Criminal Minds
Do you like crime scenes? Do you like knowing what’s going on in the criminal’s mind as the crime unfolds? That’s the experience we offer readers in our latest release, The Heist. Our fictional characters Steven and Hazel Lawton are professional art thieves who’ve honed their talents arranging special order heists for private clients, and they have their sights set on a trio of nearly priceless impressionist paintings coming to a small Nebraska art museum on a traveling exhibit.
Take my word for it, they’re pretty creepy characters. We don’t want to say what crimes they may or may not have committed in the past, but it’s clear they’ll stop at nothing to achieve their goals, and they’re very clever.
In the end, of course, they’re no match for our feisty heroine, Kara Daniels, and the hot detective sent by the Arts Council, Ted Springs. But as the investigation heats up, Ted has to find out just what Kara’s willing to do to get the paintings back. Her answer may surprise you.
A heist? A murder? It’s villain’s choice.
Excerpt
From a phone conversation:
“Why would Steven lie to me?”
Ted laughed. “Your naïveté sometimes amazes me. Steven Lawton would tell you anything to convince you to have sex with him.” Ted cleared his throat. “And I can’t actually blame him.”
“Like I said,” Kara said coolly, “I don’t intend on having sex with Steven Lawton.”
“You don’t have to have sex with him, but you don’t have to be overly abrupt with him, either. He doesn’t completely turn you off, right?”
“I suppose. He was quite polite today. He looked more distinguished and gracious,” she chuckled, “even holding soiled rags. I can see why some women might be attracted to him.”
“Umm. Remember your rule about married guys. Anyway, he may not be involved with the theft at all. But he has the knowledge required to compromise the security system. He’s only been in town for three years or so. Other than that, I don’t have anything to suggest he’s involved. But he does want to get close to you. Maybe for more than sex. Had you thought about that?”
“No. I’m not as suspicious as you are.”
“Well, maybe that’s why I do what I do. One more thing. If it meant getting the Maids back, would you have sex with Steven Lawton?” There was a long silence. He hated himself for asking, but he had to know her answer.
“Why are you doing this to me?”
He didn’t respond.
“If their return was guaranteed, yes, I’d have sex with him. Gladly. Ted, I don’t know what you’re up to, but I’d do most anything short of murder to get those paintings back. It would only be sex.”
He laughed softly. “I thought so. We all have a price we’re willing to pay if we want something badly enough.”
