Sexy from the back row… #MSS175 #MySexySaturday #MFRWAuthor

Welcome to My Sexy Saturday Week 175, where authors tease you with seven sentences or paragraphs from their sexy stories!

This week’s theme is “Sexy About Town—perhaps at your local cafe, the gym, where you work…what if you’re a professor, and she turns up in your lecture hall?

Whose mask will crumble first—

the enigmatic professor of Celtic Studies,

the undercover cop masquerading as a co-ed,

or the campus stalker, biding his time to strike again?

Romantic Suspense

Four flames   Explicit sex: m/f

EXCERPT

So who was the mystery woman? Matt Bayfield gathered his notes and glanced toward the newcomer standing in the rear of the lecture hall. He’d been offering this lecture series for nearly a year, roughly every six weeks. This fall, only three freshmen had inquired about last year’s handouts. The dark-haired female in the back wasn’t one of them.

Odd that she’d sit in the last row, because most women, especially those as comely as the co-ed with full lips and watchful eyes, wanted to sit up front to impress him—as if he were looking. He didn’t expect to be hanging around Trillium, Minnesota long enough to develop any romantic interests. And he had an ironclad rule against such liaisons with students.

Nonetheless, the woman in the bulky gray sweater and black slacks didn’t fit. Matt prided himself on having honed some keen observation skills in his fieldwork as a sociologist. The other students chattered with one another. The interloper remained silent and observant, almost aloof.

Bayfield recoiled. Aloof—that was what Carol Macy accused him of being. He’d found it ironic that it was his lesbian colleague who seemed most concerned about his lack of romantic relationships. Her periodic nagging was an irritant he chose to put up with because he counted Carol as his best friend at Blackthorn College—one of few.

He shrugged into a tweed sports jacket. Snapping his briefcase closed, he looked up into two of the most calculating gray eyes he’d ever encountered. They belonged to the woman from the back row.

New Release from Daryl Devoré! #erotic, #contemporary, #romance #MFRWAuthor @DarylDevore

Today we’re thrilled to welcome Daryl Devoré, here to celebrate her first release at Extasy Books!

Only read this book if you like humour and heat mixed with suspense!

Daryl Devoré’s What Happens in Bangkok

Friday January 27th was a monumental day. It possibly should have been a holiday. Why? My latest erotic romance – What Happens in Bangkok – was finally released.
Finally???
This is what this poor book went through just to get to see the light of day.
I hadn’t planned on writing a book. I was going down to visit my daughter – a very long drive from Ontario, Canada to North Carolina. Inspiration smacked me in the back of the head; I grabbed my laptop and wrote 3 chapters.
Couldn’t think of a title – nicknamed it Book With No Name.
In the following weeks, writing the chapters just flew by – then I hit a wall. A really big brick wall. Ouch! Not literally hit – figuratively hit. I couldn’t write the next chapter. My mine was a total blank – like I’d used up all my words.
I put the book away. Two more books got written and published. Trying to break the block, I’d edit the first chapters of the poor book with no name, but no inspiration would come.
One day in yoga class (how much I love yoga is a total other blog post), sitting quietly, meditating, and bam – it hit me. The whole problem laid itself out. I had too much for the one book. Solution – write a sequel.
Once that had been sorted out the rest of the book surged out of my fingertips. Yes, you can have a visual of words leaping from my fingertips – lol.
But no title came to mind. Finally put it out my writer’s group, and a fabulous title was suggested. Love you, Jenna J
Sent book to my fabulous – FABULOUS – cps and beta – did their suggestions and emailed it off to my publisher. Not a good time for him. His reply was underwhelming.
That threw me for a loop because I know this book is good. It’s the best thing I’ve written. (Hello, Steven Spielberg. Are you reading this? Call me!)
Chatted with a friend from a writer’s group and she gave me some wise and valuable advice which I followed. I pulled the book from that publisher and went in search of an agent. I picked 5. Eventually, after a full year, I got rejected by all 5. Sad face.
Again I say – I know this book is good. Those agents just weren’t the right match. Decided to try a publisher. Chose 2. My first choice was based on authors this publisher had in their list. A couple I knew and one I knew of. This is the absolute truth – I looked at the author list and said – If they publish Adriana Kraft then they’re my first choice.
So I took a big breath and submitted. Luck finally struck. They accepted it.
Changing publishers means things are done the same way as I was used to. I have 6 previously published books, but I was making newbie mistakes all over the place. They were sweet and kept telling me it was okay. I’d get the hang of their system.
Down to the last moment- the proofreading. Proofreader gets sick and ends up in the hospital! Release date is delayed. (And I’m still freaking that maybe it was my book that made her sick?!?!?!?)
But January 27th rolled around and it was released. So I am super happy and very proud to introduce – What Happens in Bangkok.

EXCERPT

Erik leaned on the balcony railing and stared down at the crowd of patrons partying in her club. They were laughing, and buying over-priced and watered-down booze, just the way it was supposed to be. The strobe lights bounced off the glitter and tinsel, adding blinding sparkles to the atmosphere. Overhead, four massive disco balls turned, spitting out flashes of light, randomly illuminating either patrons or the leopard print wallpapered walls. And best of all, Bangkok was a half a world away from home, which couldn’t be more perfect.

She’d made it through her second year. She hadn’t expected to jump straight into an owner/managerial position, but the opening was there and she grabbed it. The learning curve had been steep at first, although she now felt like she had her feet on the floor and her head squarely on her shoulders. Life wasn’t perfect, but it was good. She took a deep breath and enjoyed a sense of calmness.

“Hey, Boss Lady.”

She shifted to look at Sebastian, her stage manager. His chest muscles bulged under his white t-shirt, the rips in his jeans hinted at strong thighs, and the ever present headset rested on his scruffy brown hair. He sat on one hip and flipped a hand to point behind him. “It’s just cray cray back there. Shangri-Lay’s havin’ a hissy fit.”

Stifling the urge to pound her forehead on the brass railing, Erik asked, “What’s the little diva’s issue this time?”

“Well, she’s screamin’ somethin’ ’bout Ra-chell took her pink scarf and the new eye shadow that matches it. Ra-chell says she didn’t. She bought ’em this afternoon when she was out shoppin’. You know Ra-chell ‘n shoppin’. She gets a paycheck and it’s gone. But no way Shangri-Lay’s gonna believe her. She’s threatenin’ to rip out her hair extensions.”

Erik placed her palms on the cool railing and pushed upright. “Lead on.”

She followed the harassed stage manager through the club, the pounding bass drowning out anything more he might have said to her. In the evening gown laden, makeup strewn topsy-turviness of the dressing room chaos ruled. Two partially dressed people rolled on the floor, entangled in each other’s arms and legs, with fingers gripping hair and voices screeching. The other performers stood by and watched, cheering their favorite.

Erik grabbed a nearby glass, tossed the contents in the sink and filled it with cold water. She pushed her way through the crowd and flung the contents on the fighters.

“Ah! My makeup.”

“You bitch!”

“Excuse me?” Erik lifted an eyebrow.

BLURB

To save Darien’s life his brother asks, “Can you walk in high heels?”

Erika Bailey, owner/manager of a drag queen club in Bangkok, Thailand has happily settled into all aspects of her new life, except for her lack of a love life. When a new diva auditions, Erika is bewildered over her instant attraction to the blond God, Apollo. Darien Scott is on vacation after a world tour and mistakenly figures the safest place to be is at The Black Dragon with the head of a Triad. When the club is hit, Darien is the only person to get out alive. Now he’s running from the police and a Triad. Mistake number 1.

Disguised as a drag queen, he’s hired by Erika, but falls hard for his new boss, then struggles with not coming clean with her. Mistake number 2.

Can he fix his mistakes and find a life filled with love or is he headed straight for mistake number 3?

Midweek Tease ~ Waking up a Man… #MFRWAuthor #MWTease

Welcome to Midweek Tease, hosted by Angelica Dawson!

In anticipation of our upcoming romantic suspense release this March, here’s another snippet from our romantic suspense, The Heist. Kara’s attending a conference in Chicago…

A heist? A murder? It’s villain’s choice.

EXCERPT

“I’m afraid I already have a dinner commitment. I’m on a conference committee,” Kara explained. “If you come by my hotel around nine o’clock, you could help tuck me in for the night.”

“I see,” Ted responded. “And do I get to stay an hour, or will you require more of my services than that?”

“No need to get pissy about it,” she snapped. “We can always wait until the next night if you prefer. I don’t have any dinner plans then. As for time limits—you can stay the night if you want. We might even have time for breakfast in bed. But I have to be at a meeting by eight thirty. Does any of this work for you?”

“I’ll make it work. I’m a little surprised I get to stay the night.”

“By the time I’m done with you, I doubt you’ll have the strength to crawl out of the hotel. And that way we get to enjoy waking each other up in the morning.”

“Maybe you won’t want to be around me early in the morning. I’m told I can be a bear.”

“Maybe I’m better at waking up a man than your other women are.”

Sexy Suspense #MySexySaturday #MFRWAuthor

We’re getting excited for our next romantic suspense, scheduled for release in mid March. Romantic suspense is where we got our start, until an editor’s comment that we write sexual tension well led us to venture into the steamy side with our erotic romance releases. But we’ve never forgotten our roots.

Here’s a taste of our first romantic suspense release – the very first fiction we wrote together!

High stakes, a fiery Irish redhead, her stunning racehorse, and a fiercely loyal rancher

EXCERPT

Shaking her head, Cassie grabbed a hoof pick from her back pocket, lifted one of Hope’s front hooves, and began extracting dirt and pebbles.

“Nice lookin’ filly.”

Cassie groaned at the strange deep voice and the too-familiar line. Couldn’t men anywhere be a little more original?

Dropping the hoof, Cassie glanced across Hope’s back and gasped. The deeply tanned hunk behind the voice had shoulders that stretched taut a pale yellow polo shirt covered, in part, with a thin buckskin vest. The wide cowboy buckle appeared unnecessary to hold up well contoured Levi’s. A sweat-stained brown Stetson, tipped low, cast a light shadow across his facial features. His worn boots were those of a working man. This was no drugstore cowboy.

He stepped closer. She could make out a scowl. Dark eyes snapped a foreboding anger. Raven black hair framed chiseled features, searing them into Cassie’s brain. Her toes curled involuntarily. She rubbed Hope’s coat vigorously. Who the hell was he? And to top it off, he didn’t even seem to notice her. His eyes appraised only the horse.

“Thanks,” she mumbled, ducking down by Hope’s flank.

The handsome stranger walked around the horse. “Very nice,” he drawled at last.

REVIEWS

Five stars at Goodreads and Amazon:

“Extremely well written and very entertaining to read. Real life hopes and dreams becoming a reality. This story really moved me.” Donna H.

“I loved Cassie and Clint. These two stubborn, prideful people remind me of Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett…Cassie’s Hope is the first book of a series. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books” Sheila G.

“I took their journey with them. I felt their pain, their sadness, their struggles, and most of all their love. And that is the mark of a truly good book.” Faith H.

BLURB

What happens when a fiercely loyal widowed half-Ute cowboy meets a fiery redhead with an Irish temper to match? Cassidy O’Hanlon – Cassie, to her friends – has set aside her Chicago career for six months to train racehorses for her dad after his stroke.

Furious the interloper has shipped in a ringer from the Chicago circuit to his Wyoming turf, Rancher/trainer Clint Travers sets out to put her in her place. Sparks fly immediately, but after their rocky start, the two quickly forge a passionate relationship, and he follows her to Chicago.

When it becomes clear someone is drugging Cassie’s horse, Clint sets out to solve the mystery, but storms off in a cloud of wounded pride when suspicions turn to him.

Can love trump pride?

Heat sizzles when Ted and Kara collide—can they work together, before it’s too late?

SETUP

Ted’s been called in to solve a break-in at the small-town museum where Kara is curator. He’s bumped into Kara once before, very pleasantly so, from his perspective – she’s more ambivalent. They’re in her office discussing next steps…

EXCERPT

Ted exhaled slowly. “And do you think I’ll ever get to know you?”
Kara giggled softly. “Not in the way you’re thinking.” She thrust out her chin. “At least not while you’re working this case.”
He took his time to chew on that information. “Fair enough,” he said. He wished he knew what he done or said to disarm her. Maybe it had been the memory of their brief encounter. “Not that I need more incentive to wrap this museum situation up quickly.” He paused. “Do you suppose we’ll be able to hug now and then like friends, now that we’ve cleared the air? Shaking hands seems so stodgy.”
Kara laughed quickly and then peeked over at him with a devastating smile. “As long as you don’t paw my boobs.”
Smiling, he didn’t miss a beat. “How about your rear?”
She arched an eyebrow at him. “That is a different matter. Your large hands did leave a pleasant impression on my ass.”
So she didn’t mind a little flirting even while he worked the case. “Good. I believe in first impressions, and I always like to be clear about the rules of the game. Now maybe you should tell me how you think one or more people entered the museum supposedly without a key.”
She scrunched her mouth. “So do you play by the rules?”
“I didn’t say that. I just like to know what they are.”

Slow Dancing #MySexySaturday

Welcome to another round of My Sexy Saturday, where authors offer seven words, sentences, or paragraphs from their work for your entertainment. Be sure to click on the graphic at the bottom of the page and visit the other participants.

This week’s theme is My Sexy New Year, celebrating new beginnings. Having a relationship with a man – any man – is definitely a new beginning for Traci Steele. She has yet to learn that the transition from victim to survivor is a choice within her power to make. We think maybe Scott McCord, with his gentle patient approach, might just be the key to help her make this discovery. Even so, it’s a long journey, with many twists and turns.

EXCERPT

Detour-Ahead-Ebook-web“Do you have any CDs for that CD player over there?” Scott asked.

“Some.”

“Anything slow we could dance to?”

Traci went into the bedroom and rummaged through her CD case. Her fingers felt like five thumbs. Finding what she wanted, she put it in the player, and soft music filled the room.

“Much better,” Scott said, rising from the couch and extending his hands to her.

She kicked off her flats and stepped into his arms. Was she in a trance? He held her close; her breasts nestled against his chest. It felt good. It felt right. Their feet hardly moved. They swayed to the music. There was no hurry.

She wanted to taste and savor the moment. The press of her body against his, his aftershave enticing her senses, his hand resting on her lower backside. Intimate and right. She didn’t want him to let go. Ever.

BLURB

Threatened race horses, city slicker attorney, sexy California wrangler—what can possibly go wrong?

Hot-shot Chicago prosecuting attorney Traci Steele works tirelessly keeping rapists off the street to prevent other women from suffering the hell she’s endured, so she resists her friends’ insistence that she take a two month R&R in their California Live Oak condo—until they persuade her to help their rancher friend as a private investigator.

Though he runs the stables at Live Oak, well-muscled mustached wrangler Scott McCord much prefers working with the race horses he trains at his ranch, and he can’t believe his old friends have sent a greenhorn female to help him with horse troubles.

The improbable dance between this mismatched pair barely fits in around the escalating suspense of whoever’s after Scott’s horses. Traci is as tenacious in her sleuthing as she is terrified about her inability to ever love a man. Can Scott succeed in gentling her – like he does his horses – before she flees in panic?

REVIEWS

Night Owl Reviews Top Pick This is a story about letting go of your past so you can move on to your future. It is a story about letting go of being the victim and becoming a survivor…Add into this touching story of recovery a mystery that will keep you guessing to the very end, and you’ve got a story you won’t be able to put down. You Gotta Read Reviews Rich in romance and suspense, this book had me mesmerized from the first page. Threatened race horses, city slicker attorney, sexy California wrangler—what can possibly go wrong?

EXCERPT

Some of Traci’s lessons come from her sexy wrangler, some from the horses he guides her to work with, and some from her best friend, Cassie Travers:

Traci nodded her head. “Yes, but that’s not all of it. I couldn’t shake the past.”

“Right.” Cassie plopped down on the floor beside Traci. “You were content with remaining the victim.”

Jerking away from her friend, Traci said, “That’s cruel, Cassie. Even from you.”

“I know it is.”

Traci saw the tears welling in Cassie’s eyes. Her troubles were taking a toll on the small redhead and she vowed to hear the woman out. Sitting rigidly on her hands, Traci said, “Okay, spit it out. You’ll bust if you don’t.”

“It’s just that you don’t have to continue being the victim of a rape that happened over a half a lifetime ago.”

“You weren’t there. How do you know?”

New Release ~ The Unmasking

It’s here! The Unmasking is live at Amazon.com!

It’s All About the Research

Authors of erotic romance often get teased about what kind of research they might delve into for the sake of their books – it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it…**snicker, giggle, knowing wink.**

The research my husband and I engaged in for this spicy romantic suspense is a little different – some might say, it’s been our entire lives. We’ve both taught at universities (that’s where we met) and we know the academic life from the inside. The choices and struggles faced by our professorial hero, Anthropologist Matt Bayfield, are more familiar than we might like to admit.

Hubs is a sociologist with a specialty in criminology. I promise he’s drawn on this background immensely in creating our spunky female undercover cop, Nancy Appleby, in plotting the trajectory of the crimes and the mystery of solving them, and especially in understanding our truly creepy villain (who I won’t name, of course – that would spoil everything!).

We’ve both immersed ourselves in understanding Celtic culture and history for years – long before we envisioned this novel. Hubs has Welsh roots, and mine are Scotch-Irish on one side, so we feel an ancestral pull to that era and its understanding of seasons and cycles. It was easy to hand that passion over to our ersatz professor. We won’t say more about how it’s woven into the plot, but we think readers will like it.

We had a close call researching the technology we’ve given our resourceful cop – hubs found himself on a website requesting security clearance for more information. Backed right out of that one! But we found what we needed to know without tripping any more alarms.

The North Woods, where we’ve set the novel? A place we’ve lived and loved, and left, when the winters grew too much for us to handle. But while we lived there, we threw ourselves with a passion into the cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and crisp winter outings Nancy enjoys so much. Writing those scenes was like watching snippets from our own life on the screen.

The Unmasking was originally released in 2008 under a different pen name; rights reverted to us when the contract ran out, and we’ve decided to re-issue it as “ourselves.” We’ve thoroughly re-edited the book and incorporated helpful feedback from our beta readers

Our tag line is Erotic Romance for Two, Three, or More. Most of our published work has focused on the “three or more” side of the equation. We’re happy to offer a book focused on the “two” element, and we think readers will find the sex is no less sizzling. And no, we’re not going to share any research we might have indulged in to write those scenes.

The Unmasking, by Adriana Kraft

BLURB

Whose mask will crumble first—
the enigmatic professor of Celtic Studies,
the undercover cop masquerading as a co-ed,
or the campus stalker,
biding his time to strike again?

Is anthropology professor Matt Bayfield the Blackthorn College rapist, or a potential ally? Aloof and unapproachable, Matt has academic ambitions. He can’t escape Blackthorn College soon enough, and he doesn’t want any entanglements to slow down his exit.

Nancy Appleby would like nothing more than to solve the string of campus rape cases before Thanksgiving so she can go home. The last thing she wants is a relationship to complicate her life—but she’ll settle for a fling, especially when the sex sizzles.

The stalker has his own carefully crafted timetable, with a special date just for Nancy. Can Matt and Nancy force him out of his hidey-hole before it’s too late?

REVIEWS

Four and a half stars at Romance Junkies: From beginning to end, THE UNMASKING is a fascinating tale…I was intrigued at how the writing team is able to intertwine a love story with such horrifying circumstances in startling clarity. One of the many things I adored about this story is that the main characters are flawed. They both make judgment errors and their mistakes and assumptions lead to some emotionally trying scenes that had me eagerly reading to find out how they were going to solve their conflicts – or at several points if they even would be able to remain together. If you enjoy romantic suspense novels then I can definitely recommend THE UNMASKING. Chrissy D.

Five Stars at Amazon: One of the best stories ever written by Adriana Kraft…a truly great read. Could not put it down until I finished it. Amy B.

Five Stars at Goodreads: The suspense is so well done you don’t know who the bad guy is until it’s revealed in the book. The action is fast paced and kept my interest to the very end. Could not put the book down. Donna H.

EXCERPT

Chapter One

Who will be the next victim?

Nancy Appleby scanned the co-eds in the small lecture hall. Each could be his next prey. Each looked much younger than she remembered being as a full-time student. Each woman hung on Professor Bayfield’s well crafted words.

Was it the topic, Celtic Myths and Rituals, or was it the aloofness of the tall, dark-haired lecturer with the strong protruding chin that mesmerized? He did command attention. Although his tone was mild, Bayfield played with his audience like a polished actor. Clearly he was in control. Though he gestured but rarely, he moved like an athlete, comfortable in his body.

Nancy jotted notes on a yellow pad pretending to be no different than anyone else in the room. She glanced up at Bayfield, whose eyes had settled on her; they were piercing and inquisitive. Then he shifted his gaze, but he’d noticed her, was thinking about her. Why? She’d done everything she could to blend in. He hadn’t seemed particularly troubled by her presence, just curious.

Nancy redirected her attention to the individuals sitting in front of her. She’d arrived early to claim an aisle seat in the back row. The raised auditorium layout provided an advantageous observation post. About sixty women and twenty men were in attendance, no doubt a decent turnout. Blackthorn College had a student body of less than two thousand.
