#Review: 1066 Turned Upside Down #HistoricalFiction #Midieval #BattleofHastings @AnnieWHistory @HelenHollick

On my side of the pond, the history lessons I grew up with were woefully inadequate when it came to England. My college Western Civ history began with the Renaissance, as though nothing that came before either was known or would have mattered. I knew nothing about the Norman Conquest or the tribes and kingdoms that had preceded it across the British Isles.

I’ve been filling this gap in the last few years with marvelous history and historical fiction by, among others, Annie Whitehead and Helen Hollick. Annie Whitehead’s Alvar the Kingmaker, suspenseful and rich with cultural details, brings us up to the accession of Æthelred the Unready (978-1016). And Æthelred’s second wife, Queen Emma (984-1052), comes alive in Helen Hollick’s engaging The Forever Queen. It is Emma’s son, Edward the Confessor, whose lack of offspring sets the stage for the Norman invasion of 1066 – and it is Emma’s grand nephew, William the Conqueror, who ultimately won the Battle of Hastings, now being turned upside down in fiction.

So I was intrigued a while back as I scrolled through my morning Triberr posts to discover the title 1066 Turned Upside Down, then further thrilled to realize I was familiar with some of its authors. It takes a special talent to make history come alive, and the nine authors who’ve contributed to this work have succeeded marvelously.

The book is organized chronologically and examines nine turning points in the autumn of 1066, any one of which could easily have led to a different outcome. Each chapter creates a compelling narrative of that different outcome and its consequences.

The stories make great reading, and I was struck that they would be an excellent resource for middle school or high school students to soak up the history that hangs by a thread. But they are also delightful reading at any age. The players were already familiar to me though my earlier reading, and I was entertained and intrigued to explore their actions and motivations at each twist of the story.

HEA for Everyone #LGBTQ+ #Romance #Giveaway #IndieAuthor #LoveTriangle

Below, I’m publishing a blog post that was originally scheduled at author Tina Donahue’s Sweet ‘n Sexy Divas blog for this morning. We’re running into some Blogger-related difficulties, so the post isn’t up yet, and I’m running it here so loyal readers can enter the Rafflecopter.

Without further ado, here’s the original post.

Sweet ‘n Sexy Divas Blog Post

Good morning! I’m half of the writing duo Adriana Kraft, and I’ll be with you on the 15th of every month for the coming year. Tina Donahue has invited me to expand the LBGTQ+ offerings here at Sweet ‘n Sexy Divas.

Most of the erotic romance my husband and I co-author features either bisexual women or lesbian women. We write these pairings for two main reasons. As parents of a gay son and grandparents of a non-binary adult, we believe that love is love, and any gender pairing deserves happiness in love. We also write these pairings for their eroticism. Erotic romance readers (of whatever gender) are seeking fantasies that expand their horizons and amp up the voltage of arousal.

In particular, just as women have been flocking to stories of hot male bodies in gay romances, men often fantasize about being with two women, or seeing two women together. Since my husband and I write as a married cisgender couple, we like to write stories that might appeal to both halves of other couples like us.

There are a wide range of LBGTQ+ pairings and combinations that we do not currently write, so some months I’ll be featuring other authors whose works I’ve read and liked. This will bring us gay male romance (by both female and male authors) and transgendered romance, among others. The “Q+” designation includes a great variety of orientations and combinations that don’t necessarily have much in common other than that they depart from what so long was considered “normal.” Through the range of books and issues we showcase each month, we hope to contribute to normalizing love across the entire spectrum of the LGBTQ+ rainbow.

Be sure to stop by in a month, on November 15th, when we’ll hear from multi-award-winning author Rick R. Reed. He’ll share with us about his latest release, The Impossible Childhood of My Desires.

This month I’m highlighting one of our own favorites. The Reunion, released in 2014, was the winner of that year’s Bi Writers Association Book Award for Bisexual Erotic Fiction. Across the LGBTQ+ books we’ve written, we explore many of the possible Happily Ever Afters sought by bisexual women. For some, happiness is a monogamous relationship with one partner, of either gender. Others find partners with whom they can have an open relationship, often called ethical consensual non-monogamy. Committed polyamory is a third option, and it’s the one featured in The Reunion.

Be sure to scroll to the Rafflecopter contest at the end of this post and enter for your chance to win a copy of The Reunion!

BLURB

A dark and brooding bad boy,

his petite Latina lover,

and his unattainable former high school crush ~

a sizzling, combustible threesome.

Dark and brooding, Adam Granger was always the bad boy out of reach—but now he’s in Sarah Atkinson’s bed, the morning after their twentieth high school reunion. When Adam beats a retreat to his Pacific Palisades estate, former good girl Sarah throws caution to the wind and pursues him.

Petite copper-skinned Maria Ramirez greets Sarah at Adam’s front door. The former exotic dancer doesn’t challenge Sarah’s assumption she’s the maid—how long will it take the dark-haired beauty to figure out Maria is Adam’s live-in lover? Better yet, how long before Maria can entice her into their bed?

Determined not to rock his hard-won lifestyle, Adam resolves to push Sarah past her sexual limits so she’ll leave. When she stays, he watches helplessly as the two women fall in love with each other. Will they shut him out? And, if they let him in, what must he sacrifice?

EXCERPT

Maria opened Adam’s office door quietly and entered, bringing him a second cup of coffee. She placed it on his desk. “Are you okay?”

Heaving his shoulders and avoiding direct eye contact, he nodded. “Sure, why not?”

“I could think of a few reasons.”

His gaze settled on hers.

She witnessed pain before he was able to hide it.

“How was she?”

“Succulent.” Maria wasn’t going to lie. “You know, like when you take the first bite of lobster soaked in butter. It is so scrumptious you’re not sure you dare take a second bite for fear it will disappoint. That’s Sarah.”

A flash of emotion flickered across Adam’s face before he muttered, “I know. But you took a chance and went back for more. So will you take her from me?”

Startled, Maria chose her words carefully. “You’ve done little to hold onto her, if that’s what you want.”

“I took her slow,” he said, defensively.

“Right. Even then you threw it back in her face by leaving her bed.”

The mind of the villain #TBT #Samhain #RomanticSuspense #KU

For Throwback Thursday, here’s another peek into the mind of our villain. We won’t give away what he’s planning – we’ll just say he’s very steeped in the pagan calendar and its rituals…

His lips curled. He wondered if the goddess was good at waiting. He was; his gift, like a good wine, could not be rushed. Everything had a purpose and a time. His was to give to the goddess. Hers was to receive his gift.

Coming in December – A Reluctant Santa #MFRWSteam #eroticromance @ExtasyBooks

Welcome to Steam Hop, a monthly offering by members of Marketing For Romance Writers for readers who like their scenes hot and spicy. Click on the links at the end to travel to other Steam Hop posts, and enjoy!

Today’s excerpt is from our forthcoming Holiday short story, A Reluctant Santa.

Is it ever too late to find happiness?

BLURB

They’re in their fifties. Grief-stricken (her) and battle scarred (him) from their previous loves, they don’t want to risk more heartbreak, ever. They’ll have to take it slow, talk it through, test the waters carefully. Can they make it happen at this speed, get it done in a short story, and reap the benefits of sizzling sex at their age? Why not?

EXCERPT

Set Up: Cliff and Carol finally shared a kiss at the end of their last date. Now, after a light supper, they’re in Carol’s living room with the Christmas tree lights on and a fire in the fireplace. Carol has just gone to get their wine…

Cliff’s eyebrows shot up as Carol reentered the living room. “Wow. The Christmas tree no longer overwhelms the room.”

“I thought you might prefer me in this outfit.” She blushed a bit as she set down the wine glasses.

He saw the rise of her breasts through the tasteful gown as she bent forward—she probably held that pose slightly longer than needed. His arousal was instantaneous. “You look like an Egyptian goddess. Lovely.” He laughed. “Though the slippers are over the top. Rudolph slippers with red noses.”

She stuck out her chin as if daring him. “I didn’t want to appear too sexy. One of Santa’s helpers might have helped himself to hidden gifts.”

Santa’s helpers? He blanched. “So Rudolph is your protection?”

“If need be.” She sat next to him and nestled in close.

He draped an arm around her shoulder, careful not to let his hand drop to a breast. In due time.

“So do you have Christmas traditions?” she asked.

“Not really. Not since my parents died. I used to go home for Christmas. Now I sort of hang around places where I can watch other people enjoy the season. I’m not a Scrooge, but it’s not the easiest of times. When my ex left me, it was a Christmas Eve. At the time I was devastated. Looking back on it, it was one of the best Christmas gifts I ever received.”

“That’s sad. Christmas Eve. That’s mean—beyond mean, really.”

“Yes, well. As the Dickens Christmas Carol puts it, that’s Christmas Past. This is Christmas Present, sharing it with you.”

“And who knows what Christmas Future holds.”

“That is definitely an unknown. No crystal ball here.” Cliff brushed his lips through her hair. He lowered his hand to cup a breast. “This is what the present holds, and that makes me a very lucky, happy man.”

His fingers curled around her breast, lightly grazing her pebbled nipple.

* * * *

Carol swallowed. This was really happening. Of course it’s happening. She’d planned it to, but they might not make it to the bedroom after all. She moaned softly and faced Cliff to meet his lips. They sealed on hers as if they had never parted. She turned further to embrace him, hugging him tight.

His fingers left her breast, only to work on the buttons of her gown. He had them undone quickly and leaned back to take her in, his eyes glowing with appreciation.

She smiled softly.

“You are gorgeous. I’ve wanted to see you like this since our first lunch.”

“Hmm. Let me see you.” Carol reached for his belt. “You seem very overdressed at the moment.”

You can tell where this is headed… For the real steam, watch for the release of A Reluctant Santa sometime in December, at Extasy Books. Better yet, follow me on any of these links so you won’t miss the announcement!

The Shape of Heat I: Awakening By Lil DeVille #menage #m/m #m/f/f #BDSM #spanking #first time

Blurb

Candi knew hot things happened behind closed doors at the Pearl Beach Resort. After all, the place was owned by bisexual billionaire playboy Boris van Donk, who had a reputation for taking on all comers.

Candi’s family of origin was strictly religious, and she has never given or received more than a chaste kiss in her 21 years. Between bad-boy Boris and her geeky, fun-loving, porn-writing housemates, an awakening of her desires is inevitable.

Erotic Romance (Five Flames)

Excerpt

“So, I’ve got a question for you guys, and please don’t be mad at me,” Candi said softly, looking at her feet.

“Did Parsley leave the empty milk carton in the fridge again?” Luisa teased, putting her arm around Candi’s shoulders. “C’mon, Baby, you can ask anything, no fears.”

“I kinda think I know what you might be fixin’ to ask, but I wanna hear it in your own words,” Parsifal prompted, tickling Candi’s feet with a grass frond.

“Quit it, Parsley!” Candi demanded through giggles. “Look, all I want to know is, are you guys, you know, together?”

“Why do you think we’re together?” Parsifal inquired. “You know me, Girl. I go for male tail, and I ain’t ready to settle on one kind of dick just yet.”

“I know you usually go for guys, but you also say you’re open to experiences with ladies. Anyway, sometimes when I come out of my room to get a drink or go pee, you guys are both in one of your rooms with the door closed, and I hear all this moaning and groaning and giggling. Even though my family is super religious, I’m not a prude. It’s okay if you’re together.”

Luisa and Parsifal burst out laughing. Luisa put an arm around Candi’s shoulders while Parsifal put an arm around her waist.

“Oh, Mija!” Luisa giggled. “Me and Parsley are partners in smut. We write porn together.”

“Wait…porn?”

“Yeah, Baby. You know, people fucking on film,” Parsifal said cheekily, raising his eyebrows repeatedly.

“I know what porn is,” Candi protested, punching Parsifal’s arm. “Why did you think you had to keep that a secret from me?”

“Mostly we thought you’d think we were dorks,” Luisa said. “The whole thing started as a joke. One night when you was at work and we was home, we was drinkin’ a little and we started watching porn for a laugh.”

“Most so-called adult entertainment is just soooo bad,” Parsifal groaned, rolling his eyes. “It’s the same old crap. They don’t even try to make a worthwhile story. But then we found the website for Climax Studios, and their movies are so much fun! They have real stories, like detective or fantasy or sci-fi or westerns. It’s like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars or Law and Order or Bonanza, but with real fucking. I never pay for porn, but we totally paid for premium access to the Climax site.”

“For real, these are movies you want to watch all the way through, not like with most porn where once you get off you turn the movie off,” Luisa agreed. “Then Parsley saw that they was open for script submissions.”

“Yeah, and I’ve been writing dirty stories for, like, forever,” Parsifal said. “So, I said, let’s write a script and submit it.”

“So, we started trying to think of sexy stories we could write,” Luisa continued. “We was kind of blocked at first, but then we realized we had the world’s greatest erotica inspiration right here at Pearl Beach Resort—our very own Fucking Dutchman!”

“Ooh, ooh, speak of the devil!” Parsifal proclaimed enthusiastically. “Bad Boy Boris is heading for The Sex Boat right now with that smokin’ hot new bar manager, Valentyn what’s-his-cock.”

“The Ukrainian pretty boy?” Luisa inquired. “Mm, I wouldn’t mind letting him check my lube levels with his dipstick!”

“You guys!” Candi admonished, blushing and giggling. “I think you’re right, though. There’s plenty of stories about Mr. Boris’ overactive sex drive to inspire porn plots.”

On My #Bookshelf: Lilac Girls, by Martha Hall Kelly #WWII #TrueStory #HistoricalNovel #Review

I was a very young teenager when my mother took me to see the documentary movie Mein Kampf. I’ve never been able to erase those visuals, black and white photographs of concentration camp victims. That was my mother’s point: We must never forget.

Perhaps for that reason, though I choose to read a lot of history and historical novels, I’m never thrilled to encounter Nazi horror up close on the pages I’m reading. I don’t wish to experience it again.

I picked up Lilac Girls on the recommendation of a good friend.

I made it through the early segments – the invasion of Poland, Caroline Ferriday’s work with refugees in New York City, the early violence against Jews in Germany. I set the book down when the narrative placed the German female doctor – Herta Oberheuser – in Ravensbrück. I didn’t want to go there.

When I told my friend, she said to keep reading, that it would be worth it.

And it was. Through the horror, in spite of the appalling devastation and loss, this is a story about redemption. And it is a true story, fleshed out with the author’s narrative of the main characters’ internal thoughts and reactions.

Through tracing the actions (and probable thoughts) of real characters New York socialite Caroline Ferriday and Herta Oberheuser, then weaving them with the narrative of the fictional polish teenager Kasia Kuzmerick, the author plunges us into the horror of the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp for Women.

Fast forward the narrative to the mid-fifties, after the war is over. I was unaware this story was real until I began to read about the role of Norman Cousins, editor of The Saturday Review. My family subscribed to that magazine, and through my early adulthood, I did, as well.

At that point I set down the book again and began chasing links online – yes, true story, impacted by people I “knew,” though not personally. Caroline Ferriday enlisted the help of Norman Cousins and his platform to raise funds to bring thirty five of the Ravensbrück survivors to the US for whatever corrective surgery was possible. In so doing, she was continuing a family legacy of political and charitable activism. Since the publication of Lilac Girls, author Martha Hall Kelly has released two additional books, chronicling the role of Caroline Ferriday’s ancestors during WWI (Lost Roses) and the Civil War (Sunflower Sisters). I highly recommend all three books.

Hesper

It was not my Felix Morlan lying in the hospital bed, tangled in the sterile white sheets. He was the bravest, funniest, most cheerful man I knew, strong enough to make up for it when his friends were weak, and this wasn’t him. I brushed his dark hair away from his forehead, which was glistening with sweat, pain hazing over his eyes.

“Sorry I scared you, Hes.” His voice cracked, and I handed him a Styrofoam cup filled with cold water and ice chips.

“I’m just glad you’re…”

Okay? Of course he wasn’t okay. One of his teammates had shown me a replay of the hit that had hyperextended his knee and destroyed his ACL. It had been on mute, and Felix was wearing a helmet that obscured part of his face, but the contorted expression of agony was seared into my memory. He may or may not have blacked out from the pain; I wasn’t sure because I quit watching, unable to stomach it.

“Want me to call the nurse?” I asked tentatively.

He turned his head away, but not before I caught the shine of tears gathering in his eyes. His leg was wrapped heavily in dressings, but I’d seen it when he came out of surgery, exhausted but too frightened to sleep while I waited. The skin around his knee was swollen, an angry red color where staples held the surgical wounds closed. I’d sat by his bed, sketching on the small pad I kept in Calamity, my old Jeep, while he slept off the anesthesia. But he was awake now, and he twisted his calloused hands in the sheets.

“They’ll be keeping me for observation for a few days. Go home and get some rest.”

“Nope.”

“Some of the guys from the team will stop by and—”

“Nope,” I reiterated firmly, crossing my arms.

It was a policy we’d had with each other our whole lives, and it didn’t change even when we’d moved halfway across the country together for college: we had nobody else here, but we had each other. He’d watched my back, and I would watch his. Felix and I had been best friends since we were old enough to walk and talk. Now, his mom was in jail while his dad was busy raising his six younger siblings, and I had run away from Missouri to avoid getting an order of protection against my own father. We’d basically raised each other. I wasn’t running away at the first sign of trouble.

“Show me.” He held out one hand for my sketch pad and I clutched it to my chest. “Come on.”

Normally this was fine. I’d draw tables covered in leaves, teacups and books and pocket watches and chunks of amethyst and rusty old keys, the kind of things I found aesthetically soothing. But I’d been doing something different while he slept, trying to erase the memory of his pain in the video replay of his injury. I’d drawn the slightly blocky angle of his jaw, his mouth turned up in half a smile, a five-o’clock shadow dusting the sides of his face. I’d drawn him happy, my best copy of the way he looked in my favorite memory of him.

I contemplated crumpling the page before he could see it.

Instead, I flipped back to an earlier page where I’d been doing a study of the trees outside his hospital window, light filtering through them in an orange haze as the sun rose. I hadn’t been able to quite capture it with the small bag of pencils I had on hand, but it was enough that he got the idea.

“Remind me again why you aren’t going into this?” He sounded clearer than he had in several hours, his eyes focused on my sketch pad. It was an uncomfortable feeling, to see someone marvel at my work. Like being under a microscope.

“No steady paycheck,” I reminded him, counting the reasons I’d rehearsed to people a hundred thousand times off on my fingers. “Deadlines would push me to create when I didn’t feel like it. I would grow to hate it if I had to do it for a living. The pressure would be too intense.”

I didn’t list the other reason. Sometimes it took every ounce of energy I possessed just to get up in the morning. Sometimes I simply didn’t have enough inside me to both function and create. Art was my escape. If I turned it into another source of stress, where would I hide when the rest of the world got to be too much? What would I do to restore the balance?

“Those are all good reasons,” he agreed begrudgingly, and he reached back over to hand the pad back to me, twisting slightly to do so.

He didn’t say a word but the set of his mouth and eyebrows told me he’d moved wrong, in a way that would have left him screaming if he hadn’t been so heavily medicated. My chest hurt, my lungs burning because I just couldn’t get enough oxygen in, because I couldn’t breathe looking at the way my best friend suffered. This was the sort of thing you read about in the paper or heard about on the news. It happened to other people, sure. But it wasn’t supposed to happen to Felix.

#TBT – The mind of the villain… #Samhain #RomanticSuspense #MFRWAuthor #IARTG #KindleCountdown

Samhain. Ancient Celtic/Pagan festival.

Do you like Celtic myths and rituals? Both of us have Celtic ancestry, so we delved pretty deeply into that tradition when we were writing this book. Also, we’re both former professors, so it was pretty easy for us (well, me!) to fall in love with our Anthropology Professor hero, Matt Bayfield. Our undercover lady cop (don’t forget, Mr. Kraft is a criminologist) had a harder time with that than we did – since the campus attacks often seem timed just after the prof’s Celtic lectures, she had to check out whether he might be the perp. That much of the story we feel fine giving away – we hope you’ll pick it up on sale to find out more.

Only two more days at $1.99, then Saturday it goes back up to $3.99.

For TBT all month, we’re featuring a peek into the mind of the villain…

Here’s today’s:

He watched the red Jeep Cherokee pull out and turn north toward campus. He ran his tongue across his lips. She’d been a stunning beauty, dressed to attract. More mature than most of the co-eds that frequented the bar. He preferred black hair, but auburn would do. She had the curves to be a worthy goddess. As with the others, he’d collect more evidence to be certain she qualified, but he had little doubt that she would.

BLURB

Whose mask will crumble first—

the undercover cop masquerading as a co-ed,
or the campus stalker,

Is anthropology professor Matt Bayfield the Blackthorn College rapist, or a potential ally? Aloof and unapproachable, Matt has academic ambitions. He can’t escape Blackthorn College soon enough, and he doesn’t want any entanglements to slow down his exit.

Nancy Appleby would like nothing more than to solve the string of campus rape cases before Thanksgiving so she can go home. The last thing she wants is a relationship to complicate her life—but she’ll settle for a fling, especially when the sex sizzles.

The stalker has his own carefully crafted timetable, with a special date just for Nancy. Can Matt and Nancy force him out of his hidey-hole before it’s too late?

EXCERPT

Who will be the next victim?

Nancy Appleby scanned the co-eds in the small lecture hall. Each could be his next prey. Each looked much younger than she remembered being as a full-time student. Each woman hung on Professor Bayfield’s well crafted words.

Was it the topic, Celtic Myths and Rituals, or was it the aloofness of the tall, dark-haired lecturer with the strong protruding chin that mesmerized? He did command attention. Although his tone was mild, Bayfield played with his audience like a polished actor. Clearly he was in control. Though he gestured but rarely, he moved like an athlete, comfortable in his body.

Nancy jotted notes on a yellow pad pretending to be no different than anyone else in the room. She glanced up at Bayfield, whose eyes had settled on her; they were piercing and inquisitive. Then he shifted his gaze, but he’d noticed her, was thinking about her. Why? She’d done everything she could to blend in. He hadn’t seemed particularly troubled by her presence, just curious.

#TBT – Are you ready for Halloween? #Samhain #RomanticSuspense #MFRWAuthor #IARTG #IndieAuthor

Samhain. Ancient Celtic/Pagan festival.

Of course when our neighborhood went Trick-or-Treating in my childhood, I knew nothing about this heritage. It was just fun – and our group never played any tricks on anyone in any case, though often the next day at school we’d hear about some who did.

All in fun. The roots of Samhain, however, are darker. For the next five Throw-Back-Thursdays, we’ll be featuring a peek into the mind of the villain of The Unmasking, our suspense-filled romance that draws on this heritage.

Here’s a first glimpse into the villain’s mind:

Who will be the next goddess?

Images flickered across the large screen TV. The dark-haired woman had her back to him. She’d shut off the shower and was toweling herself vigorously.

“Very nice,” the man muttered, tugging the brown robe tighter about his torso.

BLURB

Whose mask will crumble first—
the enigmatic professor of Celtic Studies,
the undercover cop masquerading as a co-ed,
or the campus stalker,
