Planning Stately Pleasures by Lucy Felthouse

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, it took a while for me to make the jump from short stories to novellas, then from novellas to novels. I was worried that I didn’t have enough “story” to warrant a novel, or that it would get boring, or that I’d get bored.

But when the time came for me to start working on Stately Pleasures, I decided there was only one way to find out—I’d have to get on with it. With short stories, I never bother planning as they often just come from a small idea and I then write and see what happens. But this couldn’t be the case with a novel, I could end up meandering through a story, have no actual plot, or something equally horrendous. So, to ensure I wrote a full-length book which had plot, journeys for the characters, continuity and lots of hot sex, a plan was needed.

I know writers work in many different ways when it comes to planning, but I went back to being somewhat old-fashioned. In a brand new notebook (any excuse) I started scribbling. Then I shuffled things around, crossed things out, added things and finally had twenty (I think – I don’t have the notes any more) chapters planned out, with a beginning, a middle and a satisfying (I hope) ending.

Once that was done, I had no excuse. I had to get on with it—and so I did. It was much easier having the plan there, although I knew I wouldn’t stick to it 100%–if things changed it wasn’t an issue. It just meant that once I’d finished a chapter, I could look at the notebook and know exactly where the story was going next. There were no moments of indecision, of wondering what was going to happen next, how the characters were going to get from A to B, and why.

That’s not to say it wasn’t hard work. It was, very much so. I’d been used to being able to write a short story in a couple of days—a very quick and satisfying thing. A novel, of course, takes much longer, so the satisfaction of finishing is much further away. But far from being disheartened by this fact, I let it spur me on. Each word, each chapter I completed was another step closer to the end. And the more I wrote, the more I was determined to get it finished and not see the work I’d already done go to waste.

And, obviously, I got there! I think it took me roughly four months, which I don’t think was too bad considering that included the planning and a little extra research, and that it was my first full-length novel. I also don’t write full-time. I was very proud of my achievement, although I knew it wasn’t the end of the work! More information on Stately Pleasures’ route to publication in tomorrow’s post.

Alice Brown has just landed her dream job. Property manager at Davenport Manor, a British stately home. It’s only a nine-month contract to cover maternity leave, but it’s the boost up the career ladder she so desperately needs.

Unfortunately, things don’t get off to the best start, when Alice finds her boss, Jeremy Davenport, in a compromising position. Far from being embarrassed by what’s happened, Jeremy turns things around on Alice and makes her out to be the one in the wrong. So when he and his best friend and head of security, Ethan Hayes, then throw an ultimatum at her, she’s so stunned and confused that she goes along with their indecent proposal.

When the dust settles and Alice has time to think about things, though, she realises that perhaps it isn’t such a bad thing. There are worse things she could be doing to advance her career, after all.

Excerpt:

Alice took a deep breath, in through her nose and out through her mouth. Repeated the process once more. Then, realising she could sit there all day doing it and not feel any calmer, she forced herself to step out of the car and close and lock the door.

She bent to peer into the wing mirror of the vehicle and checked her hair and make-up. Satisfied, she straightened, then turned on her heel and walked quickly across the driveway to the great house before her nerve failed her.

Davenport Manor was currently open for visitors, so she walked in through the front door and was met by a smiling elderly lady.

‘Can I help you?’ the woman asked kindly.

‘Yes, please.’ Alice twisted her hands together nervously. ‘I’m here to see Mr Davenport. I’m here for an interview for the property manager’s role.’

‘Yes, of course,’ the woman replied, ‘that’s today, isn’t it? Follow me; I’ll take you to Mr Davenport’s office. But just hang on one second.’

She ducked through the doorway into the next room and spoke with her colleague. Alice guessed she was letting her co-worker know she’d be gone for a few minutes. A few seconds later, she was back. ‘OK, follow me, Miss …’

‘Brown,’ Alice said, then fell in behind the other woman as she led her to Mr Davenport’s office, and the interview that could change her life for ever. It was hardly surprising that she was shaking like a leaf.

Alice quickly felt lost as their journey took several twists and turns along dim corridors – their blinds drawn to protect paintings, tapestries, and furniture from the sunlight – and up a flight of stairs. She had a few seconds to worry about finding her way if she was lucky enough to get the job, then, suddenly, her guide stopped outside a door and turned around.

‘Here you go, Miss Brown. Mr Davenport’s office. Good luck with your interview.’

Alice smiled and thanked the elderly woman, then smoothed down her skirt, which also conveniently helped wipe the nervous sweat off her hands. She stood up straight, gave herself a mental pep talk about being more than qualified for the role, and knocked on the door.

‘Enter.’

Alice knew that voice could only belong to Jeremy Davenport. The posh accent, and the fact he’d said “enter” instead of “come in”, screamed money and an upper-class upbringing. Alice was suddenly nervous of her broad Midlands accent and lowly background, despite the fact she’d worked her backside off to get into a decent university in order to gain a Bachelor of Arts degree and then a Master’s degree. No matter what she sounded like, or what her past was, she had all the skills necessary to do the job she was about to be interviewed for.

Suddenly, she realised that she’d left rather a long pause before opening the door, and she turned the handle before the occupants of the room thought they were about to interview some kind of simpleton who couldn’t follow a simple instruction.

Fixing a polite – but hopefully not inane – smile onto her face, Alice stepped into Jeremy Davenport’s office. Her first thought – which certainly did nothing to help her nerves – was good God, he’s hot.

Jeremy sat behind a desk, with a heavily pregnant woman sitting beside it. Alice barely noticed the woman. All she saw was him. A man with cropped dark brown hair, hazel/green eyes, a jawline you could cut bread with, and lips that looked capable of doing incredibly wicked, sexual things to a woman. Or a man. Alice had no idea what his sexuality was, but she found herself hoping he liked women.

She chastised herself. Even if he did like women, he wouldn’t go for someone like her. A Plain Jane, with mousy brown shoulder-length hair, blue eyes, average height and above average weight. Alice had always known she’d never be a supermodel, so she’d worked extra hard academically, and here she was. About to be interviewed for her dream job.

Today we’re thrilled to welcome back guest author Annabeth Leong, here to tell us about her latest release, One Flesh. I sure like the sound of this one! Click on the graphic at the end for the rest of her tour stops – and be sure to enter her rafflecopter giveaway at each stop!

On Planning the Wedding Night

Thanks so much for having me here again! As always, it’s a pleasure to be here.

Last fall, a slew of articles came out trumpeting the news that more than half of couples don’t have sex on their wedding night. According to an article in the Daily Mail, in a survey of more than 2,000 people married in the last three years, 52 percent said they didn’t have sex on their wedding night. For 17 percent, it was more than three days before they found their way to bed together to do more than sleep.

I do have some questions about the source of the statistics. The survey cited in news articles was apparently commissioned by a UK company called Voucher Codes Pro, and I’d be curious to know more about why they’re interested in wedding night behavior. That said, the statistics certainly cued the schadenfreude. I found a bunch of pieces online that gleefully punctured people’s expectations of a romantic, sexy wedding night. The Daily Mail quoted Voucher Codes Pro’s marketing director, George Charles, as saying, “It may be that the stress and pressure of organising a wedding takes the main priority, especially considering such a large proportion of couples have been living together for years.”

I’ll admit to having been through a couple weddings myself, and Charles isn’t entirely wrong. The first time I got married, I attempted a bachelorette party the night before and fell asleep on the floor while attempting to play Boggle. It’s certainly exhausting to deal with details and family.

I think, however, that it would be nice for more attention to go to the wedding night. That’s what my recent release, One Flesh, is all about. Leticia and Rosalie are getting married, and Rosalie wants to think about what they’re going to do when the big moment comes. More and more I’ve learned that a good sex life requires time and attention. Hot sex may feel effortless in the beginning of a relationship, but I don’t think it works to trust a connection to remain that way. For my most recent wedding, we scheduled the ceremony for early in the day and then went immediately to a hotel for a long nap. Fortunately, after the nap, there was still plenty of day left, and we’d regained enough time and energy to have some exciting sex.

If it’s worth taking time to figure out what color the centerpieces should be, I think it’s worth thinking about what kind of sex would feel hot, connected, and satisfying on the big day—and on every big day to come.

Blurb:

Leticia and Rosalie are planning their wedding, wanting very much to make their special day one to remember, but Rosalie has something else weighing on her mind, one more thing she wants to make as special and as memorable as the ceremony itself—their wedding night. Rosalie wants to be with Leticia in a way that neither of them had ever been with anyone else. But finding something that would be a first time for both of them turns out to be harder than expected.

As it turns out, there is one thing Leticia has wanted to do but has never trusted anyone enough to allow herself to overcome the fear of it. And it’s something that Rosalie has never done either.

The women discuss the idea of fisting as a means of connecting and forming an intimate bond with each other, one that they’ve never formed with anyone else. They’ve never loved or trusted anyone else they way the love and trust each other, and they are determined to find a way to make it work.

Excerpt:

“I’ll call tomorrow to tell the church how many flowers we want to order,” Leticia said, sighing and folding her notebook closed. No matter how many neat lists she made with her favorite purple pen, the sheer quantity of wedding-related details was overwhelming. “Can you call the caterer back, Rosalie? I still feel like they sneaked a charge in somewhere, but I can’t get a straight answer out of them about it.”

Her fiancée smiled indulgently. “Better yet. I’ll go in person on my lunch break, and they won’t know what hit them.”

“Great.” Leticia rubbed her temples and closed her eyes. She’d wanted to go to bed early, but another evening of wedding planning had made that completely impossible. She was excited to be marrying her one true love and all, but it was easy to lose track of that when she had fourteen phone calls to make and her mother demanded an e-mailed progress report every single night. “That’s got to be enough for now.”

Leticia stole a quick glance at Rosalie. She’d changed into a cute pair of pajamas when she got home from work, the childish pattern an odd contrast with her sophisticated coppery makeup. Leticia briefly fantasized about peeling the clothing away, revealing her lover’s curves and smooth brown skin. Unfortunately, at that very same moment, she had to stifle a yawn. She was so damn sleepy. They would need to get to bed immediately if she was going to give Rosalie proper attention.

“We can’t quit planning yet,” Rosalie said. “We haven’t discussed the most important thing, and it’s coming up soon.”

Leticia groaned. She flipped her notebook open again and paged through her color-coded, highlighted lists. “We’ve talked about everything I had listed for the day, and we even went over things that have deadlines coming up in the next few days. I don’t see what we’re—”

“The wedding night,” Rosalie purred. “We haven’t discussed that at all.”

There was no mistaking the sparkle in her eyes. Leticia actually blushed, the way she had at Rosalie’s makeup counter the first time they met, when the other woman’s soft words of praise, roughened by the obvious desire in her voice, had gotten Leticia so hot and flushed it had been impossible to identify the correct shade of foundation for her skin tone. She’d been forced to come back later, not that she’d minded.

Now that she’d figured out what Rosalie was hinting at, Leticia played innocent. For all her lover’s passion, her Catholic upbringing had left her with an adorable aversion to using direct language. Leticia loved to watch Rosalie get flustered while trying to explain her naughty desires. She batted her eyelashes and focused on her notes again. “We’ve reserved our hotel room the night of. We’ve got our plane tickets to Puerto Rico for the honeymoon a couple days after that. Everything appears to be in order.”

“The wedding night,” Rosalie said, apparently oblivious to Leticia’s teasing. She rolled her hands through the air, one over the other, the gesture an invitation to take the word “night” and run with it. “The whole reason I wanted an afternoon wedding was so we could have plenty of time together. Afterward. In the hotel.”

“You mean to take a good, long nap? I’m sure we’ll be tired after dealing with all the guests, and coming down from pre-wedding nerves, too.” Leticia couldn’t resist continuing the act.

“Not a nap. But I am talking about what we might do in bed.”

Guest ~ Tamsin Flowers: The Christmas Tattoo

Today we welcome Tamsin Flowers, here to share her Christmas release, The Christmas Tattoo.

December is here and so now we can all start to officially feeling the Christmas vibe. And to my mind there’s nothing like a Christmas love story to make you feel warmer than a glass of mulled wine all the way through! The Christmas Tattoo has all the perfect yuletide ingredients – sugar, spice, snowflakes, a carol service, Christmas trees and a burgeoning romance. Of course, it can’t all run smoothly – this romance has its ups and downs – plus some red hot encounters that our hero and heroine are powerless to resist!

BLURB

When sexy red-head Bradie Clements comes home from Washington to nurse a broken heart and build bridges with her estranged father, she’s certainly not on the lookout for romance. After catching her boyfriend Kris in bed with her best friend and boss, all she wants to do is run and hide. But a chance encounter with local tattoo artist Colton Bassett leads to an unexpected appointment with his needle. Even though it’s cold outside, the temperature rises to boiling point as the two discover an irresistible attraction. But then Kris arrives on the scene to claim her back in time for his family Christmas and Bradie starts to remember what she saw in him. Tormented by jealousy and suspicion over Colton’s pregnant business partner, Bradie starts to wonder if her new romance is over before it’s begun…

Excerpt

Bradie followed him through to a small studio.  The walls in here had the same patchwork of designs and there were two work stations, one with a black reclining barber chair and the other, a sort of articulated massage bench which could be arranged into a range of positions.   A work station along one wall carried the tattoo artists’ equipment: a huge selection of ink bottles and a number of scary devices that looked for all the world like medieval torture instruments.

Bradie considered them and swallowed hard.

“Take a seat,” said Colt, going over to the bench and picking up a particularly vicious-looking instrument.

Bradie backed up and found the back of her thighs pressing against the arm of the barber chair.

“Sit.  I can’t do you standing up.”

Bradie stumbled back into the seat, her breathing suddenly faster and the sound of her heartbeat drumming in her ears.

“But… I haven’t told you…”

Colt advanced on her and pressed a button on the device.  A sudden whirring noise whined out of it.

“Wait…”

Colt towered over her now.  He turned the gadget off.

“You don’t remember me, do you, Bradie Clements?”

Bradie sat bolt upright.

“From?”

Colt rolled his eyes.

“School.  Only four years in the same homeroom, Bradie.  We even went on a date once.  But the less said about it the better.”

Bradie closed her eyes and delved back in time.  The height… the dark eyes… a date to the movies.

“Colton Bassett?  But you had black hair at school.   And you were skinny.”

“Okay, enough,” said Colt, running a hand through his blonde hair.  “It figures, I’ve changed.  But you haven’t.  Still the long red hair.”

“So why didn’t you say anything on the train?” said Bradie.

Colt put down the tattoo gun and perched on the edge of the massage table.

“I saw you and I remembered the date.  I didn’t want to remind you of it.”

Bradie could see why.  It had ended in disaster.  She had been an innocent co-ed and Colt had tried to feel her up in the back row.  She’d panicked and run out of the theatre and then spent the rest of the school year regretting it.  The blood rose to her cheeks again.  Shit, why did he keep having this effect on her.

“And now?” she said.

“Probably better to get it out in the open if you’re gonna be in town for a bit.  Look, I’m sorry for the way I behaved back then.”

“No, I am.  I always wished I’d stayed in there.”

WTF?  She had some sort of runaway mouth on her this morning.  She bit her lip.

“That came out wrong.”

“I’ll change the subject,” said Colt.  “So what sort of tatt do you want?”

Bradie thought for  a moment and then shrugged.

“A Santa sleigh?”

Colt laughed.

“Or perhaps a candy cane?” he said.  “They’re always popular.  But seriously?”

“I had a bad year, so something that means a new beginning maybe.  Perhaps a few words or a quote.”

“Where would you have it?”

“Not on my arm or leg.  Somewhere more private.  My hip, maybe?”

The room seemed suddenly smaller, hotter.  Colt stood up.

“Show me.”

With shaking fingers Bradie popped the top button of her jeans and tugged the zip halfway undone.  Then she pushed the waist band down a way to expose the jut of her hip bone.

“Here,” she said.  It came out a whisper.

Colt came closer.  He ran his thumb over the place she indicated, brushing the top of her black lace panties.  His warm skin hummed against hers but his touch sent a red hot jolt of current up through her.  Her breath caught in her throat as she was suddenly overwhelmed with a desire to stroke his skin in return.

“It’ll hurt, across the bone there.”

He moved his thumb a little closer to her navel, pushing the black lace and denim down a fraction further.

“Whereas here would be less painful.”

Bradie’s eyes met his.  Colton Bassett.  Her teenage crush.  And now with his hands back where they’d been once before.  Their eyes locked and his face came closer.  Bradie took a deep breath as a surge of adrenalin, lust and anticipation flooded through her.  Was this about to happen?

Tamsin Flowers

Tamsin Flowers loves to write light-hearted erotica, often with a twist in the tail/tale and a sense of fun.  In the words of one reviewer, ‘Ms Flowers has a way of describing sexual tension that forces itself upon your own body.’ Her stories have appeared in a wide variety of anthologies and she is now graduating to novellas, for publishers including Cleis Press, Xcite Books, Secret Cravings and Totally Bound. This year, she entered NaNoWriMo, with the intention of penning her magnum opus in the very near future.  In the meantime, like most erotica writers, she finds herself working on at least ten stories at once: while she figures out whose leg belongs in which story, you can find out more about her at Tamsin’s Superotica or Tamsin Flowers.

Siobhan Muir ~ Guest Author

We’re thrilled to welcome Siobhan Muir back to our pages today, to celebrate her newest release, The Navy’s Ghost.

SEX

Do I have your attention now? Heh, it seems to be a word folks naturally gravitate to, but also fear. Sex brings up images and memories and sensations, some of which aren’t always good. I want to focus on the good ones. Sex abuse is another matter entirely, and not something for today’s blog.

As I tell my kids, focus on the good things.

Sex comes in all shapes and flavors, and like the number of people there are out there, the styles of sexual gratification and pleasure vary just as greatly. Some prefer individual attention like masturbation. Others prefer having a partner, or more than one at a time. Some folks like to trade partners. For myself I have one partner who I like to pleasure as much as possible (time and children permitting) and prefer only having one person to focus on.

The “hows” of gratification are also varied and there is no wrong answer as long as the partners are consenting adults. Do you need ropes and chains? Impact play or something more intense like knife or fire play? Perhaps role-playing takes a larger portion of the attraction. Whatever your personal interest and flavor, the key to sexual gratification is understanding yourself and your partner(s). Understanding comes from paying attention and recognizing your needs. And making your own decisions about those needs, despite what someone else might tell you.

In my new release, The Navy’s Ghost, Ensign Christiana Brickman gets the opportunity to really come to grips with the kind of sexual gratification she wants, but she has to convince the men that to her, sharing is okay. One of her chosen partners, Chief Warrant Officer Todd “Magic” Hunter had never considering sharing, but finds the idea arousing. However, her other partner, Lt. Jim “Retro” Waters, has been taught sharing is “wrong”, “perverted”, “depraved”, etc., even though it was his chosen form of sexual pleasure since he’d reached his teens. Chris has just dangled an illicit carrot in front of him and Jim starts fighting his instinct to reach for it.

EXCERPT

Silence stretched once more and the sounds of the coffee shop filled the space. Jim’s thoughts churned in his eyes, but his face showed nothing and Todd hoped the lieutenant wouldn’t shut down. Chris’s confession rocked the strict, militarily precise world they’d lived in, and Todd found he liked the upset. Hell yeah. He hoped she wanted them both in bed, too. Probably. She doesn’t do half-measures.

“You ever considered sharing a woman?” Jim asked at last.

“Before Chris said anything? No.”

“You really love her?”

“More than life, man.”

“Yeah, me too.” Jim grimaced as if his coffee had soured.

“How long?”

“Since SERE. The damn Kookaburra song sucked me right in.”

Todd chuckled and sipped his coffee, thinking back to their time at SERE training. “Yeah, that was damn funny. I sang the song in my head for weeks after.”

Retro snorted, a little more humor in his expression, but he sobered quickly. “The thing is I’ve never met anyone like Chris. The only women I went for were soft, feminine, cuddly. You know, like a kitten or a puppy.” He scraped a blunt nail on the tabletop. “But Chris blew it right out of the water. She’s kick-ass and strong and so damn beautiful, I get hard just thinking of her taking down the enemy, slamming the butt of her rifle in their faces, and still managing to extract the targets.” He met Todd’s gaze. “She kept up with us in training. Hell, she led us through a lot of it. I figured she’d slow us down, make us worry over her welfare and abilities. Boy, did she kick the shit out of that idea.”

Jim’s hands encircled his coffee cup, but he didn’t pick it up. He seemed to be picking his words instead. “She won me over at SERE and only backed up my respect and admiration over the years we’ve worked with her. It just about killed me when she went down in that miserable dump. If you hadn’t been there…” He swallowed hard.

“God, she looked so small and so beaten then. It was all I could do to keep from beating the contact into a bloody pulp. I just labeled it as further training in torture and made sure we got out safe. I’ve never been so scared in my life.”

He paused and turned his gaze to the window. “Until now.”

Todd agreed. Chris had terrified him when he’d clamped her femoral artery closed, grateful to whichever God watching out for her he’d been able to grab it before she bled out. He’d definitely earned his nickname. But she’d survived and he renewed his gratitude every day. As for her confession of loving both him and their classmate Retro, it didn’t frighten Todd so much as shock him. A whole new set of parameters had risen up for him to consider.

He could hear Chris’s voice egging him on. Are you man enough to take it, boys?

“You’re freaked out?” Todd focused in keeping his voice carefully bland.

“Well, yeah. I mean, aren’t you?” Jim’s jaw tightened. “Happily-ever-after always meant the guy gets the girl of his dreams and they hook up. Done. I never heard it included another guy, much less one of his best friends. And I’m straight, man. Straighter than a flagpole. I have no interest in ‘entering at rear’.” He shuddered dramatically.

“Not even anal sex with a woman? You’ve never even thought about it?”

Jim shut up and stared at Todd, his eyes suspicious.

“Are you really considering what she proposed?”

“Was it a proposal? I figure she just told us what she felt.”

Retro growled. “Same difference. Are you really okay with the idea of sharing her?”

Magic dropped his head and rubbed his fingers across the surface of the table, brushing away crumbs left from a previous customer. Am I okay with sharing the woman I love with Jim?

The thing was he loved Retro, too, loved him as a brother and a friend. But he wasn’t gay. Like Retro, he held no interest in sucking cock or getting rammed by a guy’s rod. But making love to Chris with Jim there, sharing in their love and the physical expression of it—Hell yeah, it turned Todd on more than just fucking Chris alone. They’d always been stronger as a team, including their private, intimate lives. Todd had never considered sharing before, but now the idea of fucking Chris with Jim intrigued him.

“Yeah, I am.”

Guest Author Emerald: What’s in a Label?

What’s in a Label?
Subjectivity in Art and Life
by Emerald

I’ve never considered myself a romance author (even an erotic romance author)—probably, admittedly, because as in life, the word “romantic” seems foreign and perplexing to me. I’ve never felt particularly romantically oriented in real life, and I sense my inclinations in writing have tended to reflect that. Though I have written—sometimes deliberately—stories that would likely be perceived and have indeed been published as erotic romance, in an underlying, foundational way, I still experience sex as the foremost focus. The sexual urge, connection, and/or action is how I am perceiving and conveying what is occurring between the characters. Genre-wise, I identify as an erotica rather than a romance author.

Thus, a few weeks ago when I had the utter joy and privilege to attend the inaugural Hot Mojave Knights (HMK) Romance Reader Event in Las Vegas as a featured author (at the very flattering and appreciated invitation from co-organizer Siobhan Muir), I felt some concern that I would seem out of place. I took care to emphasize my more romantic work there, but I was awash in a very new crowd of people who were far more familiar with and oriented toward the featured genre of the convention than I was.

I’ll get back to that.

The Cougar BookOne of my favorite things about HMK (and I’m not just saying this because it’s their blog—seriously!) was meeting the couple that writes as Adriana Kraft. Because we were in The Cougar Book (edited by Jolie du Pre and published by Logical-Lust) together back in 2010, I would have found this cool anyway. But I was blown away by how delightful and extraordinary I found talking to both of them regardless of our mutual publication. Conversing with them (especially when we got to sit beside each other for Sunday’s book signing) was one of the most glorious things about HMK for me.

Adriana Kraft and I also got to be on the erotica panel together, along with Marla Monroe (at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, woo-hoo!). I anticipated and enjoyed speaking about our perceptions of the distinctions between romance and erotica. Then someone asked the panelists about our perspective around the difference(s) between erotica and porn.

While this is a question I’ve appreciated answering, for some reason it took me by surprise in this context. I was nonetheless delighted to receive it and that someone had thought to ask it.

The first thing I said is also the first thing I’ll reiterate here, which is that I have observed some of my highly esteemed colleagues offer compelling and articulate responses to this that diverge from my own, and I want to offer space for that. I haven’t experienced this conversation as antagonistic; we just disagree. The perspective I offer, obviously, is how I see it, but I don’t feel disturbed that others see it differently.

I profess no difference between erotica and porn. For one thing, I find any proposed distinctions deeply subjective in nature, which contributes to my not feeling strongly about somehow “defining” either as opposed to the other or attempting to draw some hard line between them. But probably the bigger reason is that it has often seemed to me that the word “porn” has a negative connotation in much of society, and for me it simply doesn’t. I do not experience any embarrassment or resistance to being associated with porn and don’t feel it’s a label from which I need to exert effort to separate my work.

The first two listed definitions of pornography in the online version of Merriam-Webster are 1) “the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement” and 2) “material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement.”

Works for me.

In a larger context, I feel our society experiences and exhibits so much repression and shame around sexuality that areas of labor that overtly relate to it have tended to be denigrated, undermined, and/or underrated (to put it lightly). The idea that pornography, a vehicle intended to sexually arouse, is an inherently negative thing not only does not resonate with me but simply makes no sense to me. Thus, I feel no need to dissociate my own work from it by emphasizing a difference between it and erotica. If pornography fundamentally refers to works intending to sexually arouse, it seems hard to me to make a case that my writing is not at least sometimes that. And I see no reason to argue with it.

To return to my own concern about appearing out of place amidst a conglomerate of romance authors and readers, it later occurred to me that perhaps, like some other labels, the distinctions between erotica and erotic romance may be perceived more subjectively than I have tended to see them. To be sure, there are requirements that writing labeled romance must fulfill in order to take on that label. And my work sometimes doesn’t. For one thing, rather than the happily-ever-after ending imperative in romance, many of my stories do end up with happy characters, but it has much more to do with sex that just occurred than with any purported ongoing relationship between them. In some stories, the ending might even seem more ambiguous than happy. But I have also written stories that seem to fit the general erotic romance delineation, and perhaps my own wariness about whether I’m doing that “right” is less significant than how readers experience it.

As a lovely incidental affirmation, the week after I arrived home, I received a contract for the story I submitted for consideration for Best Erotic Romance 2014, edited by Kristina Wright and forthcoming from Cleis Press. I am thrilled that my story “Rules” will be included in it when it releases early next year. :)

All labels aside, as it turned out, the concerns I felt about my place at HMK seemed not only unfounded but to actually reflect one of the most rewarding aspects of my experience there. I’ve been to conferences where I know most of the attendees and presenters. I have found these extraordinary, of course, just as I did this one, but there was an unmistakably different flavor being among so many unfamiliar names and faces. It didn’t take long for me to discover that more than anything else, the true gift of being at Hot Mojave Knights was the opportunity to be exposed to and meet so many new people—in this particular case, new, extraordinary, fabulous people. That there are all these authors out there of whom I was unaware and that I simultaneously got to meet and spend time with in person was a breathtaking delight.

Even though I was excited about going and prepared for it in various ways for months, I still found myself astonished by how magnificent a time I had at HMK 2013. It was a truly splendid event, and it was an honor beyond words for me to be a featured author there—all genres aside.

Guest Blogger ~ Shiloh Saddler

Today we’re thrilled to welcome to our pages debut author Shiloh Saddler, here to tell us about her new historical release. Leave a comment to enter for her giveaway!

An Unusual Couple

Today it isn’t unusual in the United States for a woman to be married to another woman, or for a woman to be with another woman as a life partner. Gay rights have come a long way, and yes there is still a long way to go.

My debut novel The Virgin Madam takes place in Bitterroot Flats, California in 1879. During this time it was definitely considered sinful to have intimate relations with the same sex and there were many laws on the books making it a crime.

Laura Rutherford inherits her papa’s brothel after he is murdered. Becoming the madam makes controlling her urges for the working women even more difficult. She fights these thoughts and thinks she is a freak until she meets Josephine “Joe” Bascum who shares her desire to share her life with another woman.

Josephine, dressed as a cowboy, walks into the brothel looking for a room to stay the night. She’s lived her life for many years as a man. I’ve read many historicals where one of the ladies has a boyish frame and parades around town as a man. I know based on research that some women actually did do this. It is the only safe way Joe can be with a woman and it fit her tomboy personality well. From their first meeting she realizes the woman she wants is Laura.

Excerpt:

“You’ll run into the furniture if you don’t watch where you’re going.”

I opened my eyes, my head naturally snapping toward the voice. Sitting emerged in the tub was Mr. Bascum—or rather Miss Bascum. I blinked at her small exposed bosom. “You’re, you’re a she.”

She laughed, the pleasant noise reverberating through the room. “Name’s Josephine, but don’t go spreading it around.”

“Why are you dressed as a man?”

Josephine let out a deep sigh. “That is a long story. The short answer is I’m safer as a man, and society frowns on a woman riding horses astride and handling a gun.”

“I see.” And now I knew why I was attracted to this stranger—she was a beautiful woman with blue eyes I could easily lose myself in.

I looked at the sudsy water in the tub, hiding the lower half of her body. It had been a long time since I had taken a bath. Papa let the working ladies bathe before me. They brought in money; I didn’t.

“You may share the bath with me,” Josephine said, “water being scarce and all.” She spoke casually as if it was a commonplace occurrence.

I averted my gaze immediately. I’m not sure why. Fire spread across my skin from my cheeks to my ears to my neck. Suddenly seeing Josephine naked as the day she was born seemed wrong. I had seen plenty of naked girls growing up in the brothel. I had seen even more since I took over running the place. But Josephine wasn’t just another naked girl; I wanted her, which made her proposition dangerous. I was afraid my sinful lust would show. Sharing a bath with this beautiful woman might be too much temptation.

Josephine smiled playfully and beckoned me over with a finger. “Nothing improper,” she said, “unless you want.”

I gulped air. How far would improper go? A teasing touch or something more?

Blurb:

After a vicious outlaw murders her father, Laura Rutherford sees no future beyond running the family brothel and kowtowing to the local gang. Not even marriage offers escape. No man can compete with the beautiful women who dance the can-can for her each night…at least not until a gentle stranger sweeps in and opens her eyes to desires too long denied.

Joe Bascum stumbles into Bitterroot Flats looking for a place to hide from a gunman out for blood. When the innocent Madame from the local brothel offers a bed and bath, Joe accepts hoping to show the buttoned-up beauty just how right forbidden desire can feel.

When danger escalates, can Laura help Joe defeat the famous Fletcher gang, or is she destined to live a lonely life as the virgin madam?

Author Nikki Prince: Why I write Interracial Romance

The delightful Nikki Prince shared our table at the Masquerade Ball last month when we attended Hot Mojave Knights – we’re thrilled she can join us on our blog page today!

Why I Write Interracial Romance

Thank you so much for having me, Adriana Kraft.

First and foremost I want to say interracial romances are still just romances.  They have the added flavor of bringing different races together, but when you peel back the layers it should still have all the elements of a regular romance story.

One thing that I think of when I remember the history of interracial relationships is the marriage of Richard and Mildred Loving.  They married in 1958 when it was illegal to do so.  Interracial marriages didn’t become legal until 1967 and sadly enough the last state that held on till 2000 was Alabama.

So when one thinks of that and writes IR, it’s still like it’s still like brand new territory.

Why do I write Interracial Romances?

I think there are several reasons people choose to write them.  There isn’t truly an easy answer or a right answer. I do it because I wanted to see myself in a heroine.  I have been involved in interracial relationships since I was a teen.  My parents were military and we didn’t ever see anyone’s color – we saw the person beneath the skin.  I also like writing interracial love because I have two small biracial children who need to see people that represent who they are in love.

I’d also like to add that there is so much flavor when you pepper a story with people from different cultures. I also hope that my characters always show that they are true to themselves and through their conflict there is growth.

I have several books which feature a black woman and a white male but I’ve also written where my males are Latino.  I even went outside of the box and wrote a lesbian couple who were a black female and a white female.  To me love sees no color right along without seeing someone’s gender.

Guest Author: Tamsin Flowers

Today we’re thrilled to welcome erotica author Tamsin Flowers, here to chat with us and tell us about her new book, Zombie Erotoclypse, just in time for Halloween.

Adriana: Why don’t you start by telling us about yourself?

Tamsin: I live in London and I write erotica under the name of Tamsin Flowers – this is my public life! Under my real name I have a whole other life all the details of which are a closely guarded secret – which makes answering your question a little difficult! But I can tell you about my hobby. When I’m not glued to my laptop working, I love taking photographs of graveyards, especially when they’re run down and overgrown. In London we have some amazing Victorian graveyards – not just the famous ones like Highgate Cemetary but even the little local church yards. The results can be amazingly atmospheric!

Adriana: Do you read primarily print books, ebooks, or both?

Tamsin: I read both. Given the choice, I prefer reading on my ereader due to its convenience and because it’s light. That’s particularly relevant at the moment as I’m wading through all the Game of Thrones books and they are HUGE! And of course, as an erotica writer, I like the privacy my ereader affords me.

Adriana: Tell us one thing about yourself people would be surprised to learn.

Tamsin: Well, the people who know me in ‘real life’ would be surprised to learn that I write erotica! On the other hand my readers might be surprised to learn that I have two university degrees and neither of them is in English. They’re in economics and nutritional medicine – about as opposite from creative writing as you can get!

Adriana: Tell us about your writing: How long have you been writing? What genre(s) do you write in? What have you written (short stories, novels, etc.)? What works are currently for sale? Where?

Tamsin: Whoa! That’s five questions in one! I’ve been writing all my life but I’ve only been writing erotica for the past couple of years. Erotica is my main genre, the one in which I’ve been published, but I have WIPs in other genres – young adult/contemporary romance – that will hopefully see the light of day soon. Most of my stories that have been published so far are in erotic anthologies for a variety of publishers – Cleis Press, Xcite Books, House of Erotica and Go Deeper Press – and I have quite a lot more anthology stories due to come out in 2014. I also have three novellas in the pipeline and now I’m moving up to write longer works. My current release, however, is a solo collection of five shorts called Zombie Erotoclypse and I think the title pretty much gives away what it’s about! To find out more about my books, visit www.tamsinflowers.blogspot.com

Adriana: What made you chose to write erotic literature in particular? Is there any other genre you’d like to write? And if so, why?

Tamsin: I started out with erotic literature just by chance – I came across a call for submissions on the internet and thought, Hey, I could do that!  So I gave it a try, sold a story and the rest, as they say, is history. I liked it so much, I stuck around.  But I’d love to write a really tight, tense thriller one day. I get so much satisfaction out of reading them, particularly when they have a clever twist in the tale, that I’d love to write one myself.  Who knows? Maybe one day…

Adriana: Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Tamsin: I’m definitely a plotter, in infinite detail – and then when I’m writing I go right off at a tangent and have to plot everything all over again!

Adriana: How do you get ideas for your stories? What inspires you?

Tamsin: Anything and everything inspires me – from a remark I overhear to a face in the crowd, a snippet of a story in the paper or something from my own past. I soak up details like a sponge and then churn them around in my brain until some sort of plot or story or character gels.

Adriana: Any advice for those who want to write?

Tamsin: At risk of people throwing books and shoes at me, I don’t believe there’s such a thing as writer’s block. If you seriously want to write, just sit down and write, even if you scrap most of it later. Your writing talent’s like a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets. If you think you’re blocked do a few writing exercises to loosen up and have a few different WIPs on the go at once that you can switch between. But you know the phrase – just do it.

Adriana: What’s the most useful book on writing you’ve ever read?

Tamsin: I would really recommend books by Sol Stein.

Adriana: Who are your latest crushes (celebrity, book character, or otherwise)? Do you ever keep those people in your mind when writing your own works?

Tamsin: Current crushes: Jesse Pinkman, Tyrion Lannister and Eddie Redmayne – and yes, I do sometimes try to capture the essence of some crush or other for one of my own characters.

Adriana: If you could pick anyone in the world to be the cover model(s) on your latest release, who would it be?

Tamsin: Definitely Eddie Redmayne – those bee-stung lips…swoon…

Adriana: Do you have a favorite character out of all the ones you’ve written? If so, who is it and why is s/he your favorite?

Tamsin: I really like the lead character, Jed Marshall, in my story Lucky Mascot which appears in Go Deeper Press’ anthology Huddle. In the words of editor Angela Tavares: “Tamsin Flowers’ narrative in Lucky Mascot reminded me at first of Bret Easton Ellis. This was the deal winner. There’s something, you know, a little Less Than Zero about it: a kid of some privilege; previous history with drug use; confident, but bored and wanting to be elsewhere, anywhere, than where he is—until he takes a walk and stumbles upon the superstar pitcher, who’s up too late for someone with a important game the next day. So, Jed, the narrator, and Dick (that’s right—Pitcher Dick Gunnison) negotiate a way to ease all nerves and get the potential MLB candidate off to dreamland. It’s glorious how quickly they move to the solution that ends in release and relaxation for them both.”

Lucky Mascot was the first m/m story I wrote and set in a world I knew nothing about – American college baseball – so to receive such praise was really mind-blowing. But why I think Jed Marshall works is that for some reason, I really managed to get inside this character’s head, which can sometimes be hard when you’re just writing a short story.

Adriana: How can fans find you? (web, blog, social networking links, etc.)

Tamsin: I have a blog Tamsin’s Superotica and a website www.tamsinflowers.blogspot.com.

Twitter: @tamsinflowers

Facebook: Tamsin Flowers

Adriana: Tell us about your latest release – we’d love an excerpt, too!

Tamsin: My latest release is a solo collection of short stories called Zombie Erotoclypse – find out more about it and where to get it on the Zombie Erotoclypse page on my blog.

Here’s a short excerpt from a story called I Was a Teenage Zombie Virgin:

EXCERPT

Teenage virgin zombie John has just been rescued from a baying mob of healthy humans by a girl he used to know before he became a zombie. She saved him for the sake of her brother who, when bitten by a zombie, was taken from the family and killed.

Like I said, every zombie has the vestige of the human he once was flickering inside him, and at that moment, I forgot our differences.  I forgot that I was zombie and she was a healthy girl.  I forgot that all I wanted to do was fuck her and then eat her and I caught her up in my arms and held her tight against my chest.

Great sobs pulsed through her for a couple of minutes, then she sniffed loudly.

“So you see, I couldn’t let them take another boy away from his family.”

She looked up at me, her dark hair curling in sweaty tendrils round her forehead, her liquid brown eyes full of trust.  I bent my head and I kissed her.  I kissed her in a way that I’d never kissed a girl before I was a zombie.  Our lips met, hers so soft compared with mine, rough and chaffed and scabby.  Her mouth opened and her tongue glided against my mouth, applying a gentle pressure until I let it slip inside.  I can’t say how it must have compared with her other experiences of kissing, though it was obvious she’d had some, but for me it was sublime.  Fireworks and flares went off in my gut and a burning sensation made my cock surge forward against my cut-offs.  I heard a low, guttural moaning, like an animal in pain, and took a moment to realize that it was me.  I held her close against my chest and through the thin fabric of our T-shirts, her nipples felt like rough pebbles.

Her arms slipped round behind me and started pulling up my shirt and I followed her lead, drawing her tank up to reveal the soft curve of her belly.  It made me catch my breath and I felt suddenly dizzy.

“Eve,” I managed to grunt, not knowing where to put my hands—onto the soft flesh now revealed or to carry on pulling the garment off her.

“Shhhh,” she whispered in my ear.  “Come.”

She stood up and tossed her top to one side.  Then, as I gawped, open-mouthed, at her small, perfect breasts, she grabbed my hand and led me up the stairs to her bedroom.  This room was junk food free but there were clothes all over the floor and the bed sheets were tangled and grimy.  Did I give a shit?  It was literally months, probably more than a year, since I’d been in a bed and here I was, diving into the softness with the most divine, half-naked angel.

For Sunday Reardon, once an A-list actress, leaving the spotlight, hectic schedules and tabloid gossips behind for the quiet tranquility of her hometown was the best decision she ever made. She’s surrounded by her family, her gardens and has everything she needs. Except the love of her life, a past co-star who offered so many promises years ago, only to break them all.

When she’s nominated for an Academy Award, Sunday’s world shifts into confusion and what-might-have-beens as she comes face to face with the one man who broke her heart…and still sets her body on fire.

“God, you feel so amazing in my arms. I wish you could come with me.”

Eyes closed, she nodded. “I can’t. I’m sorry.” Opening her eyes, she gazed at him. “Once the editing is finished, I need to get away from all this. I can’t deal with it any longer. And you know my dad’s having hip surgery. I need to help my mom.”

Shifting his stance, he slid his hands over the globes of her ass, urging her closer. “I know, babe. It’s okay. I won’t be gone long.”

She dug her fingers into the hair at the nape of his neck. “Nine months seems likes forever. You won’t forget me will you?”

A moan erupted from his throat as he dipped his head and latched his mouth onto hers. She savored him in her arms, revelling in his tongue dancing with hers. Passion, yearning, hunger, it was all there in his kiss.

Flexing his hips, Josh shifted his shaft to fit in the V between her legs. She gasped, her head falling back. Josh kissed his way down her neck, nibbling, biting, and driving the temperature a million times higher. She wanted to succumb to him now, to finally make love to him, but they couldn’t risk being caught.

He hauled her tighter, holding her so close she could barely breathe. But Sunday didn’t care. All she would ever need was this man in her arms. Feeling him against her, his body fevered against hers—nothing else mattered.

Josh lifted his head, his forest green eyes bore into hers. She could drown in his loving and hungry gaze. He knew her better than anyone else. While filming, they’d enjoyed so many secreted-away moments, revealing hopes and dreams and shared childhood stories imparting laughter. He was everything she’d ever need. And she couldn’t wait to tell the world.

But they couldn’t. Not yet.

“I know my leaving, since filming of my next movie is starting sooner, throws a kink in what we’d planned, but I promise, babe, I’ll be back as fast as I can. I’d rather be with you, starting our journey toward what I think will be a great future together. If I had any other choice—”

Understanding about commitments and responsibility, she covered his lips with her hand. “I know. It’s okay. We have time. We do. I’ll be waiting for you.”

He sighed. “I love you more than anything else.” He caressed her face. “I’ve waited so long for you already, it’ll be hell, but I know it will be worth it. Especially when we’re far away from prying eyes.”

She smiled, her heart booming with happiness. “And I love you.”

His cell phone vibrated. He yanked it from his pocket and groaned. “Damn, I have to go. They’re looking for me. Our flight leaves in forty-five.” His lips captured hers.

She poured all the love, hope, and belief of their relationship into the kiss. He had to come back. She couldn’t live without him now.

“I miss you already,” Josh whispered when he stepped back. His gaze travelled over her face as if memorizing every facet. Then he leaned down for his duffel bag. Straightening, he said, “I love you, Sunni.”

Tears in her eyes, she watched him walk toward the door. “I love you.”

He stared at her from across the room. Sunday wanted to rush over, wrap her arms around him and beg him not to go. But she couldn’t do that. She loved how dedicated and honest he was. There was no way she’d ever ask him to break his word.

With a last long, deep breath, he turned the door handle then exited the trailer. Feeling alone already, she sat in the vanity chair and gazed into the mirror. The love of her life had just walked out the door for war-torn Afghanistan. She worried for his safety but knew his people and the movie company would keep him safe while filming. All she could do was hold the love she had for him in her heart, and wait.
