Win a copy of Cassie’s Hope

I wonder if other authors have a favorite character or a
story that feels real to them, as though it actually happened – as though if
they turn the next corner, the character will be there to greet them. My
husband and I, who write together as Adriana Kraft, have such a character: Cassie
O’Hanlon has been with us a very long time – in fact, hers was the first story
we ever drafted.

That early work never saw the light of day, and with good
reason – she wasn’t fully developed, and her plot definitely needed work. But
even then she had the elements that compelled us back to her story after we’d
become published authors—elements that drove us, in fact, to craft an entire
series around her and her circle of friends.

Those elements? The list is a long one. Hope-filled characters
with abiding integrity in spite of their flaws. A sense of being grounded and a
deep love of the land. Horses—a love my husband and I shared long before we
ever met. And of course, suspense, romance, and a happy ending, with just the right
dash of eroticism.

Cassie’s Hope is set in my husband’s ancestral turf,
the north central Illinois farming region where his British ancestors settled
in the 1840s. Her story was birthed while we were cruising that region looking
at cemeteries, visiting county archives and gathering family history. We think
maybe she’s a distant relative—certainly she has lived out some dreams that
were cherished by both of us.

And now we hope those dreams will grab some of you. Her four-book series, Riders Up, was published in 2013 and 2014. We’re about to release our sixtieth romance, coming from Extasy Books early next spring. To celebrate, we’ll be giving away autographed print copies of several of our earlier releases, one a month, and we’re starting with Cassie’s series.

High
stakes, a fiery Irish redhead, her stunning racehorse, and a fiercely loyal
rancher

What happens when a fiercely loyal widowed half-Ute cowboy meets a fiery redhead with an Irish temper to match? Cassidy O’Hanlon – Cassie, to her friends – has set aside her Chicago career for six months to train racehorses for her dad after his stroke.

Furious the interloper has shipped in a ringer from the
Chicago circuit to his Wyoming turf, Rancher/trainer Clint Travers sets out to
put her in her place. Sparks fly immediately, but after their rocky start, the
two quickly forge a passionate relationship, and he follows her to Chicago.

When it becomes clear someone is drugging Cassie’s horse,
Clint sets out to solve the mystery, but storms off in a cloud of wounded pride
when suspicions turn to him.

Can love trump pride?

Review:

Five Stars at Goodreads: “…I took their journey with them. I felt their pain, their sadness, their struggles, and most of all their love. And that is the mark of a truly good book.”  Faith, Goodreads

Dakota Son by Mary Ramsey on Tour with #Giveaway #MFRWAuthor

What is love? Baby, don’t hurt me.

We all know the lyric. But what does it mean to search for love without pain? Are we even worthy of such a thing?  That is the story of Dakota Son.

Sean Foster and Jenessa ‘Jen’ Quinto are young lovers who find strength in each other, to overcome past hardships and abuse. He saw the beauty in her confident, rebel-princess style; the way she arose like a phoenix from the ashes to take back her life. Her ex may have gang raped her and put it on the internet for the entire world to see, but Jen, she was a fighter. She survived that night because of the love of her father. And went back to school with a new persona; “I’m just Jen.”

And Jen saw in Sean, an inner strength like no other; maybe one other. Sean was born with Cystic Fibrosis, forced to endure a life of challenges; illness, pain.  Jen lost her brother to cancer, so experiencing Sean’s laid back surfer personality supplied a sense of calmness and hope, she so desperately needed.

And together their love will work miracles.

Excerpt

I kissed Jen’s forehead, down the bridge of her nose, to her lips. “I want you to touch my dick while you say something about me that will make me feel brave. Something more than what all of the other girls said to me.”

Jen bit her lip as she paused to think. “I know,” she said with a sweet smile. “You’re funny and kind. You’re going to make a great dad one day. When I look into your eyes, I don’t see your beauty. I see the man who saved my soul.”

I chuckled.

“What?” she asked.

“You were supposed to be touching my dick while you said all that.”

“My bad,” she said, grazing her fingernails down my thigh. “Does that feel good? God, you are so sexy.”

We started on our sides, facing each other. I struggled to find my rhythm, but luckily Jen found hers quite easily. She rolled me on to my back as she straddled my hips. She rocked her hips against mine in a slow deliberate motion.

I leaned my head back, taking deep breaths.

Jen paused. “Are you okay, Sean? If you need your inhaler—”

“All I know is… you look like an angel,” I whispered. A gust of wind blew a small stick to my shoulder. I ignored it as I moved my hands to explore down her beautiful skin.

I couldn’t believe it—we were finally having sex. No, this was more than sex: this was one perfect moment. The wind was blowing dirt on my body and Jen really could’ve chosen a thicker blanket. But as she kissed me, her face framed by the light of the full moon, I knew this was where I was meant to be. Jen was the love of my life.

We woke the next day naked in each other’s arms. I opened my eyes, gazing upon her beauty. “Good morning, my love.”

“Good morning baby, did you sleep okay?”

I smiled. I wanted to wake up to those eyes for the rest of my life. “I slept great. I got to make love to the girl of my dreams and we managed to survive the night without being murdered by a disfigured cannibal.”

“Hurray for us,” Jen said with a laugh.

We moved to the porch to watch the sunrise. I wrapped her naked body in the blanket as I held her. For the first time in years, I didn’t feel sick or weak. This was heaven.

Blurb

Sean Foster has lived with cystic fibrosis his entire life. He falls in love with Jen, a girl with a dark, emotionally painful past. Living with chronic illness, Sean knows a little something about overcoming pain. But when he meets her family, his courage will be put to the test.

Jen’s father, Diego, is a disabled military veteran. He is being mentally and physically abused by his wife, due to his role in the death of Jen’s brother.

Sean must find a way to save Diego, to help him see that there are people who truly care. From Sean’s sister Sara, who views Diego as a heroic father figure. To Remy, Sean’s holistic nurse with a talent for healing wounded souls.

Accompanied by a mysterious, supernatural, presence, it will fall to Sean to play the hero. All while navigating a life with chronic illness and chasing his dreams in California.

About Ghost of a Chance by McKenna Dean:

At sixteen, Sarah Atwell walked away from her love of horses and a promising career as a competitive rider after discovering she’d inherited the family curse. Years later, her grandmother stunned everyone by leaving Sarah her horse farm—worth millions—but with conditions Sarah might not be able to meet.

A former Redclaw agent, Casey Barnes retired when a security assignment went bad, killing his partner and leaving him as a partial amputee. His inner wolf is in hiding. He’s been living quietly as a horse trainer, but June Atwell’s death now pits him against her granddaughter for rights to the stable.

With both of them snowed in at the farm, a series of increasingly serious accidents draws Sarah and Casey closer together, but they both harbor secrets that might tear them apart.

Ghost of a Chance is a paranormal romance story.

Excerpt:

For some reason, he glanced back at Sarah where she waited by the door. The backlight of falling snow through the glass in the shadowed hallway created the suggestion of a black-and-white photograph. The only spot of color was the bright red scarf at the collar of her coat and the wine-dark lipstick she wore. She leaned against the wall with her eyes closed. Something inside him clicked, as though recognizing a scene from a movie. His heart stopped a beat, flipped over, and thudded again with increased intensity.

No. It couldn’t be. Not her.

He hurried away, head still reeling at his reaction.

When he returned with an armload of clothing, she was nowhere to be seen. Her laptop sat by her shoes, one pretty little pump turned over on its side. As expected, he discovered her in the living room, staring at the pictures on the wall. “There you are.”

She jumped at the sound of his voice.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” He adjusted the heap of clothing piled over one arm and held out a pair of snow boots.

“She had so many photographs of me.” Sarah took the boots almost automatically, and indicated the walls covered with pictures, ones Casey had seen many times.

That had to be it. Why she felt so familiar. Why she seemed to be the one. Relief washed over him. Obviously he’d spent too much time alone if he thought Sarah Atwell was his destined mate.

EXCERPT

AMANDA

I am eating a piece of grilled white asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, drizzled with melted manchego cheese and coated in crushed pistachio, when my friend and co-worker Josh ruins my culinary orgasm by bringing up my honeymoon.

More specifically, my lack of a honeymoon.

And all I can do is grunt.

“I’m just saying,” he says with a sigh as he waves his bacon-wrapped, goat-cheese-stuffed date around on its toothpick like he’s the conductor of the Boston Pops doing a tapas bar gig, “you married a freaking billionaire. You deserve a honeymoon.”

“It’s not about what Amanda does or doesn’t deserve,” Carol insists on my behalf. As I chew, I give her a look that either says thank you or is so indecent, I need a cigarette and a fan, because damn, that asparagus is good.

“What is it about?”

“It’s about what they want. I mean, my God, Josh! Andrew bought her an estate as a wedding gift. I think he’s got all the good-husband bases covered.”

Pfft. That? He’s a billionaire! That’s to be expected.”

“You’re pooh-poohing my husband’s gift to me? An estate in Weston, Massachusetts? It’s one of the most expensive zip codes in the country,” I say, parroting his affect.

“Hello? Billionaire? For him, that’s like buying a cheap condo behind the railroad tracks in Clinton. Declan bought Shannon an entire coffee chain.”

“This isn’t a competition,” I say, alarm making my pinot noir taste like vinegar.

“And he managed to give her a nice honeymoon in Hawaii.”

I lean in. “Define nice. Because those two still refuse to talk about their honeymoon.”

Guest Linda Nightingale “The Summoning” @LNightingale #Giveaway #MFRWAuthor

The Summoning is a book, like many others, about good versus evil.  It’s not a romance alone. The story evolves around this central theme—the misguided Shaman against the hero and the heroine, who is a witch but is unaware of that fact until she summons Eryael from his dimension.  I wonder if another dimension is a fantasy element, don’t you? I’ve touched on that question in another post on my tour. In the excerpt, from Eryael’s point of view, he hears Heather calling him across and responds.

I am sitting in my office at 4:30 AM writing this short post. I hope you enjoy the excerpt and are intrigued by what you read.  The language in the book is a bit stilted but that’s the way Eyrael speaks. I’d be interested in your comments on this.

Don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter.

I published The Summoning myself because my editor at The Wild Rose Press currently had another of my books to review, and I didn’t want to wait for her to work through at least one other book while this one languished in my computer. I don’t know the meaning of patience. So, here is The Summoning.

Blurb:

Heather Morique is a witch. The problem is she doesn’t know it. Her husband Jahill was a refugee from an obscure branch of the Arawak Indians. After his death, mysterious whispers lure her to his homeland of Jamaica. Soon, she finds herself in a web of secrets, lies and illusions.

Jahill’s people worship Eyrael, the God of Wind and Sea, and his brother Sofiel, the God of Fire and Earth. The new Shaman has pitted brother against brother, and these two powerful spirits from an alternate universe fight to become the tribe’s ruling deity. Will light or darkness reign?

When Heather unwittingly summons Eyrael, these two unlikely soul mates face a dangerous fate.  The chemistry between them is more disturbing than the long-buried secrets.

Excerpt:

Eyrael.

His name vibrated through his entire being. The intensity of the call shocked him. A sudden, unreasonable fear chilled him despite the warmth of the surrounding air. As he collected himself to respond, again another being’s panic seized him. Impossible but he was falling!

He was shrinking, compressing. It was a pleasant feeling, not painful, not frightening but interesting—a hugging together of his nebulous self. Disorientation should have alerted him that he was growing small enough to pass through, but it had been so long he’d forgotten.

This side of the curtain, time had no meaning. He remembered nothing of the other dimension—except that it existed in some vague, prickly memory.

Sofiel was with him, riding high on the crystal winds. His dark brother shot him a puzzled frown. He, too, felt the pull of the Summons. Chants echoed through his being, distant drums beating a seductive rhythm. A high-pitched scream—that of a woman—pierced him. Vague recollections of this tearing apart surfaced. The Summons was not for Sofiel. It was for Eyrael alone. Darkness blinded him, and he imploded.

Eyrael’s next awareness was the caress of a warm liquid holding and supporting him as the air had done moments ago. Not only the water, but he was changing shape, forming, drawing tighter together. He tried to expand, met solid resistance. He found himself inside a grid work of bone and flesh. A flash of light sizzled from the sky to the sea, thunder booming in its wake. Every detail of his previous visits to this place manifested at once. Strange the way that happened. It was always the same. One minute, he recalled nothing; the next, he knew everything. Memories waltzed before his eyes, beckoning him deeper into the mortal fold, the place where the People lived.

Their drums resonated in his blood, chants welding him to their realm. They had named him God of Wind and Sea, but commanded him to their will.

He concentrated on the shape of the People, flexing his arms, stretching his legs. Both too long, he had to adjust. The beach seemed far away, those gathered around the ceremonial fire stick figures. He blew out a breath, and the wind howled. He rethought his height. Finally, he achieved the Eyrael they expected to answer their Summons.

The sea played with his shoulders and his hair. Eryael smiled his Pleasure.

A scream gurgled in the waves ahead. A head split the churning ocean. One of the People. I must rescue. He shook the mane of hair back from his face and considered that, perhaps, he had too much hair. The tiny being reappeared frantically battling itself, spouting water from its mouth. Its cries stabbed him like splinters of darkness, and the pain, as much as any sense of duty, tugged him toward the drowning creature.

“Eyrael!” His name split the night sky, reverberating off the pinpoint stars.

He hated the mortal engaged in a hopeless skirmish with the water. Eyrael was irritated that its despair had somehow torn the curtain between the worlds and brought him over merely to sustain its brief flicker of life.

Silence. She no longer cried. Facedown, the waves washed a slender body toward the shore. A thrill shivered over his entire body. A woman, giver of the utmost Pleasure.

On the beach, dark shapes formed a half-circle around a blazing beacon fire. As one, they dropped to their knees and bent from the waist, their foreheads on the sand. A lone figure remained standing. The primal rainbow of feathers in the Shaman’s headdress danced in the wind of Eryael’s passage. Taino, young and virile, wiseman, witch doctor, a powerful magic user. The Indian sorcerer pinned Eyrael with eyes cold and hard as onyx.

Ah, the woman is a sacrifice. But not to me.

Time to hear something from the new “detour” in Traci’s future.

EXCERPT

“You handled that real well, McCord—real smooth. The woman must think you’re a Neanderthal idiot.” Scott McCord berated himself as he broke a bale of hay apart to divide among his horses. No doubt the woman was Traci Steele. She fit Cassie Travers’s description, hair as black as night falling below her shoulders, and tall.

She might only be a few inches shorter than him, and he was six-one even. And there weren’t a lot of single women in and out of Live Oak. It was a nice enough resort, but it wasn’t Club Med.

The Chicagoan was a looker, all right, very nicely proportioned. Yep, Traci Steele looked as attractive as Cassie had bragged her up to be.

BLURB

Hot-shot Chicago prosecuting attorney Traci Steele works tirelessly keeping rapists off the street to prevent other women from suffering the hell she’s endured, so she resists her friends’ insistence that she take a two month R&R in their California Live Oak condo—until they persuade her to help their rancher friend as a private investigator.

Though he runs the stables at Live Oak, well-muscled mustached wrangler Scott McCord much prefers working with the race horses he trains at his ranch, and he can’t believe his old friends have sent a greenhorn female to help him with horse troubles.

The improbable dance between this mismatched pair barely fits in around the escalating suspense of whoever’s after Scott’s horses. Traci is as tenacious in her sleuthing as she is terrified about her inability to ever love a man. Can Scott succeed in gentling her – like he does his horses – before she flees in panic?

We thought it was time for a little relief from Traci’s interminable detour. Think maybe the next detour is already in sight?

EXCERPT

The glistening adobe buildings with red tile roofs were no mirage—she had finally reached her destination. Pulling into a space near the resort office, she put the car into park, leaned back in her seat, flexed her fingers, and massaged her thighs.

She slid out of the car and stretched to her full height. Her long legs cramped, making her stumble and grab the car roof for support. Closing her eyes, she rested her head against the car and offered a brief word of thanks to whoever had been guiding her across that horrific curvy road.

She opened her eyes; her heartbeat jumped. There some hundred feet away in the horse stable doorway stood a tall man dressed in a short-sleeved blue work shirt, with a brown Stetson pulled low over his brow. She’d have to be blind not to see that the well-muscled man appeared poured into his jeans. The cowboy pulled on his hat brim before turning on his heel to retreat into the shadows of the stable.

Not very friendly—so much for western hospitality.

Out Now in eBook and Audio—Lottery Losers by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985) #romance #steamy #SupportIA #IARTG

I fell in love with this fun story when it came out in a boxed set earlier this year – now it’s available as a stand-alone, and I know you’ll love it, too! I’m always happy to see romance re-kindled in a married couple (well, and sizzling sex doesn’t hurt, either!).

Blurb:

Winning the lottery is a dream come true… isn’t it?

Susie Parmenter and her husband of almost twenty years, Peter, are lottery jackpot winners. They’ve been able to do everything they’ve ever dreamed of—quit their jobs, design and build their perfect home, buy expensive cars, travel the world… So why is Susie bored out of her mind? She thought being a lady of leisure would be amazing, but unfortunately the reality is far from amazing. How can she possibly tell anyone that, though?

Climbing the walls, sinking deeper into irritation and misery, Susie can’t see a way forward. But what she’s not betting on is that Peter has noticed his beloved wife isn’t happy. And he’s taken steps—drastic steps—to turn things around. But will they live to tell the tale?

Note: Lottery Losers was previously published in the Love Me Hard boxed set.

Excerpt:

Susie Parmenter let out a heavy sigh and closed her book, then put it down on the table beside her. She closed her eyes and let her head loll back on her shoulders, enjoying the warmth of the summer sunshine on her skin, which was pleasant but not too hot. It wasn’t the book that was boring her—under normal circumstances, she’d have been riveted by the crime fiction novel featuring a hunky lead detective—it was life. Just lately, her world had become so dull, so predictable, that she just couldn’t summon any enthusiasm for anything.

The worst of it was, she couldn’t tell anyone. It was a problem so utterly first world it was embarrassing. Humiliating, even. Admitting her permanent state of apathy would be ridiculous, and she doubted anyone would understand where she was coming from, anyway. After all, how could you possibly tell your friends, your family, your husband, that you were bored out of your damn mind when you had, quite literally, everything? Since winning a lottery jackpot twelve months ago, Susie and her husband, Peter, had had their worlds turned completely upside down.

At first, of course, it had been amazing. They had won more than enough money to live incredibly lavish lifestyles for the remainder of their years—even if they lived to be very old indeed. So, once the cash was safely in the bank, they’d quit their jobs. Then they’d taken off on an incredible round-the-world trip, spending much of their travel time plotting and planning what else they were going to spend their winnings on. By the time they arrived home, they were ready to hire an architect to draw up plans for a custom-build home. Another two weeks later, they’d found and purchased the plot of land, and were talking to builders. Things moved fast—but then, Susie had found that was often the case when large sums of money were involved.

Now their dream home was complete. It was, naturally, stunning. The huge house stood high on a hillside in the Derbyshire countryside, with only a handful of other properties in sight. It was situated so that from one side of the house, you could watch the sun rise in the morning, and from the other, you could watch it set in the evening. There was a covered and heated swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a gym, a home cinema… everything a person could possibly need or want, and then some.

They employed a cleaner and a gardener, so aside from cooking meals three times a day—if they didn’t eat out or order takeaway, that was—there was nothing to do around the house. Susie had moved the furniture umpteen times, which was a novelty at first, given their old house had been so small that every single item had a place that it fitted into—barely, in some cases—and that was that. She now found herself swapping pictures around and tweaking the positions of ornaments on a regular basis, often putting them back where they’d been to start with.

She’d gotten into a routine of using the pool, gym, and sauna every morning, but that still left hours and hours of the day just waiting to be filled.

It was all right for Peter—he might have ditched his job, but these days his time was divided between playing golf, and being involved in a bunch of stuffy business boards. She didn’t really understand what he did at the meetings, if she was honest, but it didn’t matter. What did matter was that, only weeks after moving in to their beautiful new home, Susie’s boredom was at fever pitch. She was climbing the walls. Surely even board meetings were more exciting than this?

Welcome to the world of horse racing! For the next few weeks we’ll be featuring excerpts from Detour Ahead, Book Four in our Rider’s Up Series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, and all four books are always available FREE at KU.

Danger, suspense, stunning race horses,
courageous heroines, and the
complicated men who love them!

…the rest of Traci’s encounter with the range bull, from Detour Ahead:

EXCERPT

The great beast came to a halt directly in front of her car and turned its head to stare at her. His eyes were enormous. Traci couldn’t think. She couldn’t react. She just sat numbly and gaped. Shaking his gigantic head, the bull ambled on across the road, and the cows followed.

Traci didn’t twitch a muscle for a full minute after the road was clear. Breathing shallowly, she shook her head at her white knuckles still gripping the steering wheel as if it was the last anchor to reality. Flexing her fingers, wetting her lips, she eased the car forward, cussing Cassie Travers more heatedly as she cautiously rounded each serpentine curve.

Why had she allowed her best friend to send her on this wild goose chase?
