EXCERPT

Set Up: Having checked out the Center’s website from Rosanne’s business card, the detective has decided to drop in on a lecture at a college campus…

New York, New York 2014

Sitting in the back row of the small lecture hall, Tom Walker had a difficult time believing that the conservatively dressed, articulate, non-threatening woman explaining the hazards of sexually transmitted diseases was the same provocative woman he’d confronted at the rest area parking lot.

The hall was half-filled, with possibly two thirds of the audience female. Initially it had held a distinct air of tension, but Rosanne Falcon’s quick wit and sense of humor had helped relax the mood of the crowd. Clearly, Falcon and her co-presenter, Anna Jackson, were quite experienced at working a crowd. Jackson, with a nursing background, had been reassuring about how women and men could protect themselves and obtain treatment if they failed to do so. She came across very matter-of-fact, almost motherly.

He figured Jackson had to be in her forties. Taller than Falcon, the brunette was somewhat larger in build—not overweight, but leaning that way a little. She looked like money. The rings on her fingers reflected in the light, and he knew enough about women’s fashion to be aware the pantsuit she wore was probably tailored. All in all, pleasant looking, and knew how to dress for her size.

But Anna Jackson didn’t catch his imagination like Rosanne Falcon did. Hardly anything about Rosanne’s simple one-piece blue dress was sexy, yet she was the sexiest woman in the room. Was it her poise? It wasn’t her oversized loop earrings. Maybe it was her confident smile. She knew she had everyone’s attention.

Even his presence had only caused a momentary blip. He’d purposely come into the hall after he heard her begin to introduce herself and Anna. She hadn’t appeared shocked when he took his seat. By then she was already on cruise control. She had no doubt put him aside as a problem to deal with later.

Along with everyone else, he’d laughed when she’d informed them that the slide presentation was PG rated; if they’d been expecting X-rated materials, they’d be disappointed. She and Jackson shared several slides loaded with data on sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. There’d been a brief overview of the Center and its mission with a few slides of staff sitting around tables and working at computers. A couple slides of instructional DVD covers were at least suggestive. The slide that brought the biggest gasp of surprise, then titters and whispers, showed a table with a vast array of sex toys.

Clearly amused by the audience’s response, Falcon had quipped, “Don’t laugh. Some of those can be a woman or man’s second-best friend. Ladies, how many of you own at least one vibrator?”

A few hands went up, then many more. She’d laughed and clapped her hands. “Our research data suggests that the percentage is probably a little higher than that. Sorry if I embarrassed anyone.”

Now in her late twenties, Rosanne Falcon’s life has finally come together—a Ph.D., a prestigious research job, and two exquisite lovers, one of each gender, to complete the package. The intense bond she shares with Simone Stone was augmented rather than broken when Simone met and married Boyd Roberts, and the three have forged a fulfilling polyamory relationship. More would only be trouble.

Widowed by a tragic accident several years earlier, Detective Thomas Walker is nearing retirement after twenty years on the police force and ready to change careers. Fully convinced the hot redhead who meets truckers at the rest area he’s staked out is a prostitute, he sets out to build his case against her. He is dead wrong, but each layer he uncovers of what she really does for a living challenges long held assumptions. Can he overcome his deep-seated bias to make room for what’s possible?

EXCERPT

Set Up: Rosanne has shared her concern about the detective’s investigation with the Center staff.

New York, New York 2014

“I don’t care what you say,” Center Co-Director Harry Gage grumbled, “I don’t like the idea of a cop nosing around. Nothing good comes from that.”

Melissa Hopkins-Gage, the other co-director, shook her head at her husband, who sat on the opposite side of the office round table, with Simone Stone and Rosanne on either side of her. She knew he was only expressing his concern for their staff.

She was pleased that Anna Jackson, the Center’s part-time community education director and board member, had been able to join them this morning. In her early forties, Anna brought a certain wisdom to the Center as well as strong commitment to the Center’s broad educational mission. That she probably colored her raven hair and that her body had matured with age, displaying a slightly thicker waist and wider hips than Anna preferred, made her an asset, particularly in fantasy videos depicting a middle-aged woman’s role. Her enthusiasm in front of the camera rivaled that of her younger colleagues.

“We don’t have anything to hide, Harry,” Melissa reminded her husband. “You know that.”

Melissa glanced at Rosanne, who was uncharacteristically antsy. She’d seldom seen her friend so out of sorts. This detective must’ve shaken her up more than she was admitting. “If your detective comes to the Center, we’ll show him around. If he thinks we’re trying to hide something, then he’ll probably hang around a lot longer.”

Rosanne nodded, looking less than convinced.

“I haven’t liked this damn project you two are working on from the beginning.” Harry raked his graying hair. “It’s not safe. And it makes you look like…”

“Harry,” Rosanne interrupted, “we’ve discussed this ad nauseum. Simone and I are careful. We back each other up. We’ve nearly completed our sample selection. Simone’s already finished with her part of the data collection.”

“Right,” Harry huffed. “Because Boyd finally put his foot down. At least her husband has some sense.”

Simone thrust out her chin defiantly. “I agreed to quit because I didn’t have any more data to gain. My preliminary analysis suggests we’re developing a fairly complete picture of the trucker who seeks a liaison while on the road. Don’t make it sound like Boyd has me on a leash.”

Melissa smiled at the spunky woman, who was only two years older than Rosanne. Both women had their doctorates. Both were avid advocates for the Center and its mission. And both could twist Harry Gage around their fingers. She should know. She’d been doing that since before they married. “You know they’re not going to be satisfied until their research is done, Harry. If things were reversed, you’d feel just as strongly.”

Giving up, Harry scrunched his mouth. “That doesn’t mean I have to like it.”

“No, I suppose it doesn’t. So,” Melissa said, taking charge, “if this detective shows up, we’ll be nice to him, answer his questions, and show him around.”

“You won’t show him around,” Rosanne protested, “if we’re working on camera.”

“Of course not,” Melissa agreed. “We can show him the stages and sets when they’re not in use, which is most of the time. Do you really think he’ll track you down?”

Rosanne took a long time to respond.

Melissa knew Max’s granddaughter better than most. That flicker of emotion wasn’t exactly fear. So she was more than a little curious about the man who’d apparently stalked her from the rest area to the rental car agency. Melissa smiled to herself. She’d tuck that bit of information away, just in case.

Rosanne flexed her fingers and wet her lips. “I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t,” she said at last. “Detective Walker strikes me as a man who won’t be satisfied until he has all the pieces of the puzzle in place.”

“And you’re his puzzle for the moment.”

EXCERPT

New York, New York 2014

Continuing where we left off last week: Detective Tom Walker has just met the subject of his investigation…Now we’re in Rosanne’s point of view:

Glancing in her rearview mirror at the detective fuming near his car, Rosanne couldn’t suppress a shudder. While she and Simone always knew they’d have to have a lot of luck not to attract the attention of a cop before completing their research, it still was a little unnerving to come face to face with one. He’d nearly spoiled her day. Her early-morning rendezvous with Ben had provided a wealth of information on the life of the over-the-road trucker.

And then the cop was waiting for her. He’d acted rather befuddled by her presence. She liked that, a lot. She hadn’t been afraid he’d arrest her. He had no evidence, because there was no evidence to get. She might be a working girl, but not the kind he suspected.

She checked her mirror. Would he follow her? She shook her head. He probably already knew who she was. She’d seen him nosing around a couple times. And he’d followed her the previous week to the car rental. He probably already had her name and address, but he’d seemed more than a little puzzled by her card.

Maybe he’d give up now that he’d confronted her. She smacked her lips. Detective Walker didn’t strike her as a man who gave up easily. Would he stalk her? Would he come to the Center to question her, or Melissa and Harry Gage, the Center directors? If he did, he’d be in for a surprise or two.

She’d have to warn her friends and mentors about his interest, not that the Center activities hadn’t been scrutinized before. There were many folks out there—too many—who didn’t appreciate the mission of the Center to foster healthy sexual relationships across the lifespan. Toward that end, the Center produced and distributed instructional videos affirming most forms of sexual practices between consenting adults, as well as a catalogue of toys, lubricants, and other sexual aides. Its work had become more sophisticated and more embracing since its inception in the mid-sixties. Its market had also grown geometrically.

She was proud of her work and knew firsthand how the Center had helped to save marriages. If it hadn’t been for the Center, she wasn’t certain her own grandparents would’ve made it. It was Grandma Agnes who had sought help from the Center and encouraged Grandpa Max to volunteer with her. Their work on camera had drawn considerable praise and offered hope to many older couples. After Grandma Agnes died, Grandpa Max eventually hooked up with Claire Johnson, who’d spent her entire career with the Center—the woman Grandma Agnes had sought out as her coach.

Rosanne ran a brush through her short hair. And now it was her turn to promote the work of the Center. She peeked at the rearview mirror. And no damn cop was going to make her think less of her work.

Grinning at the memory of his gaze roving over her, she couldn’t help but wonder if he’d go out and rent a semi and call her. She was familiar with that look. For a moment, he hadn’t been a cop assessing a suspect. He’d been an aroused man assessing a woman.

EXCERPT

Set up: Tom has been watching an explicit Center video featuring Rosanne…

Tom glanced at the business card on the arm of his chair. He’d punched in her number several times, but never followed through with placing the call. He punched it in again. Closing his eyes, he pushed the send button.

Holding the phone to his ear, he listened to the ring tone and focused on the frozen shot on the TV screen of Simone’s tongue touching Rosanne’s hooded clit.

Seven rings. She must not be near her phone. He’d just started to put the phone down when he heard her voice.

“It took you long enough to call,” Rosanne accused lightly.

He chuckled. “And a warm hello to you, too. I had a lot of things to square away.”

She remained silent.

“I talked with Sam and another of his buddies. They confirmed your story.”

“Told you he would.”

“Yeah, he thinks you walk on water.”

She chuckled. “I haven’t tried that. I can hardly swim. Then I’m no longer a person of professional interest?”

He grimaced, eyeing the TV screen. “Nope.”

There was a pause. “So am I a person of interest, or are you ready to move on with your life? Is this just a courtesy call, Detective? Or do you have something else on your mind?”

“I’m watching a DVD of yours.”

“Really? Ooh.”

He could almost hear her perk up.

“You and your Simone friend.”

“What a coincidence,” Rosanne murmured. “You like to watch two women making love?”

“I didn’t know I did.” He chuckled low and pulled his robe sash tighter. “I also like the good neighbor policy you and Melissa worked out on a different fantasy video.”

“Ummm. That’s one of my favorites. Perhaps you have better taste than I thought. You have been busy – Oh!”

Tom frowned at the phone. “Are you alone?”

“Good God. Wait. I was wondering if you were going to ask. If you’re really watching the video of me and Simone, you may want to fast forward to the section with Simone lying between my legs licking my pussy.”

“That’s where I paused it,” he grunted. “Damn hot. Are you telling me you answered the phone while she was loving you?”

“Is loving me. Maybe I didn’t make my situation clear. Oh damn. Go slow, Simone. I wouldn’t answer for just anyone, Detective. Did you have something to else to ask me?”

“No.” He hesitated. “I was just thinking of you.”

“That’s nice,” she purred. “How many times have you jerked off watching my videos?”

He swallowed. “I haven’t kept count.”

She clucked her tongue. “Touché. At least you’re honest. I don’t count orgasms either. Is your guy handy now?”

“He’s been poking out of my robe since he heard your voice.”

“And we haven’t even met yet. Why don’t you punch play and join us? Leave the DVD volume on mute.”

Tom closed his eyes briefly. This was not the moment to deny why he’d called her in the first place. He’d just thought it would be the two of them having phone sex. “Okay.”

“Tongue me, Simone. We’ve got a listener tonight. Oh, she wants to say hi first.”

“Looking forward to meeting you, Detective,” came the higher pitched voice. “It’s nice to know we have a cock with us tonight. My husband is traveling.”

“Oh,” Tom mumbled. “Good to meet you, too.”

“Oh yes,” Rosanne murmured a moment later. “She’s butterfly kissing me. Are you with us, Tom?”

“I’m here.”

“She’s wedging her tongue in. Oh my. Tongue and finger.”

He heard her gasping for air and his fist moved up and down his rigid cock. On the screen, she was kicking Simone’s back and thrusting her pelvis, encouraging tongue and fingers.

“I’m building. She’s almost got me. I’m imagining it’s your tongue, Tom. Are you?”

“I am,” he groaned. His arm began to ache.

“And your mustache,” she whimpered. “Are you going to come with me?”

“I will. Let me know when.” He trained his eyes on the two women on the screen while listening to the sounds they made miles away.

There was a long pause.

“Now,” she yelped. “Come with me.”

“I am,” he muttered, jerking in his chair. “Son of a bitch,” he shouted at the TV as one spasm tumbled after another until he finished.

“Hope that was as good for you as it was for us.” It was Simone’s voice. “That was huge on this end.” Her chuckle tingled. “Looks like our lover is going to be nursing this one for quite a while. You probably need to clean up, right?”

“Yeah,” he grunted.

“I doubt she’ll call back tonight. Rosanne has another research encounter tomorrow morning and will need to get her rest.”

“Damn.”

“Thought that might interest you. Well, Detective, it’s been fun. Maybe one of these days I’ll get to help clean you up personally. Sleep well. Bye.”

Continuing where we left off last week: Detective Tom Walker has just met the subject of his investigation…

Rosanne stared at him a long time as if assessing. “I thought you might prefer voyeurism. You have that look about you.”

Tom curled his fists at his side. This was not going the way it was supposed to. Why was she so confident? She acted like she really believed she was innocent.

She dug into her small purse and pulled out a business card, then thrust it out to him. “Wouldn’t want you to strain yourself trying to keep track of me.”

He glanced at the card: Rosanne Falcon, Ph.D., Research Associate, Center for Sexuality and Sex Practices, with an address in Manhattan.

He shook his head. Maybe she was a bullshitter. He glared at her pink lips as they bowed into a smile while he tried to ignore her pebbling nipples.

She peeked at his growing arousal, and a laugh escaped her mouth. “Of course, if you really want to check me out, you could go out and buy a semi.”

Flashing an eyebrow, she pulled keys from her purse, flicked the remote, and slid in behind the wheel. “I’m developing a preference for Peterbilt.” She gave him a small wave. “Bye.”

Tom leaned against his white sedan, not sure if he should laugh or cuss. Had he just been conned by an expert? He glanced at the card in his hand. At least she’d made it easy for him to check her out. She certainly believed she had nothing to hide—or if she did, that she was well protected from him.

He’d see about that. She might not dress to allure, but she was one damn sexy lady. He gazed out across the truck parking area. How many of those guys thought they’d gone to heaven and back with the redhead?

Leaning against his car, Tom watched the Falcon woman head toward the interstate. She hadn’t seen the last of him. He’d dig into her until he had her pretty ass nailed to the wall.

Shaking his head, he unlocked his car. He’d been on the force for nearly twenty years, and he’d never heard a story so far-fetched. She might have the Stevenses snookered, but the Falcon woman wasn’t about to snooker him.

Continuing where we left off last week: Detective Tom Walker has just met the subject of his investigation…

“I’m Rosanne Falcon. I’ve been wondering when you were going to introduce yourself.”

“What the…”

“Detective…I assume detective,” she said, tilting her chin.

He must’ve looked as rattled as he felt.

“You people always drive such non-descript cars that it’s obvious you’re a cop.” She scowled. “You seem pretty quiet. I assume you have some questions for me.”

Collecting himself, Tom flashed his badge. “Detective Thomas Walker, ma’am.” She didn’t sound like any call girl he’d encountered. Her tone was educated and assured. Not cocky like a bullshitter, just assured. That was annoying. His presence was supposed to unsettle her. It did most people. He towered over her by nearly a foot and could probably tuck her under his arm and carry her around the parking lot. “Did you have a pleasant morning?”

“Very,” she said, smiling demurely. “Thanks for asking. I hope you didn’t have to wait too long.”

“Not too long. You seem to be a lady with a clock in her head.”

Her smile didn’t fade.

He blinked. She didn’t look that different from many women her age. She sure didn’t look or behave like a hardened whore. Her cat-gray eyes were the most inquisitive he’d ever seen. There were at least a half dozen studs in her left ear lobe. While she wasn’t drably dressed, the jeans, faded tee, and sneakers were hardly the apparel of a woman setting out to attract customers. Although the words on her tee, I Can Make Your Day, did suggest bravado, they’d hardly convict her in court.

“Efficiency can be a virtue,” she quipped easily. “Aren’t you supposed to ask me how much I charge? Or are you just checking out the merchandise?”

He didn’t like her dry chuckle. She wasn’t stupid. She was playing with him, and he didn’t like being played with by anyone, especially by a young woman who made her living on her back. “So how much do you charge?” he rasped, knowing full well he was stepping into a trap.

“Not everything has a price tag on it, Detective.” Her eyes burned. “What I offer can’t be bought.”

“You really think I’m going to buy your story about not charging these truckers?”

“Ah, you’ve been talking with the Stevenses. They’re nice people.”

“Yeah, you three must be part of some sort of mutual admiration society. But I’m not buying it. Not for a second.”

She snickered and squeezed his arm. “Like I said, Detective, I’m not for sale. If you want me, you’ll have to earn it.”

“I didn’t say I wanted you,” Tom stammered, taking a step back.

“So be it,” Rosanne chided. “If you’re not going to arrest me, then I need to get going. The day is speeding by.”

“I’m going to get to the bottom of this,” Tom huffed. “I’ll be looking over your shoulder.”

She stared at him a long time as if assessing. “I thought you might prefer voyeurism. You have that look about you.”

Continuing where we left off last week: Detective Tom Walker is about to meet the subject of his investigation…

He’d meet Dee, all right. Only her name wasn’t Dee. It was Rosanne Falcon. Twenty-eight years old. Five feet four. One hundred and ten pounds. Or so her driver’s license claimed. She lived in an upscale section of Brooklyn. The trade did well even in a poor economy.

He’d followed her to the rental car business the last time he’d staked out the rest area. There wasn’t enough time to devote to her case, there never was. He didn’t know much else about her yet. He didn’t know if she worked freelance or was part of a larger circle of women. He’d even checked out the Stevenses in part because if he could get a line on her pimp, he might be able to crack something larger than a single working girl. He’d known Ray and Nora casually for years. They hadn’t seemed like pimp material, but he’d checked them out anyway. As he’d expected, they were squeaky clean.

The hissing of air brakes drew his attention to a Peterbilt coming to a stop in the truck section of the rest area opposite from where he stood. “Pay dirt,” he mumbled.

There she was, sitting in the passenger seat. He watched her turn and peck the driver on the cheek before climbing down to the pavement. She took a half dozen steps toward her car before turning to wave one more time to the trucker, who grinned broadly and waved back before shifting gears and pulling out toward the main highway.

Smiling happily, Rosanne Falcon nearly skipped her way to her car. He found it difficult to believe she wasn’t charging, but maybe she relied on huge tips.

The redhead didn’t even sober when she saw him standing between their cars. “Good morning,” she said, eyeing him openly. “I’m Rosanne Falcon. I’ve been wondering when you were going to introduce yourself.”

BLURB

New York, New York 2014

Chapter One

“You’re telling me she’s doing nothing illegal?” Detective Thomas Walker remained stoic, assessing the graying man and woman he’d known for years. He’d stopped by the rest area kiosk to determine whether the couple managing the place was aware of the young redhead operating out of their parking area.

Raymond Stevens shrugged, and his wife, Nora, shook her head. “Dee’s a sweet girl,” Nora said. “She’s stopped by a few times with fresh coffee and doughnuts. She has a delightful smile and a big heart.”

“Coffee and doughnuts?” The damn woman was brazen, if not smart. These two wouldn’t likely testify against her. “What about you, Ray?”

The older man shrugged again and glanced at his wife. “She’s a nice girl. Not breaking any laws that I know of. She doesn’t camp overnight. I’ve been here at midnight, and the parking lot is empty. Sometimes her car is here before seven when we open. Of course, it’s not like she’s around on a daily basis.”

Tom shook his head and glanced at his watch. If she was on schedule, she was due back in about twenty minutes. He’d watched this drama unfold several times now. She’d have a car—an empty rental car—parked at the south end of the parking area. A trucker would pull through the parking area designated for trucks no later than mid-morning and stop across from her vehicle. The redhead would often kiss the driver before climbing down from the cab and strolling to her car as if she didn’t have a care in the world. The trucker would then be on his way.

And she was a nice girl doing nothing illegal? “Do you suppose she has a special interest in semis?” he said, more sharply than he’d intended.

“She’s not a whore,” Nora retorted, tucking a strand of hair back into her silver bun, “if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“Really?”

“We’re not naïve,” Nora protested, “but several truckers over the past several months have talked to us about Dee. They praise her like she’s a modern-day Florence Nightingale. They’re discreet, never going into detail, but it’s clear they’ll defend her any way they have to. They describe her in glowing terms as easy going, a good listener, fun to laugh with.”

“I bet. She must be worth a lot.”

“Nora already said the girl’s not a prostitute.” Raymond bristled. “Whatever Dee does with those guys, she doesn’t charge a dime.”

Scowling, Tom said, “How do you know that?”

“We were more than a little curious at first when we realized there was a pattern of a woman parking a car here to go off with truckers. We wanted to be sure we weren’t being misused.”

“And the truckers talk to you about her? About not paying?”

“I don’t think anyone is trying to hide much,” Nora pointed out. The sixty-something woman’s eyes sparkled. “The guys probably aren’t telling their wives about her, if they have wives.”

“But they tell you?”

Raymond chuckled. “People coming through the rest area seldom tell us their names.”

Tom checked his watch again. The Stevenses smiled at him. “Thanks, I’d better be going.”

Nora nodded. “She should be back soon. She’s usually quite punctual.”

“Another plus, I assume. She must have a lot of repeat customers if she’s so damn good.”

“They’re not customers, and she’ll only go off with a trucker once,” Nora responded.

“Once? You sure?” That didn’t compute at all. Repeat customers was the foundation of the prostitution trade.

“Once.” Nora clucked at him. “Doesn’t that make Dee even more mysterious, perhaps more special to the guys? She’s almost like a mirage.”

“Or a will-o’-the-wisp,” Raymond said with a trace of awe.

“Oh, I do hope you get to meet her, Detective. You’ll find out that what we’re saying is true.” Nora beamed at him. “I’m sure you’ll like our Dee.”

“You bet I’m going to meet her,” he grumbled.

Tom walked toward his car, which he’d left parked next to the rental. He’d meet Dee, all right. Only her name wasn’t Dee. It was Rosanne Falcon.

EXCERPT

Set-Up: Here’s a peek at the hero – hard at work on his rehab after his initial appointments with Gwen:

“Damn.” Dante groaned, pulling the stiff green band across his chest to the right. His therapist had said this would help heal his rotator cuff injuries. What had she called the exercise? Horizontal abduction, if he remembered right. He didn’t really care what it was called. He could tell it helped. Already his shoulder was a little less painful—unless he skipped a day. That was motivation enough to keep going.

Still, after three weeks of rehab, he’d expected to be further along toward a full recovery. His therapist claimed he was making very good progress, given the extent of the initial injury. He grimaced as he repeated the exercise with the band. He might be patient as he prepared legal cases, as he coached kids on the ball diamond, or as he made love to a woman he desired, but he’d never been very patient with himself. He wasn’t used to functioning at less than full throttle.

He shook his head and continued the drill. Gwen McFarland was proving to be a tenacious coach. She never let up. Even when they took a break for him to relax a muscle, she would demonstrate yet more exercises. And her voice stayed with him even now. Stretch, relax, stretch.

Dante dropped the band and reached for the bottle of water he’d left on his den desk. Fortunately, her sense of humor encouraged him to go beyond what he thought were his limits. He also couldn’t shake the eerie feeling that he’d met her in some other place. But he couldn’t recall ever doing so. Certainly he’d remember the tall, dark-haired woman with copper-tan skin. He thought of her as his personal drill sergeant.

He swallowed more water, knowing he’d sweated out more than he was taking in. He smiled. She wasn’t all drill sergeant.

BLURB

Is she a ghost? A visitor from another time and place? A siren? A temptress? Or just a meddling dream mistress?

Seren has bided her time for centuries, waiting for the moment when two of her descendants fall in love and release her, finally, from the place between worlds. The many gifts Seren has inherited from her ancestors—time travel, entering dreams, telepathic communication—have been unsuccessful thus far. Will Gwen and Dante be the ones?

Gwen McFarland has always been in touch with her Celtic roots. When Seren—who looks to Gwen like a Celtic goddess—materializes and invites her to a love tryst in another time and place, she does not hesitate. That Seren sometimes brings along another woman is simply an added benefit.

Fast paced trial lawyer Dante Emmanuel has no time for sentimentality or relationships. A string of satisfying sexual encounters suits him just fine. He’s mystified when a recurring figure enters his dream life, but he won’t turn down Seren’s exotic sexual talents or the dreams that now seem more real than ever.

Who will make the first move in this three-part game of chess? Timing is everything.

Set-Up: Seren has whisked Gwen away from her office desk, and they’re at Seren’s cottage in some other world. Picking up where we left off last week:

“In due time, my love, all will be clear.”

“Hmmm.”

Seren worked Gwen’s hair aside until she could nibble on an earlobe.

“That feels so good, Seren. But why would I like him any more than Elizabeth does?” A chill shot through her body and she turned to meet Seren’s gaze directly. “You’re trying to throw us together—you’re not going to make me love him, are you?”

Seren chuckled and nipped Gwen’s shoulder. “I don’t have that kind of power. I wouldn’t use it that way if I did. All our destinies are intertwined. I know that. I can’t change that, but neither can I make things turn out the way I hope they might. You are mortals, and I have to abide by your rules.”

“Well that’s a relief—if it’s true.” Gwen laughed softly. “Even so, I do trust that you must have some limits on how far you can interfere, or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

“Clever girl.” Seren pulled away. “Your dark hair is luscious. You truly have the gifts and are in tune with our ways, with your roots. You are so much more in tune than Dante.”

“What do you mean?

“If you must know, Dante has the same gifts you possess, but he is only slowly becoming aware of them. Not enough to own them or name them. Perhaps you’ll help him claim his gifts.” Seren kissed her cheek. “Now you must return. I believe a mysterious man is on his way to seek your healing spirit.”

“I’ll do what I can. Physical therapy is what I do for a living.”

“Yes, but Dante Emmanuel carries much deeper pain than physical.”
