
  3. Take action now.

Works for me. The beauty is, it worked as the wake-up call for some major lifestyle changes a few years back, and it works on a daily basis, any time I don’t feel like putting in the effort to start my workout or stick to my healthy eating. What do I truly want? And if I don’t go after it now, when?

Hope it works for some of you! Have fun, and Stay Sexy!

Stay Sexy ~ Interview with Siobhan Muir

Hubs and I loved meeting and hanging out with Siobhan Muir last month at the Hot Mojave Knights Reader Event in Las Vegas – so when we learned she’d recently started working out, we invited her to be interviewed for our Stay Sexy column.

Welcome, Siobhan, and thanks so much for joining us to talk about staying sexy and healthy! As you know, hubs and I launched our weekly column, Stay Sexy, in February. Both of us have faced some health challenges, and we’ve thrown ourselves into learning and doing whatever’s in our power to maximize our health and our future.

Over the last year we’ve noticed other erotic romance authors posting about weight loss, diet issues, workouts and health challenges, so we decided it would be great to involve you and others like you in the conversation and give our readers a chance to benefit from what you’ve learned.

Adriana: My first question is, what are the health-related changes you’ve been focused on recently – what are your goals?

Siobhan: My goals are to be happier with my body as it is in reality and to change my perception of what beautiful means. The media would like us all to believe that size sub-zero is the goal, but I want to be beautiful for my husband, who likes boobs, butts, bellies, and hips. Can’t have that at sub-zero. I’ve changed my diet (that doesn’t mean “gone on a diet.” It means changed what I’m eating and how much), decreased the amount of sugar, and increased my exercise regime to keep my body functioning for a long time.

Adriana: What prompted you to begin making this change?

Siobhan: I was tired of feeling like “frump-girl” as Nina says in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I used to wear men’s t-shirts and baggy jeans, and I can’t believe my husband found me at all feminine when he first met me. But one day I decided I wanted to look like a woman, not just a graduate student, and I started buying more form-fitting clothes to show off my woman’s body. When I didn’t particularly like what I saw, I decided I had to make an effort to improve the image in the mirror.

Adriana: Is there a particular person or event that serves as inspiration and motivation for you?

Siobhan: Heh! The event that sticks out in my mind was Authors After Dark Reader Convention in New Orleans in 2012. I was going and they had a costume event that necessitated a corset. Uh-huh. So I started running on my elliptical for 30 minutes a day for 15 days straight. I released several pounds and a couple of inches by the time of the event. And I looked and felt great. I’ve just continued to run to keep releasing all the extra weight I’ve accumulated since having kids.

Adriana: I love your wording, “released” several pounds instead of just “lost” them. You’ve let them go! “Looked and felt great” are terrific motivators. I, for one, never frown at having appearance as a prime motivator – especially with your balanced and healthy view of what’s an attractive appearance.

What about these changes has been most difficult for you?

Siobhan: Fighting the urge to not do it. It’s easy to say you don’t have time or you’re too tired or it’s too hot, too cold, too late, too early. There are any number of excuses you can throw at yourself to avoid running. But in reality, it’s just your mind, and I had to train my mind to remember how good I felt (both physically and mentally) after I finished running. Not an easy thing to do.

Adriana: A daily struggle, at my house, too. When you bump up against one of these hurdles, what are your most tried and true tactics for overcoming it? What works for you?

Siobhan: Putting on my shoes. Sounds funny, doesn’t it? But once I’m dressed in my sports bra and shorts, and tying my shoes, I can’t back down from actually getting on my elliptical and running. The conversation goes something like this:
“I don’t wanna run!”
“Aw, hell, I’ve already got my shoes on and I got a free half hour. It’s not that big a deal. Where are my headphones?”
“But it’s hot.” *insert whine here*
“And the shower afterwards will feel awesome, along with the huge glass of ice water. Let’s do a workout.”
“It’s gonna be hard.”
“And it’s gonna feel so good when we stop. Ready?”
“Sigh. Okay.”
I don’t let the whiner win because I feel better at the end, even if I’ve kicked my own ass.

Adriana: Putting on your shoes doesn’t sound funny at all! It’s amazing how taking that first action step, however tiny, can start the entire action chain. In some ways, the tinier that first step, the easier it is to “just do it,” and then keep going. I do the same thing: I start by just standing still and swinging my arms front to back. Once I’ve done that, I’m already “moving,” and positive inertia sets in: it’s easier to keep on moving.

What do you find most rewarding so far?

Siobhan: Other than my looks and the compliments I’ve received from folks who haven’t seen me in a while? That I feel good about myself and I like what I see in the mirror. The compliments are great. My own satisfaction with my appearance is even better.

Adriana: Sometimes we start out with one purpose and goal, and as we get going, we find that the changes we’re making spill over into other areas of our lives, hopefully in a good way. Has anything like that been happening for you?

Siobhan: I don’t like feeling sick. At all. I hate to throw up or have an unhappy stomach. Since changing my diet, I no longer get sick to my stomach, or throw up, or get some of the other nasty things that happen to women. I no longer get yeast infections because yeast feeds on sugar and my choice to decrease my sugar intake has cured me of nearly monthly infections. It was awful. So in addition to releasing the weight I carry on my belly (which is bad for diabetes later in life), I stopped eating so much sugar (which also encourages diabetes) and stopped getting sick.

Adriana:  Thanks for sharing about the yeast issues – it’s not just localized yeast infections that are affected by sugar. Systemic yeast infections have huge negative consequences for our entire bodies, and can be nearly eliminated if we avoid refined sugars. Plus, did you know that sugar depresses our immune system? It’s no wonder you’re feeling healthier all around!

What has been the reaction of other people you’re close to?

Siobhan: “Oh my god, you’re so slender! You look great.” 🙂 YAY! Everyone has been very supportive and they share some of their food choice changes with me. It has been a very positive experience for me.

Adriana: Have you written a character who faces any of these same issues? Tell us about him or her.

Siobhan: I haven’t written one. I think I see so many women writers going through weight issues that it never occurred to me to write about one. However, ALL my female characters are “normal” women with normal bodies that range between the sizes of 8 and 16 (and 8 is on the small side because she’s petite). I feel very strongly about changing what is considered beautiful in the public eye. We have to start taking back what the media says we should think is beautiful. We have to start looking at those supermodels and hand them a pizza because women should have boobs, butts, bellies and hips. It’s what makes them feminine and sexy. Metabolisms aside, ribs and hip bones shouldn’t be visible to be beautiful.

Body appearance is huge in the feminine mind. Particularly the primal side of us that says we must attract a mate, and keep him once we’ve got him. Men in particular are visual so we worry about our bodies to keep him interested. I have one character, Sarah Flanagan, who is a single mom and has stretch marks from the birth of her son. She’s nervous about what the hero Alex MacLaren will think of her appearance (since the media says we should be afraid to show our stripes). As I recall, he growls (he’s a Hell Hound) when she tries to cover up. Men like women in all shapes and sizes, and beauty shouldn’t be dictated by companies trying to sell products. This story is entitled A Hell Hound’s Fire and is free everywhere right now.

Adriana: Thanks for that – I just downloaded A Hell Hound’s Fire, looking forward!

What advice or tips would you like to pass on to our wonderful readers?

Siobhan: Just like writing, never give up, never surrender. The only one holding you back from getting that better body or stronger body or better health (and beauty) is you. Don’t believe the media on what’s beautiful. Make your own decision. And when you look at yourself in the mirror, don’t say “how awful.” Tell yourself, “I see the beautiful person in there and here are some of the changes I can make to bring her/him out.” Look in to changing your diet and cutting down sugar. Look into increasing your exercise, even if it’s only walking. Little things add up and make big changes. And you can friend me on Facebook and see when I kick my own ass again. 😀 http://www.facebook.com/siobhan.muir.35

Adriana: Great advice! Thanks so much for visiting with us today. Hubs and I truly enjoyed meeting you and spending time with you at Hot Mojave Knights – it’s great to be “neighbors” (relatively speaking) here in Las Vegas!

Stay Sexy ~ Author Interview with Jambrea Jo Jones

We get so excited whenever we see other authors posting about major life changes for a more healthy lifestyle. Today we’re thrilled to welcome Jambrea Jo Jones, who accepted a challenge, stuck with it, and just keeps on going:

Adriana: Welcome, Jambrea, and thanks so much for joining us to talk about staying sexy and healthy!

My first question is, what are the health-related changes you’ve been focused on recently – what are your goals?

Jambrea: First, thanks for having me. 🙂 Second, I was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago. I also found out that I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I don’t want to be on meds. I’ve tried starting before but took a big break. The last time I was at my doctors I was told I was controlling my issues with diet. I know during my big break I was getting back up there with my weight and knew I had to start again and find a way it would hopefully stick.

Adriana: I’m familiar with how it can creep back up, even when you think you’re not doing things all that differently. Suddenly there you are, and the scales, the mirror, and the clothing all deliver the same (unwelcome) story :).

So clearly you’d had motivation and worked at this in the past – what, specifically, prompted you to take it back up this time?

Jambrea: Someone on Facebook issued a 100 day challenge. On the first day I decided—I need to do this right. So I stopped drinking pop and started watching what I eat.

Adriana: I love that – someone issues a challenge, and you step right up to the plate. And bat it out of the park, I might add :).

Those are two of the smartest moves anyone can make – simply cutting out pop makes a huge impact. It’s not just the calorie difference, it’s the fructose, which actually creates a craving for sugar. It’s so much easier to avoid high/simple carbs altogether once we cut back on fructose.

Is there a particular person or event that serves as inspiration and motivation for you?

Jambrea: My motivation was the challenge. It was issued and I thought—this is something I can do. It will be easy and I can do it at home. Also, posting to Facebook. It’s like I’m accountable for what I’m doing.

Adriana: I hadn’t thought of that. Some of the first tips successful people recommend are being accountable to someone and having a support person, but by using Facebook, you have a vast  network of them. Plus, that’s how I found out you were doing this – now you can count me in as part of your support team!

What about these changes has been most difficult for you?

Jambrea: Making sure I do my exercise every day. One thing I’m proud of is the fact that I have stuck with what I set out to do. I’ve added things and subtracted things, but my core three exercises I have stuck to.

Adriana: Good for you! That’s a tough one for me, too, and I’ll admit to skipping a workout here and there. Some mornings I just don’t feel like it – and those are the mornings I probably need it most. Usually just knowing how much better I’m going to feel afterwards gets me started.

When you bump up against one of these hurdles, what are your most tried and true tactics for overcoming it? What works for you?

Jambrea: Knowing that I won’t be able to post on Facebook that I completed my day. And the PM’s I’ve received asking what I’m doing. Having people tell me I inspire them. Those things keep me going and I hope it will keep up past the 100 day challenge.

Adriana: I love it – not just the accountability, but the awareness you’re helping and inspiring others.

What do you find most rewarding so far?

Jambrea: How I feel. It isn’t just the inches and weight lost, it’s feeling good and not muddled.

Adriana: Perfect – you probably know by now, that’s a source of motivation that will last a lifetime. It’s so clear that for you, this time it’s not a “diet,” it’s a lifestyle change – one that leads to not just health but vibrancy.

Sometimes we start out with one purpose and goal, and as we get going, we find that the changes we’re making spill over into other areas of our lives, hopefully in a good way. Has anything like that been happening for you?

Jambrea: It hasn’t happened yet, but here is hoping it will spill over into my housework. J

Adriana: LOL. I haven’t found it makes housework any more inviting, but actually it has made housework less exhausting, so that’s a good thing. Also, I think probably the “feeling good and not muddled” is a way it’s spilled over from your first goals.

What has been the reaction of other people you’re close to? (family, friends; support? Any undermining?)

Jambrea: Everyone has been SO supportive. I’ve even got my son thinking about what he is doing and eating. That is a big plus for me.

Adriana: How fabulous! Changes in diet often do impact an entire household, so it’s neat that the response is positive.

Have you written a character who faces any of these same issues? Tell us about him or her.

Jambrea: I did. Kind of. My book Annihilation, which is an m/m sci-fi story, has a character who starts the story out of shape and overweight. He was out of the military and his health went downhill, but something happens that forces him to get into shape. He has no choice. And it really correlates with me because I was in the military and was medically discharged and let myself go.

Adriana: Sorry to hear about the medical discharge, and also, kudos to you, for serving. It can be difficult to move from such a structured environment into one where we have to create and stick to our own self-imposed structure, even when we’re healthy, so your situation was even more of a challenge.

What advice or tips would you like to pass on to our wonderful readers?

Jambrea: Stick with it. If you have a day when you cave and eat something you shouldn’t, don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s a lifestyle change, NOT a diet. I let myself have what I want, I just don’t do it ALL the time. If you’re on a diet you feel like you are restricting yourself and that is when people fall off the wagon. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Adriana: That’s great advice, especially about not beating ourselves up for a slip here and there. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Thanks so much for stopping by and chatting with us today. And please do share with us the blurb for Annihilation – and could we hope for an excerpt, too? Also, don’t forget to give us links to your presence on the web.

BLURB

Alliance

A government agency isn’t a place you’d expect to find love.

Not all are soldiers, but the Alliance has a long arm and touches many lives. The Galaxy may just be big enough for espionage, murder, science and honour among men.

Annihilation

by Jambrea Jo Jones

Book five in the Alliance Series

If you enjoyed Steamroller by Mary Calmes, or Mate Healer by Amber Kell, then this book might just be for you! Make this one of your top romance novels of the year!

It’s the end of the world as they know it…

Ricardo Clark is ex-military working a nine to five job on Earth, a planet that was almost wiped out by the big flood of 2050. The world was changing and trying to regroup under a new government called the Alliance. For most it was business as usual. That is until the old government tries to take back over.

Gilliland Carter was tired of living on the streets. He took a job at a bakery hoping to put some normal back into his life. There was no need for his kind anymore, an undercover cop. The Alliance had a lock down on things and if you weren’t military, you weren’t needed. He didn’t exactly have the look of someone who’d fit into the soldier lifestyle with his tattoos and piercings.

Ricardo and Gilliland take a journey neither of them were prepared for. It will bring them to the brink of death, but can it also bring love?

EXCERPT

Chapter One

‘I WANT YOU.’

The old vintage recruitment sign with the image of Uncle Sam on it mocked Ricardo Clark. The finger pointed in his direction. Someone had marked out the part that said ‘for the U.S. Army’ and written over it with ‘for the Alliance’, some new form of government that had taken over power when the old government had crumbled.

Not that he had to worry. He’d been discharged years ago because of some stupid asthma thing and now he was a hundred pounds overweight, give or take a few pounds. Who would really ‘want’ him? He should have been able to stay in, but the military was overcrowded. They’d stopped recruiting after they pulled out of the Middle East and were looking at reasons to let go soldiers. Hell, with all the advancements in medicine he could have had his asthma cleared up in no time, but he didn’t fight it. Not like he should have done. He had a place to go, others didn’t, and they needed the stability of working for the government.

Rico continued his walk to the bakery. The only thing he was good for was eating a few doughnuts before going to his boring data entry job. After the big flood in 2050 there were tons of data that needed re-entering and a lot more of it lost. With his military career he had the necessary clearances to process the sensitive data so he was pretty secure in his job, unlike some others. It sucked, but it paid the bills. The homeless population was bigger than ever. It also kept his mom off his back. She was always asking him when he was going to find a nice boy and settle down. She’d bring up the old ‘I helped fight for your right to marry whoever you want, now do something about it and make me proud. I want grandkids!’ Rico didn’t even know if he liked kids, not that it was an option now anyway. He was single and barely making ends meet. The job might have been steady, but it wasn’t high-paying.

Before he was born there had been a big fight over government involvement in same-sex marriage and his parents had been in the ‘trenches’ as it were, fighting to make changes. Finally the government had passed a bill stating that it would take no part in deciding who a person could or could not marry and that each state had to abide by this bill, allowing people to marry whoever they wanted to. Or something like that. Rico couldn’t remember the exact wording, but the gist of it was that same-sex couples could get married and have that marriage recognised wherever they went.

There had been a big outcry and some churches had taken a big stand, but, all in all, after a few years, no one really cared and it was business as usual. Still, there were the hatemongers out there, but as time passed they faded away from the spotlight. When Rico had hit puberty it was all old news and there were different things to fight over. The churches prayed over the state of the world and blamed the rest of the nation for the coming apocalypse. Turned out it was a flood, not zombies taking over. The church still took credit saying their God was bringing down the sinners of the world. They never could come up with an explanation for how their congregations weren’t spared.

Rico didn’t really care because faith didn’t really fit into what he wanted out of his life. He had big plans, like with his military career. It was supposed to be his ticket to law enforcement. He was thinking CIA or FBI. Now he was a glamorous clerk sitting behind a desk and clacking away at a keyboard all day.

He finally reached the shop and walked in.

“Rico! Your usual?” The owner winked at him.

Rico nodded and bellied up to the counter to wait for his order. It should’ve made him sad that the pastry people knew him, but he was hungry and running late. He didn’t have time to be upset about a predicament of his own making. No one let him get so out of shape. That was all on him.

There was a new guy behind the counter and Rico couldn’t stop staring. He was rugged and lean with short blond hair that stood on end and bright green eyes. He had scruff on his face and a shiner, like he’d gone a couple of rounds in a fight. But that wasn’t what caught Rico’s gaze. It was the black plugs in his ears and the tattoos running up and down each arm. They were colourful and he wanted a closer look, even leaned over the counter a bit before he caught himself. He could make out some sort of creature’s head on his right shoulder in a dark red with black horns and it looked like wisps of smoke tied everything together. There were a few other things, but he couldn’t make them out without getting closer. On the other arm were a koi fish and cherry blossoms and other small tattoos.

But a man like that wouldn’t look twice at the fat blob he’d become. Maybe when he was still in the military Rico’d have had the balls to approach him. Now he just took his sweets and left the bakery.

The city looked better than it had in years and he enjoyed his walk, taking a big bite of the gooey confection. The weather was nice, the sun shining. He was actually sweating a bit, the hazard of his extra pounds. For the first time he thought maybe he should do something about it. He thought back to the blond with those tattoos and threw his doughnuts into the next trash bin he found, but that didn’t stop him from licking his fingers.

The day was the same old, same old. The only exception was that his thoughts drifted back to the hot guy at the bakery. He knew what his spank fantasies would be about that night. It wasn’t like his job forced him to think. He looked at papers and entered information into the central system that the Alliance had hooked back up after the flood. If it wasn’t for them, the United States would probably still be in the dark.

So he’d enter some top-secret data while picturing himself licking those tattoos. He wondered what the guy’s cock looked like. Hell, he wondered what name he should be screaming.

His supervisor, Mr Jordan, walked over while he was in the middle of a daydream, his cock rock-hard in his pants while he gazed off into nothingness.

“Mr Clark, is there a problem with your computer?”

“No, sir.” Rico sat up straighter.

Desk work sucked the life out of him and his boss was a prick, but he had to do something.

“Good. Back to it then.” Mr Jordan clasped him on the shoulder and walked away.

With a sigh he got back to the daily grind. His dick deflated and he wanted to keep it that way until he got home. Then all bets were off.

Stay Sexy ~ No sex after forty??

No Sex after Forty!

Really?

I’m sure we’re playing right into Miley Cyrus’s hands – her interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show was seven days ago, and here we are still talking about it. That’s what she wants, so she’s succeeded.

She told him she’d heard things went downhill after forty, and that, being fifty-five, he definitely wasn’t “sexual.” Here’s a LINK to the six minute clip of their conversation, in case you missed it:

More power to her—she’s a successful, talented and focused artist.

At twenty.

Which is why we’re taking this on. Probably when I was twenty, I had no clue what people over forty or even older did with their sex lives, if I thought about it at all. But what I don’t want is kids in their twenties thinking it’ll be all over by the time they’re not even halfway through their allotted years. That’s a lot of empty years to be contemplating.

So here’s great news from the other end of the spectrum—just yesterday, we learned that TV star Suzanne Somers, sixty-six, has sex daily with her seventy-seven year old husband. Not just once, but twice a day! Here’s the LINK to that report.

The thing is, if we expect that sex will cease after forty, we can easily create a self fulfilling prophecy.  Will things change, sexually? Is it true (as Miley said) that things tend to go downhill after forty? Of course. Our bodies change, our libido  can morph in the wrong direction, our needs are different and our endurance might shift.

But if we liked sex in our twenties and thirties, there’s no reason to give it up, long past forty. Hubs and I, in our sixties, are still learning and trying out new things. And even though it might be TMI, I’m here to say that yes, we do something sexual together every day, and I, for one, am enjoying my body far more than when I was Miley’s age.

So Rock On, Suzanne Somers – and for all our readers out there, have fun, and Stay Sexy!

Stay Sexy ~ #Poly Goes Mainstream

Here’s last Wednesday’s headline from the New York Post:

“3 no longer a crowd as open relationships see a boom”

Attention grabbing? For sure. Sensationalist? I don’t think so. The article, in fact, is a sensitively done piece on what a range of poly relationships look like from the inside. It accesses some current research, and quotes from Sexpert Tristan Taormino, whose book on the subject, Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships, is selling more copies now than when it was first released in 2008.

Are poly relationships truly on the increase, or are they simply feeling more free to become public? It’s hard to know, but it’s certainly clear we’re hearing more about them.

There were also some fascinating discussions last weekend at Catalyst.Con, which I was unable to attend but followed on its twitter stream. For a peek into what sexperts and professionals are thinking about swinging and poly relationships, follow the hashtag #cconswing and scroll back about a week. A few bon mots:

Janine @OpenJanine We are part of one community: ethical non-monogamists. —@swingsetlife #cconswing #ccon #ssccon

Technogeisha @Technogeisha Not being out give it a “naughty” feeling. Are some swingers worried they will lose that if its out and normal? #cconswing #ssccon

Fred Brown @luhnquil There is no fully out. Every time you meet a new person. It’s just over and over and over again. @ShiraBKatz #cconswing

Dr. Ebony Utley @u_experience some have the privilege to come out; many don’t. race and sexual orientation make publicizing sexual behaviors tricky #cconswing

The other take-away for us, as authors of erotic fiction featuring poly relationships, is that there is a wide variety of choices and arrangements, and there’s no consensus on what the categories are or ought to be. The New York Post offers the following five varieties – but we’ve met so many more, and there are clearly nuances and differences within each, as well.

“Here’s a key to some of the most popular open-relationship styles. And remember, all are consensual — cheating is not kosher!

Open relationship: Umbrella term for any consensual non-monogamous relationship

Polygamy: Think “Big Love.” One spouse, many wives. Illegal.

Monogamish: Don’t-ask-don’t-tell sanctioned cheating in a monogamous relationship

Polyamory: Having a loving relationship — emotional and physical — with multiple people

Swinging: Hook-ups with no-strings attached” [New York Post October 2, 2013]

Of course we hope you’ll take a peek at our Swinging Games Series if you’re curious about some of the swing lifestyle options – we think it offers a pretty realistic snapshot of what a pair of empty-nest baby boomers can experience, and should help feed your fantasies. If you’re looking for more specific guidance, we recommend the book by Tristan Taormino we mentioned at the top of this post, which we will be reviewing in these pages soon.

In the meantime – have fun, and Stay Sexy!

Stay Sexy with CatalystCon

If you’re sex positive, you won’t want to miss CatalystCon next year, and you can catch it on the East Coast in the Spring or the West Coast in the Fall.

This year’s West Coast session is just wrapping up in Woodland Hills, CA—I couldn’t go, but the hashtag #ccon gave me a window on the fabulous presentations and conversations.

Here are some of the best tweets. I’ve left some hashtags on so you can follow the topics that interest you.

The UnSlut Project ‏@UnSlutProject17h Being around people who are accepting helps disarm internal shame.

Arthaey Angosii ‏@arthaey17h “I’ve stopped shaming people who don’t enjoy active lifestyles. People have different priorities.”

Gender and sexuality

Charlie Glickman ‏@charlieglickman19h “Sexual orientation is about who you go to bed with, not who you go to bed as.” Love this! #cconyouth

Charlie Glickman ‏@charlieglickman19h Too many people assume that gender variance is the same as sexual orientation. That needs to stop. #cconyouth

Charlie Glickman ‏@charlieglickman19h Gender variance is about the person. Sexual orientation is about who they’re attracted to. One doesn’t imply the other, #cconyouth

Charlie Glickman ‏@charlieglickman19h Assigned sex is based on a glance of an infant’s genitals. Affirmed gender is someone’s chosen identity. #cconyouth

Charlie Glickman ‏@charlieglickman19h “big strong boy” & “cute little girl” The gender binary starts before birth. “What color are you painting the nursery?” #cconyouth

Arthaey Angosii ‏@arthaey19h “Feminist porn show things mainstream porn tends not to show: connection and chemistry and power and identity.” #cconporn

The UnSlut Project ‏@UnSlutProject19h Feminist porn is like feminism itself bc there’s difference w/in the movement, but that does not = contradiction. @TristanTaormino #cconporn
