“Don’t get your hopes up about what I can do,” Meg responded. “I’m no Houdini. I’ve been able to help couples discover what they wanted who maybe didn’t recognize it before. Maybe a little more than that. But I don’t work miracles. In the end, partners have to work out matters for themselves.”

Lisa dropped her gaze, and Meg could see more tears streak down her face.

“Don’t look so dismayed. I didn’t say I wouldn’t try to help. We’ll put our heads together and see what’s possible.” Meg paused. “You do know, though, it’s at least possible that when Bryce learns you’re bi, he’ll walk away? I certainly don’t understand why, but that is a possibility.”

“That’s why I’m stymied. But Christmas is coming soon. I can’t wait much longer. I’ve got to find a way and let whatever happens happen.”

“But you have to tell him. Right?”

Looking back at Meg, Lisa nodded slowly. “He’ll wonder why I waited so long.”

“That can’t be helped. Now is now. How are you going to take what apparently will be a leap of faith?”

“I don’t know. I thought maybe you could help—that you might think of something I haven’t yet. I’ve thought of simply blurting it out in the middle of lovemaking. Maybe he’d like another woman to join us. I’ve thought of writing a letter, but that seems too clinical and detached. I keep wringing my hands over this, but I can’t get the words out.”

“I take it you’re not ready to give up women.”

Lisa wet her lips. “I’ve thought about it. I can’t do it. I’m bi. I like women as well as men. That’s the way it is. I’m sure there are plenty of bi women who set aside their desire for the touch of a woman to be with a man. I don’t think I can do it. That wouldn’t be me. If I tried and failed, that would be worse than what I’m facing now.”

“And you don’t think Bryce has ever suspected? He’s seen us together…well, I don’t mean really together…but we are fairly touchy-feely, even around him.”

“That’s how he sees me, touchy-feely.” She let out a deep sigh. “I’ve given this a lot of thought. I wouldn’t need another man in my life if I had Bryce, but that’s still not the same. I don’t want to be unfaithful to my wedding vows…but I can’t see a life without being intimate with a woman, at least now and then. Like us. Dammit. What we just shared in my bedroom is extremely special to me, and it’s more than raw sex.”

“And to me,” Meg interjected. “But I wouldn’t want to cause problems in your marriage. By the way, wedding vows can be written to reflect whatever you and whoever you marry agree to commit to. There’s nothing magical in those words. Magic, as you and I know very well from the theater world, lies in the heart.”

“I know. I know. Maybe that’s the crux of the matter. My heart knows the magic of two women being together as well as the magic of a woman and a man. I don’t want to lose either.”

Set-up: Derek has just returned to his and April’s suite after a solitary lunch and a couple beers…

Derek strolled into the sitting area and plopped down on the couch. He flipped on a lamp and picked up a magazine when a noise from the bed alerted him that he was not alone.
He blinked, adjusting his eyes to the dim light and to the surreal scene. Two masked women knelt on the bed facing each other with their heads turned toward him. The gauzy curtain separated them from him, but he could tell that one was a blonde and the other had auburn hair. They wore equally transparent gowns. He stared hard but couldn’t decide whether they were actually wearing masks or if they’d painted their faces. Each woman thrust her tongue out at him as if beckoning him to join them.
Derek sat rigidly on the couch. He wasn’t about to join this game. He wet his lips. Had his body been planted in cement? He couldn’t move a muscle to leave.
“Glad you got back in time for the main act.”
Derek swallowed hard at Meg’s taunt. They were hardly trying to conceal their identities. Had they actually waited for him? Maybe the actress could only perform in front of an audience.
“You can join us if you want,” April said.

“This is so stunningly beautiful,” April said for the umpteenth time. She rested her chin on her knees and stared out at the small bay. “The water is so blue. How did you find such an isolated spot? The ridge of rock forms its own private cove.”

“We spent most of a day exploring on an earlier cruise,” Meg responded. “This is farther than most cruise passengers are going to walk, but there are so many resorts in the area I doubt this place is as isolated as it appears.”

“The only people I’ve seen since we got here are the people on that boat out there.” April inhaled. “So carefree. The girls on the boat didn’t seem dismayed to see us walk down the beach.”

Derek chuckled. “When two women stand and wave without bothering to put on their bikini tops, I’d agree they aren’t too bothered by our presence. Their guys didn’t seem quite so eager.”

“Anyone want to take bets on how long before the bikini bottoms come off?”

April looked quickly at Clark. “They wouldn’t.”

“Modesty is not a necessarily a virtue out here.” Clark shrugged. “Maybe these girls will wait until dusk.”

“I wouldn’t count on that,” Meg interjected. “They’re not looking for privacy. They have what they want—anonymity. They can do whatever they want. They’re on the stage, and we are their audience.” She brushed the back of a warm hand along April’s shoulder. “Until we become the stage.”

Slamming the door behind him, Jonathan leaned his back against it. In short, hard gasps, he took deep breaths, not realizing he’d been holding onto it until then. Thankfully, the feeling of oppression faded and Jonathan began to relax. He stood there by the door for some time, listening for someone, or something, moving outside. When he heard nothing, he let out a sigh of relief and began to step away. He yelped when he caught sight of a movement, but when he saw his reflection staring back at him, he closed his eyes and let out a sigh to the ceiling. A wet and cold touch caressed the length of his neck.

“Jonathan.”

Jonathan opened his eyes, paralyzed as he watched himself in the mirror. His heart raced faster than before, and he couldn’t breathe. At the same time, the feeling of impending doom swamped over him. His heart beat rapidly in his throat, the sound, deafening in his ears. He was very sure that a man had spoken his name. Jonathan couldn’t recall feeling that frightened in his life. The shower in the bathroom turned off, and he heard Rafe whistling a tune, but instead of calling out to him, Jonathan continued to stare at his lone reflection, unable to understand how the voice had spoken right next to his ear. If he were to reflect on that touch, he could swear it had been a tongue. When the bathroom door opened behind him made him jump, he turned around, fist drawn up to hit whoever it was that was playing pranks on him. Rafe stood in the doorway, bare except for a damp towel around his waist. Jonathan slowly lowered his fist, fighting his rising urge to run like a coward and schooled his features.

AUTHOR BIO

I am a wife, mother and blogger by day, a writer by night. It can be difficult, to say the least, but it is a challenge that keeps me on my toes.

I grew up listening to folk tales my father and nannies told either to entertain us children or to send home a message. These narratives I kept with me and finally, I wrote them down in a journal way back when I kept one. Going through junk led to a long forgotten box and in it was the journal. Reading the stories of romance, science fiction and horror I had taken time to put to paper, brought to light that these were tales I never met in my readings.

The tales I write are fictional but all of them are based on what I grew up with and still dream about. That they have an M/M twist is simply for my pleasure. And I hope, yours as well.

“So you’re a fireman?” Meg asked.

“That’s right.” Derek cocked his head to the side, obviously trying to keep up with Meg, who seemed quite nonchalant about what had just transpired beneath the table.

“So you’ve saved more than one damsel in distress?”

“Probably.”

“So if your wife starts a fire in me that only you can put out, are you going to leave me hanging?”

Derek shook his head and April saw a grin work across his lips. “I wish I knew.”

Meg pouted. “If I need you, if I really need you, I will most definitely be counting on you. If you don’t want to face that possibility, then you and your wife had better come to an understanding this evening. Because things are likely going to get much more serious tomorrow if you don’t back out very soon.”

“We’re not backing out,” April retorted, finding her breath.

“We’ll see,” Meg purred. She reached over and tapped Derek’s arm. “Why don’t you take your wife back to your suite and see how well you can convince her?” She winked. “If it helps, April, you might imagine Derek fucking me silly and me howling into the night. If you hear the wind come up outside your berth, just imagine that’s me thrashing under the weight of a lover.” She leaned back in her chair and looked admiringly at Derek. “You do look like a solid fellow, but I guarantee I can handle your weight, and anything else you might want to give me.”

Derek’s jaw fell ajar. He looked about to speak, but Meg was getting to her feet. She grabbed Clark by the hand and headed out of the lounge. Neither one of them looked back.

April glanced quickly at Derek. “You okay?”

“I’ll survive. Though given the looks of you, you must be doing a little better. That was quite a show the two of you put on.”

“Enough to get you revved up?”

“The sooner we get back to the suite, the sooner I can answer that question.”

Meg waited until Derek was out of earshot, then directed her attention to the eager, bubbly blonde. “I don’t usually get involved with married couples. Unless I got them together in the first place.”

April’s smile broadened. “I knew I was right about you. Derek thought I was crazy.”

“I like women and guys, if that’s what you mean. But as I said, I don’t usually get involved with married couples. So what are you looking for? A little diversion?”

April winced. “More than that. Not a long-term relationship—I have that with Derek.” Her fingers curled around a napkin, showing the first sign of tension. “We’ve lost the sexual spark that used to be so important to both of us.”

“Ah. That explains a lot.” Meg glanced toward the exit. “So you’re much more interested in rediscovering this spark than your husband is?”

April shrugged. “I don’t think he knows how to go about finding it. He refuses everything I come up with.”

“But you convinced him to come on this cruise?”

Nodding, April said, “It wasn’t an easy sell. I guess he finally bought the idea that it would be easier to have an adventure onboard a ship than in Chicago. Less dangerous in the long run.”

“Possibly. So why did you pick me out of all the women who are looking for action, much like you? This is my third cruise. You and your husband aren’t as unusual as you might think.”

“You’ve helped others on cruises?”

“I didn’t say that.” She paused. “I’ve had my hands rather full with Clark. But I must admit you’re the first person to approach me so directly. You’re not into a lot of games. I like that.”

Derek reached for his coffee cup and hesitated. “And I’m supposed to believe this seven-year itch thing will be worked through on this cruise. No roving eyes when we get back to Chicago?”

April shook her head. “Hopefully I’ll have a re-energized husband by then.”

“I’m not the energizer bunny,” Derek said, looking glum and resigned.

“I’ve noticed. Come on, this is about both of us. Let’s enjoy our cruise. There was a time when you couldn’t get enough of me. Wouldn’t you like to have those days back?”

Looking trapped, Derek nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. I would, but this doesn’t seem like the way to do that.”

“I think it is.” April swallowed. “This isn’t just about you, Derek. I have to find my spark again. We’ve both allowed the sex part of our marriage to fizzle. I no longer believe you and I can find it on our own. I think another woman can help us both—at least, the right woman.”

“And you think Meg the actress is that woman?”

“She’s worth a shot. You know I’m not threatening divorce. But I’m not willing to give up on our sex lives just because I’m about to turn thirty, either. I don’t expect to ever have to give up on sex, but that means we have to do some things to give it some new life.”

“You read too many romance novels.”

“Maybe.” She dragged a fingernail along his wrist. “But I’m not ready to give up on us. Now I’m going over there and introducing myself.”

His eyebrows shot up.

“You can watch, if that suits you better.”

Meg’s laughter was high-pitched. “You think. From the feel of her panties, I’d say she’s already creaming. Aren’t you, April?”

He shook his head. “And I love you, but that doesn’t mean I understand you. You always said you got women out of your system during your college days.”

April felt her cheeks warm slightly. “I thought I did.” She frowned. “You know there hasn’t been anyone since you and I were engaged.” She smiled faintly. “And I got one of the hunkiest guys in the fire department, and a six-year-old daughter I wouldn’t trade for the world.”

“But…”

“But we’ve grown stale. We keep going over old ground. And I’m tired of being taken for granted.”

“You’re not―”

“Hush. We get Sammy set up with her Saturday morning cartoons and then have something that passes in your book as sex.” Her voice rose. “If that’s not being taken for granted, if that’s not being in a rut, I don’t know what is. And I’m going to do something about it.”

“By fucking whoever you can entice to our suite.”
