Continuing in the world of horse racing, our FREE book this weekend is Heat Wave (Riders Up, Book Two).

EXCERPT

Maggie stared thoughtfully at the curious man while her daughter climbed the stairs to her room. Her stomach muscles tightened. She needed his help desperately. But she hadn’t counted on her body acting like that of some giddy teenager.

Ed Harrington was still thin, but there was a blurring of pain and challenge and mystery in his face that pulled and scared her at the same time. His hair was still shaggy, but it had been washed. His face, with its distinctive roman nose, reminded her of a shattered mirror. Was haggard handsome a decent way to describe a man?

Riders Up
Romantic Suspense Series

Danger, suspense, stunning race horses,
courageous heroines, and the
complicated men who love them!

These four books are the first my husband and I ever wrote when we took up the challenge of writing romance together. Each of us has loved horses since we were very young, and we’ve followed the triple crown races, attended three of them, and even (briefly) owned thoroughbreds—none of whom, of course, were triple crown contenders. But we learned a lot about the horse racing world at the level of the everyday average owner, and we poured that knowledge and our love for horses into those manuscripts.

It goes without saying that when we dusted them off years later, they required a LOT of editing, polishing, and even some plot changes. Still, it was a labor of love. This year, to celebrate the upcoming Kentucky Derby on May 5, we’re offering each of the books in Riders Up free, one each weekend.

This week it’s Heat Wave, Book Two, FREE at Amazon now through Tuesday April 24.

BLURB

Hang onto the land – but at what cost?

Feisty widow hires ace racehorse trainer to salvage her family’s heritage. Can they survive escalating threats to life and limb?

During an oppressive Iowa summer of drought and farm foreclosures, widowed Maggie Anderson makes a bold decision: She’ll merge her love of horses and her family’s three hundred and twenty acres into a horse farm and try her hand at nearby Prairie Meadows Race Track, where racing purses have just been augmented by the recently added casino gambling.

Down on his luck after being falsely accused in a racing scandal and banned from training, former Arlington Race Track trainer Ed Harrington has skulked home to Des Moines to drown his sorrows and wait for the dust to clear. He’s unprepared for the piercing robin’s-egg-blue eyes of pint-sized Maggie Anderson, who finds him at a flophouse and offers him a job. Can he pull himself together and meet the challenge?

As the two forge a tumultuous working partnership, they soon discover someone is out to get Maggie’s farm and will stop at almost nothing to force her off the land. Can they find and stop the culprit before someone is killed? Can they survive the far greater danger unleashed by the raw passion simmering just beneath the surface of their relationship?

#FreeDownload Heat Wave (Riders Up Book 2) Danger, suspense, stunning race horses, courageous heroines #MFRWAuthor

Have you ever lived through a blistering hot summer drought in the Midwest? We have. We’ve also watched family farms go bankrupt and be forced to sell out to corporations.

That’s what inspired our story line in Heat Wave, Book Two in our Riders Up series set in the horse racing industry. In 2000, recently widowed Maggie Anderson is sitting pretty with her family’s Iowa farm and a substantial life insurance payout. But she’s watching her neighbors fall behind and yield to the auctioneer’s gavel. Then she reads a newspaper article about nearby Prairie Meadows racetrack, where the recently added casino gambling has increased the purses for winning horses. She grew up with horses. Maybe it’s a pipedream, but Maggie decides to take a gamble with a portion of her savings and start a racing stable.

She needs a trainer, and we just happened to have one handy. Ed Harrington was a burr in Cassie’s side in Cassie’s Hope (Book One), always needling, sometimes flirting, often causing trouble with her new flame, Clint Travers. Since then Ed has fallen on hard times, but he’s a good man. Maggie’s insurance agent recommends him, and our plot thickens.

To celebrate the upcoming Kentucky Derby, Heat Wave will be free at Amazon this weekend, starting Friday, April 20.

Of course, it’s always free to read at Kindle Unlimited.

Danger, suspense, stunning race horses, courageous heroines, and the complicated men who love them!

Growing up, I was a horse-crazy little girl who devoured every book I could find about riding, grooming, caring for a horse, horse breeds, horse fiction… I could never understand why my parents refused to buy me a horse. But on my ninth birthday, they gave me a huge surprise. Ahead of time, they mowed a path among the blackberry bushes in our back field, and in the middle of the birthday party, a van and trailer from the local pony ring showed up with my favorite pony and pony rides for everyone present. I was in heaven!

For me, “horse-crazy” and “romantic” have always gone hand in hand. Luckily, as an adult, I met and married Mr. Kraft, who shares both attributes. We’d been married over a decade when a colleague at work, who was a small-time horse trainer on the side, offered us a deal we couldn’t refuse. We bought in, he and Mr. Kraft made the trek to Barrett’s sale in California, and we became co-owners of two thoroughbred race horses.

In real life, that’s not a money-making business for most folks. We’d no sooner stabled them with our friend than one of them (the more expensive one, of course), bowed a tendon. That ended her racing career before it even started, but she still proved valuable as a brood mare down the line.

So perhaps it’s no surprise that when we started writing romance together, we set our first stories in the world of horse racing, where we could give our plucky heroines far more success in the racing world than we’d had. Riders Up, our four book romantic suspense series, is the result.

Fun Facts About . . .

Sharon Buchbinder

Sharon Buchbinder and her husband used to breed and show Egyptian Maus and Color Point Persians (formerly called Himalayans). If you’ve ever seen the mockumentary, Best in Show, you have an idea of what life was like 24 out of 52 weekends a year for this wild and crazy couple. When Sharon returned to school for her PhD in 1986, she decided a doctoral program plus a toddler plus a full time job was more than enough and they placed all their cats in good homes―including their own.

Lashanta Charles

So I don’t really have anything too witty, but I have a 6-year-old with a sharp tongue. One of the things I always tell my kids is that mommy and daddy knows everything. So one day I’m taking my daughter to the store to buy toys with her birthday money. This is how the conversation went:

Her: So, who gave me this birthday money?

Me: Poppy (Grandad)

Her: Oh, I really miss Poppy. I want to go see him.

Me: Well, you have to wait until this summer, when you’re out of school.

Her: Why?

Me: Because you have to learn things in school and if you miss a day, you’ll miss what you need to learn and then you won’t know everything.

Her: Ohhhhh, you mean like you and daddy don’t really know everything even though you say you do?

Me: *speechless*

Keta Diablo

Keta once dressed up as old man on Halloween and picked up her 9th grader at school in costume! Needless to say, he wasn’t pleased. In fact, he refused to get in the car. She followed him out of the parking lot and down the street for two blocks before he’d even look at her. Yes, he finally got in, but didn’t appreciate her humor…at all. Update: He’s in college now and says the “old man” incident is now one of his fondest childhood memories.

Kat Doran

There was the time I played private duty nurse for my uncle, a parish priest, after he underwent a resection of an aortic aneurysm. It was a very scary for the entire family, for a number of different reasons. It became my job to ensure Father Joe got sufficient rest which boiled down to playing traffic cop and time-keeper on visitors. On one afternoon, I could see Joe was fatigued and needed a nap. As I rounded up the crowd to send them out the door, one smirked at me.

“Who’s Nurse Ratched, Joe?” he asked.

I said, “Who are you, the Pope?”

He said, “Close to it, honey. I’m the Bishop.”

Margo Hoornstra

Becoming a coffee connoisseur wasn’t an instant fall head over heels event for Margo Hoornstra. Initial cups were loaded with milk and sugar. When the children arrived, two AM feedings coupled with six AM risings for work necessitated more indispensable caffeine. Flavored, iced, lattes and such, a true coffee aficionado, she covets them all.

M.J. Schiller

One day–when M.J.’s triplets were about two, and her eldest four–she was doing laundry and matching up the socks, one of her least favorite chores. She lined them up all along her arms as she hunted for their mates. After a bit of fruitless searching, she glanced at the time and realized she needed to hustle to be on time for a prayer service she was attending at her church.

She made it in time, her four children in tow, and removed her coat before kneeling to say a prayer. An half hour later, as she piously prayed along with the congregation, her eldest asked, “Mommy, why do you have a sock on your shoulder?” She had missed removing one of her husband’s long, mateless gym socks!
