Out Now! Grace’s Turmoil, by Peter Perrin #MFRWAuthor @PeterPerrin44 #SeasonedRomance

Debut novelist Peter Perrin has stopped by to share an interview with the lead character of his new release, Grace’s Turmoil, Book 1 in his series Not to Old for Love.

Here’s a peek into what makes Alfred tick:

What is your name and how old are you? I am Alfred Richard Nobel. I’m seventy-one years old.

Are you married? I was married for forty-five years, but my wife died tragically five years ago.

How would you describe your physical characteristics? I’m six feet five inches tall, solidly built, and barrel-chested. I have large hands and size twelve feet. So, I can only describe myself as imposing. But, I suppose some people see me as intimidating or threatening.

How would you describe your personality? I am confident, gregarious and extroverted. And I’m outgoing and sociable. The life and soul of the party.

Do you have a trait you dislike? Sadly I have to admit I do. It is my bad reaction to criticism, either real or perceived. I’m better than I used to be but I could still be better.

Do you generally tell the truth? If so, under what circumstances would you lie? Of course. As a former senior officer and a gentleman, it would be difficult for me to do anything else. But I would lie to protect someone or save their life. And I must confess that I have been economical and flexible with the truth with Grace during my time at The Grange retirement village. But that was just to avoid some difficult explaining and to avoid hurting her feelings.

How are your relationships with the opposite sex, generally?
Relationships, what relationships? Apart from my mother there has only ever been one woman in my life—my wife and soul-mate of forty-five-years, Sophie. So I’m not exactly experienced in respect to the fairer sex, and that has got me into trouble on occasion since I moved into The Grange.

How would you describe your dress style? Well you must remember that I spent a lot of time in the armed forces as an officer. So, for most of my life I dressed in a uniform, much the same as most people around me. When they leave the forces after a long time, some people can’t stand to wear a tie anymore, let alone a suit, and always dress very casual or even scruffy. But I’m just the opposite, as I love to dress smart, and wear a tie most of the time and a suit whenever I get the opportunity.

What are your favourite foods/drinks? Despite the wonderful food I was used to getting in the Officer’s Mess and in my post-RAF life, I’m a lover of plain food. So, steak, fish and chips, pies, pizzas – stuff like that. For desserts, I love anything with chocolate in or on it.  As for drinks, well I like lager, Bacardi White Rum, or Whisky (preferably a Glenfiddich single malt) and hate beer (especially Real Ale).

How would you describe your temper? Ah. I would have to confess it is unpredictable and volatile. In my RAF days I had to control it, especially as an officer. But those days are long since gone and I am more prone to losing my temper than I used to be.

Do you think your author has portrayed you accurately? I think he has done a reasonable job. But I suspect he has shown me in a less than favourable light in the way I deal with both Rose and Grace in Grace’s Turmoil.

Do you think readers will like or dislike you? I hope they will like me as I am at heart a nice guy. But I think the way my author has portrayed me may make some people look less than kindly upon me at times.

EXCERPT

Grace jabbed at the volume button on the remote control, turning up the sound on the television. She was trying to drown out the chatter which filled the palatial residents’ lounge. It had been like that for days, and she’d grown tired of it. Who would have thought the imminent arrival of one man could affect mature ladies like that?

One of the things which had appealed to her when she moved to The Grange retirement village was the lack of men. Yet a man who aroused feelings in her she didn’t want was going to add to their number.

Grace had caught a glimpse of him across The Lounge a few months ago, taking the standard tour of The Grange. He’d towered over the young woman he’d been with, and she’d guessed he was at least six-foot-five. Built like a tank, with a mass of wavy white hair and a snow-white beard, he’d reminded her of a polar bear. His presence had been overpowering and almost menacing. An image of him defending a seventeenth century mansion in days gone by had jumped into her mind.

Looking at him had sent a spontaneous burst of attraction rippling through her. It had caught her by surprise. Becoming attracted to anybody was the last thing she’d needed right then. Her divorce had been too recent and too painful. All she wanted was to focus on her painting to block out the pain. Although she hadn’t come there to look for a man, there was no denying how she’d reacted to the sight of him. She wondered how she would cope when they met. And she couldn’t help feeling he was going to have quite an impact on her life. Whether it would be a good impact or not was the million-dollar question. He might be the greatest thing since sliced bread! Or he could turn out to be a snake in the grass like her ex-husband.

Vows, Sex, and Other Ways to Celebrate Love

When I began writing The Harders, the first two books featured monogamous erotic romance. By the time I got to the third book, my characters had a different story to tell, and so I listened. Books 3 & 4 each feature two siblings who end up in polyamorous romances. For me, it wasn’t about writing the erotic content that titillated the senses that comes with the fantasy of having two or more sexual partners. Each of the people had their personal story to tell and I wanted to be true to it. One sister is bisexual, and I wanted her to find her love matches that would make her the happiest. The brother in the series was in love with a woman who had a male best friend that she loved. Unwilling to tell her she couldn’t continue a relationship of any sort with her best friend, they communicated to find out what the other wanted to see if they could also have a relationship.

As poly and ménage romance is becoming more mainstream, I wanted to write stories from my heart that people could relate to, not only for the erotic content, but to give voice to struggles and romantic relationships that are common. I believe there’s a ‘happy ever after’ for everybody.
Book 5 – Vows, Sex, and Other Ways to Celebrate Love – is a recap of all the couples in the series. We finally meet the parents of the family who are celebrating their long-term relationship in the way that suits them best. Although it throws a wrench into the party plans orchestrated by their children, love wins the day in the end. Here’s the blurb and an excerpt:

Blurb:

Love, laughter, and sex – the best ways to celebrate life.

The Harders don’t need monkeys, vegetables, chocolate, or sex toys to bend a few kinks into their well-laid party plans.  When the couple of the hour is a no-show, the siblings worry that their good intentions will have been for naught. Count on good old mom and dad to add a few surprises of their own, mixing a cocktail of love and laughter that no one will soon forget. Get ready to celebrate love, Harder style.

Excerpt:

Marnie wiggled her ass. Drake took hold of her hips, and guided his cock to her cunt. He slid home in a slow movement. She loved being filled by his thick cock, and she loved that Madison didn’t mind sharing Drake. They’d been in a relationship prior to Marnie’s coming along, and for a short time, Marnie had worried that Madison would get jealous. Her fears had been for naught. Since the moment they’d all gotten together, they’d been able to make it work.

Marnie licked Madison in time with Drake’s thrusts. As Drake thrust into her faster, she licked Madison’s clit at the same speed. With her left hand, she spread open Madison’s pussy, and inserted the middle finger of the other hand inside. She allowed Drake’s thrusts to push her into Madison’s clit and cunt.

Madison clenched the comforter in her hands, head thrashing side to side, her shouts becoming louder. “Oh, oh, oh!”

Cream gushed out and coated Marnie’s hand and tongue. She lapped it up, and Drake fucked her harder.

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” he announced with each thrust.

Marnie whipped her head up as she and Drake came together. Legs shaking, she collapsed onto her knees, face buried in Madison’s pussy once more. Madison pushed her head away as a second orgasm erupted. “Stop, stop…”

Marnie lifted her head, juice dripping from her chin, cum dripping from her cunt. Madison propped herself up on her elbows, chest heaving. “Amazing as always.”

“Agreed.” Marnie grinned at her, swiping the back of her hand over her chin. She glanced at the bedside table clock. “We’d better get going.”

“Yeppers.” Drake slapped Marnie on the ass, and she let out a yelp. “I’ve got dibs on the shower.”

“Oh come on,” Madison retorted. “You always call dibs on the shower.”

“But I always share,” Drake said.

Marnie laughed. “If we share, we’ll never make it to the party on time.” She made a shooing motion with her hand. “Now get.”

Drake stuck his tongue out at her, and high-tailed it out of the room.

Marnie sighed and pushed up to a stand. “You want to go next?”

Madison patted the bed beside her. “Sit for a second. I want cuddles.”

Marnie plopped down beside her, and ran her fingers through Madison’s hair. Love for her filled her heart once more. “I want to ask you something.”

Madison twirled a strand of Marnie’s chestnut hair around her finger. “What’s that?”

Marnie smiled. “Having you and Drake in my life, helping all of us with the party prep, got me to thinking.”

“Oh yeah?” Madison asked. “About what?”

“Like maybe we could have a ceremony some time. Or a party. Some kind of thing to celebrate all of us being together.” Her heart tripped in her chest at the admission. “I love you both so much and I want everyone to know it.”

Madison cupped her face in her hands. “I love you—we both do. I think it’s a wonderful idea. In fact…” Her voice trailed off.

Curious, Marnie held Madison’s face in her hands. “What?”

“I’ll tell you later, okay? We better get ready.” Madison pressed a soft kiss to Marnie’s lips.

Marnie grinned from ear to ear. “Fine. We’ll talk later.”

THE SUB CLAUSE

On December 25th, my writing partner, P.D. Cathal, and I have a Christmas release with eXtasy Books – The Sub Clause. Find out how Santa Clause and his Head Sub Elf celebrate finishing up the busiest night of the year by being naughty!

Blurb:

When you’re a ho-ho-ho for Jolly Old Saint Nick, not reading the fine print of your contract is a no-no-no.

The Naughty Toy Workshop is the kinky toy factory for people who hit Santa’s naughty list, and Kandy Kane loves her job as supervisor. The coveted position includes person-ally testing sex toys, observing those under her command as they research and test new items for this season’s fetish crowd, and the best perk—being The Big Guy’s submissive for the year.

Jolly Old St. Nick has never had a better sub than Kandy to supervise his naughty workshop or fulfill his most kinky desires. With glee, he can’t wait for the night of her performance review, where he has some special plans to reward his sub once the busiest night of the year is complete.

As the big night draws near, Kandy looks forward to her performance review with a mix of exhilaration and sadness. According to the sub clause in her contract, she has to choose her successor from one of the sub-elves in training in the workshop. Little does she know she’s misread the clause, and Santa is about to school her on the finer points of her contract.

Excerpt:

A wistful sigh escaped Kandy’s lips. Both subs would make excellent replacements for her. A lump formed in her throat, and she swallowed it back, refusing to shed tears over a fact she’d known since she’d taken the job. A sub clause in her contract with Santa stated that at the end of the year, she had to choose her successor. That knowledge had been the one thing that popped a hole in her balloon of elation over being chosen for the job last year when Santa’s last Alpha Sub retired.

She pushed the intercom button. “All right, Sweet—page me if you need anything. I’ll be going to—”

An emergency alarm sounded. All three women stared at each other in bewilderment.

“What the hell?” Kandy mumbled.

An automated voice filled the room. “Emergency in Fungeon Eleven. Emergency in Fungeon Eleven.”

“Oh great,” Kandy muttered. “Sweet—help Donna. I need to see what this is all about and take care of it before Saint Nick finds out. He’s got enough to worry about.” At the thought of her boss, Kandy’s heart rate sped up. She tried her best every day to serve him as his sub and workshop supervisor. Anything she could handle for him to make his job easier, she did.

Kandy suppressed a smile at the thought of Santa. While she’d enjoy seeing him again and being used by him—one of the best perks of her job—it was the busy season, and she wanted everything to run ship-shape. She gritted her teeth together to keep from grinning. They didn’t call him The Big Guy because his belly shook like a bowl full of jelly. Her cunt ached at the thought of his big, fat cock.

“Are you okay?” Sweet asked.

Kandy cleared her throat. “Yes, I’ve got to run.”

“Go,” Sweet said. “I’ve got it from here, Ma’am.”

“Thanks.” Kandy rushed from the room and sprinted down the hall to Fungeon Eleven, the testing room for new Sybians. She burst into the observation room and stared at the sight through the glass. A runaway Sybian that resembled a child’s rocking horse was vibrating around the room like an out-of-control mechanical bull, its test rider hanging on for dear life. Two other elves were chasing it around the room in an attempt to tame it. With its erratic action, neither elf could reach the power cord to unplug it.

Good thing she’s tied to it so she can’t fall off! Kandy’s brain went into overdrive. She whirled around and spied the emergency breaker panel at the back of the room. It would shut off power to this section of the workshop only. She bolted toward it and ripped off the front cover, then flipped the switch. The room descended into darkness, the alarm shut off, and the vibrating noise from the other room ceased.

Kandy breathed a sigh of relief, then glanced around when the emergency lights flickered on. The green glow of the lights cast eerie shadows all around. Kandy hurried into the testing room and helped the elves untie the sub from the horse. Then she unplugged the machine from the wall so they could restore power without the Sybian starting up again.

By the time she’d finished, the two elves—Lexie Latex and Sadie Sadist—had the other sub, Vivian Vibrato, untied from the machine and wrapped in a blanket. They held her close, murmuring words of comfort.

Kandy walked over to the trio and rubbed Vivian’s back. “Are you okay?”

Vivian nodded. “Yeah, just a little shaken up.”

All four women stared at each other, then burst into laughter.

Kandy patted her back and gave her a kiss on the top of the head. “I told Santa this idea needed more work. I’m glad you’re all right.” She straightened up and gestured to the control room. “Let’s get out of the testing area and back into the other room where we can look at the findings and see what went wrong.”

All three subs nodded in unison. Lexie and Sadie helped Vivian to her feet, then they followed Kandy into the control room. Kandy startled when the lights came on.

A deep voice spoke from the back of the room. “Ho, ho, ho… Who’s been a naughty elf?”

Excerpt:

Eden had been dreading this day since the moment her sister, Carol, had announced she was getting married. A wedding was supposed to be a happy occasion, a cause for celebration. But not when your sister was marrying the brother of your ex-best friend.

Eden had done a successful job of avoiding said ex-best friend for ten years, crying off any get-togethers, school reunions, and even her sister’s engagement and hen parties. Understandably, it had made her incredibly unpopular with Carol and their parents, but she’d had to put up with their displeasure for the sake of her own sanity.

Today, though, Janine or no Janine, Eden was going to her sister’s wedding. It was kind of crucial, really, given she was chief bridesmaid. She was just thankful that Janine hadn’t been asked to be a bridesmaid. That would have been problematic.

“I honestly don’t understand what happened between the two of you. What made you fall out so badly that you still want to avoid her?” Carol was asking, as the hairdresser put the finishing touches to her up-do, then settled her tiara on top of it, leaving the attached veil trailing down her back.

Well you wouldn’t, would you? Eden thought, trying hard not to let her emotions show on her face. You’ve never been confused about your sexuality and come on to your best friend, have you? But she kept quiet, determined not to ruin her sister’s special day.

“Can you even remember what happened?” Carol continued, thanking the hairdresser and standing up. She moved over to the full-length mirror in the room and examined herself from every angle. The hairdresser held up another mirror so the bride could see the back of her hair. She nodded.

“Yes,” Eden replied shortly, then added, “You look beautiful, sis. Really gorgeous.”

Inside her head, though, she was already reliving that fateful night.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Wilfred Hunt.
If there was a name to tip Hope into the abyss of despair she was hearing it spill from Madame Chambon’s lips now as the older woman directed Hope to take a seat in the reception room, presumably so Madame could loom oppressively over her.
With her hands on her ample, expensively padded hips, Hope’s benefactress—procuress, employer and gaoler were other monikers—sent Hope a beetling look that needed no interpreting: Regardless of Hope’s true feelings, Hope must project the required show of warmth and delight at being the chosen one.
Madame patted the side of her faux curls. Years of hot irons had reduced her hair to the texture of wool but her crowning glory these days was supplemented by the lustrous locks of those girls who dared cross her – before they were thrown back into the street from where most had come.
Nevertheless, Hope had to make her resistance clear. Surely Madame who knew her history would understand her loathing for this man, above all others. “I shan’t do it,” she whispered. There was little evidence of the willful child and wild adolescent who’d been the despair of her family. “I won’t—”
Outside, the noise of the traffic rumbling over the cobbles and the shrill calls of competing vendors settled upon the tense silence. Madame Chambon’s other girls, ranged around the sumptuously appointed room on red velvet upholstered banquettes, watched the exchange with prurient fascination. Hope knew it had been a calculated ploy of Madame’s to conduct her interview in public so that Hope would serve as an example to them.
No one crossed Madame Chambon.
The shrill cry of a fishmonger caused Madame to look pointedly out of the window. With something between a smile and a sneer, she smoothed a Marcel wave. “Is that where you plan to return, Hope? The gutter?” Her nose twitched and in the sunlight that filtered into the room, the grooves chiselled between mouth and chin were thrown into harsh relief, highlighted rather than hidden by the thick powder she used to conceal her age.
Madame Chambon’s comfort, now and into retirement, depended on obedient girls. Hope knew that as well as anyone. She’d had to bury her rebellious streak just to ensure food in her belly.
The Frenchwoman raised a chiselled brow and began to pace slowly in front of her girls. A painter with an eye for beauty would have been ecstatic at capturing such a spectacle on canvas. The discerning young man about town who visited 56 Albemarle Street was frequently rendered ecstatic by the range of delights Madame Chambon’s girls offered in addition to the visual.
“You forget yourself, Hope. I put a roof over your head and deck you out as handsomely as Mr Charles Worth ever did for his most discerning customer.” There was acid in Madame Chambon’s tone. “But for me, you’d be starving and glad of the pennies you could trade for a grubby stand-up encounter in a dark alley.” Madame Chambon thrust out her bosom and breathed through her nose, her response a calculated warning to the other girls arranged in various languid poses about the ornately decorated reception room that intransigence would not be tolerated.
“Mr Hunt has requested you.” She paused and when Hope remained silent, though her stance and expression left no one in any doubt as to her horror regarding this enforced assignation, went on. “Remember what I told you—what I tell all my girls when they first come here? The past must be forgotten the moment you step over my threshold. You are reborn, remodelled, refashioned into the most exquisite delectation of womanhood. A marquess, a prince, is well recompensed for the tidy sum he hands over in order to enjoy your sparkling wit, to converse with you in French, or if he chooses, on philosophy…to enjoy your charms…and,” she added significantly, “your gracious hospitality and tender ministrations to his needs. That is our agreement and you are no different. If Mr Hunt wishes you, Hope, to attend him at his residence then you will go.”
Faith, one of the kinder girls, patted Hope’s arm in silent solidarity. Hope didn’t expect any of them to speak up in her defence. Not when they all relied on Madame Chambon as much as she did to provide them with the necessities of life. Anything more than that was part of a strict contract that indentured a girl for life unless she was able to secure a generous benefactor to settle Madame’s severance bill. The fine clothes were part of the charade, necessary to entice a more elite clientele. Hope’s exquisite wardrobe did not belong to her though she’d have forsaken all the dupion silk and Spitalfields lace for the freedom of the gutter and to be mistress of her own destiny – and her body – if she could only be sure of a plate of gravy and potatoes every second day.
Closing her eyes, she hung her head, the carefully coiffed curls that fell forwards brushing against her tear-streaked cheeks. It was as well that they not be in evidence. Tears, weakness, vulnerability were like a red rag to a bull where Madame Chambon was concerned.
“How long…do I have to prepare myself?” She was not so stupid she couldn’t admit defeat when there was no alternative. Obduracy was beaten out of one, but tears ensured a girl got the very worst next assignment. Their clients weren’t all marquesses and princes, though they did require a very fat pocket book.
“Tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow.” Hope repeated it in a leaden tone, and stared at her hands, clasped in her lap; white-knuckled. As white as the rabbit-fur that edged her fashionable black-and-white striped satin cuirass. Hope had the tall, slim figure suited to the scandalously tight tie-back skirts that were all the rage, the back flowing into a train adorned with elaborate swags and trimmed with bows. She’d turned heads the length of Oxford Street as she’d promenaded along the pavement following a walk through Hyde Park earlier that afternoon. In fact, for the first time in two years, she’d almost felt happy as she’d pretended a sense of freedom in the afternoon sun, blocking her mind to the prison to which she was returning.
She drew in her breath and forced herself to be brave, knowing the punishment she’d invite for daring to speak her mind. “Please tell Mr Hunt I will see him again under sufferance.”
Madame Chambon’s voice was surprisingly caramel. “Well then, now that you have made your objection clear, Hope, you will be pleased to hear that Mr Hunt’s desires are not only motivated by fond memories of your no-doubt mutually satisfying congress. I believe he wishes to acquaint you with news of your family.”
Hope hid her shock. “I have no family.” With care, she modified her tone so it was as leaden as before though emotion roiled close to the surface.
“Not even a sister?”
Hope raised her chin. Here was the chink and Madame knew it. The woman did her research.
Aware that the other girls who surrounded her were tense with anticipation, Hope struggled not to respond. Camaraderie existed at surface level but one never knew when it might profit one to have the dirt on a fellow prostitute. It was, clearly, another reason Madame Chambon had chosen to make this conversation public.
“Mr Hunt will see you at nine tomorrow evening,” said the so-called Frenchwoman who, it was whispered, was from the gutters of Lambeth, not Paris. “At his apartments in Duke Street. Now go and prepare yourself for Lord Farrow. Married to a monolith like the venerable Lady Farrow, he likes his girls vivacious and free-spirited. There’ll be less coin in your pocket if you sully the transaction with that long face, Hope.”

Twenty-six years later Beverley was delighted to receive her first publishing contract from Robert Hale (UK) for a romance in which she ensured her heroine was saved from drowning in the icy North Sea.
Since 2009 Beverley has written more than thirteen historical romances, mostly set in England during the early nineteenth century. Mystery, intrigue and adventure spill from their pages and if she can pull off a thrilling race to save someone’s honour – or a worthy damsel from the noose – it’s time to celebrate with a good single malt Scotch.
Beverley lives with her husband, two daughters and a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy the size of a pony opposite a picturesque nineteenth century lunatic asylum. She also writes Africa-set adventure-filled romances tarring handsome bush pilot heroes, and historical romances with less steam and more sexual tension, as Beverley Eikli.

About the Boxed Set:

Kryssie Fortune’s holiday series, Heroes of Westhorpe Ridge, is now available in a convenient e-boxed set!

Marriage, Mobsters, and the Marine:

Abigail Montgomery, a small town schoolteacher with zero self-confidence, dreams of the Dickensian Christmas her family never enjoyed. Each month she attends a masked BDSM club, but her next visit will be her last. If she doesn’t marry within the next year, her brother won’t inherit Montgomery Hall. Desperate, she advertises for a husband.

Jared Armstrong, a former Marine sharpshooter and occasional Dom needs $125,000 to get his family out of a hole. His solution–to marry Abigail Montgomery for her money. His only regret is his wife won’t accept his spanking lifestyle.

Gradually, Abigail comes to dream of making their marriage real, but she promised Jared a divorce two years after their wedding. Can they share some Christmas magic as their relationship faces extortion threats, a kidnapping, and an attempted murder? Or will Jared break her heart when he walks away?

Sex, Scandal, and the Sheriff:
Jasmine Stewart (Jazz to her friends) falls for the blond stranger when he spanks and seduces her at a Washington soiree. Later, when she discovers her flatmate is trying to draw her into a spy ring, she goes to the authorities. The ensuing publicity costs her her job, her security, and her future. Starting over in Westhorpe Ridge is her only option.

Sean Mathews, former SEAL and Westhorpe Ridge’s sheriff, can’t forget the woman he spanked when he visited Washington, but he thinks she’s a spy. When she turns up in Westhorpe Ridge, he tries everything to make her leave town. Despite their misunderstandings, though, they can’t keep their hands off each other.

As Year’s Eve looms, the spy ring resurfaces. Jazz will need all of Sean’s SEAL prowess to survive. But because his wounded leg cost him his speed in the water, will it be enough?

Desire, Deceit, and the Doctor:
Twelve years ago, Mandy Devlin moved away from her friends and family–under threat. If she returned in the next ten years or told anyone who fathered her baby, her boyfriend’s great-aunt would bankrupt her family. She’s a single mom who dreams of her lost love and a good spanking. When she’s finally free to return to Westhorpe Ridge, the last person she expects to see is Adam–the man she loved and lost so long ago.

Dr. Adam Montgomery doesn’t know he has a son. Thanks to his great-aunt’s will, he has nine months to find a bride or he loses Montgomery Hall and the fifteen million dollars she left him. Although he seduces Mandy on his first night home, he still believes she betrayed him twelve years ago. No way would he marry a woman like her.

As Valentine’s Day looms, someone tries to kill Mandy. Is Adam trying to get rid of her? Or can Mandy trust him to protect them?

Note: All of the books in this set were previously released as single titles.

Excerpt from Marriage, Mobsters, and the Marine
FOR ABIGAIL, CHRISTMAS felt like the loneliest time of the year. Once her father died, her mother had drifted through life, uncaring. There’d been no presents or decorations, not even a special dinner. Adam had often stayed at college, saying he needed to keep on top of his studies. Abigail had bottled her sorrow, not even telling her brother how much she ached to sing carols around a family tree or cook a Dickensian Christmas dinner for the people she loved.
Abigail still enthused over the things she had planned for her class. “I’m pushing for a field trip to Red Heart Canyon where the Cherokee nation once gathered to celebrate the winter solstice. Local history needs preserving. You see, some yahoos took exception to their temple ceremony and massacred half the gathered women and children. History records it as another land grab by the European settlers.”
Jared frowned. “That’s rough.”
“The way we treated Native Americans sucked,” Abigail agreed. “Rumor has it Red Heart Canyon is haunted by the women the settlers killed. There’s an old mine shaft cut into the side of the canyon, but no one ever found any gold. On a more cheerful note, Mandy’s going ahead with her costume party for Ben, followed by another one with a sit-down dinner for the adults. My class is real excited about it. It’s the Saturday before Christmas, but you need to plan your costume. I’ve got mine already.”

About the Author:

Kryssie Fortune writes the sort of hot sexy books she loves to read. If she can sneak a dragon into her paranormal books she will. Her paranormal heroes are muscular werewolves, arrogant Fae, or BDSM loving dragons. Kryssie likes her contemporary heroes ex-military and dominant. Her heroines are kick ass females who can hold their own against whatever life – or Kryssie – throws at them.

Kryssie’s pet hates are unhappy endings, and a series that end on a cliff hanger.

Her books are all stand alone even when part of series. Plot always comes before sex, but when her heroines and heroes get together, the sex is explosive and explicit. One review called it downright sensual.

The Prison of The Angels by Janine Ashbless On Tour #MFRWAuthor #Giveaway

CONVERSATION WITH A DEMON

We’re excited to have a visitor today – the demon who stars in the latest release from Janine Ashbless, The Prison of the Angels, has stopped by to answer a few questions!

Don’t forget to enter the Rafflecopter at the end, and stop by the other tour posts for more chances to enter!

INTERVIEW WITH AZAZEL

Your name:  Azazel
The book you’re in:  The Prison of the Angels (Vol.3 of The Book of the Watchers)
Your author’s name:  Janine Ashbless
Your role: The fallen angel released by Milja Petak. Her demon lover. The great enemy of the Heavenly Host. The harbinger of the Apocalypse.

What was your favorite part of being a character in this book?

I love Milja! She saved me from my prison … But then she betrayed me … but then she saved me again … I would fight the whole world for her, but I wish she would stop being so complicated.

Do you get along with your fellow characters?

Hah! I love Milja, but she has this other would-be lover called Egan – a mere human at that – who thinks he can lay claim to her heart. We don’t get on. Well, I enjoy teasing him; he’s so easy to provoke!

Can you share one unusual or funny fact about you readers might not guess?

When I first started interacting with the human species, tens of thousands of years ago, my preferred form was that of a gigantic black goat. That is still remembered in a twisted way – look at the Tarot card of The Devil.

Do you think your author has portrayed you accurately?

I do not think she emphasized enough how tolerant and merciful I was, throughout, to mortals who got in my way. I have been extremely merciful to Egan, and I do not get enough credit for that.

What was the hardest thing you had to do?

Learn to understand Milja. Seriously … the last time I was free was five thousand years ago. Women back then were honored if I chose them as my lovers. They were proud to bear my children. Women now? They are so difficult to please! They want choice, and respect … I have had a lot to learn.

What problems do you have to face and overcome in your life?

Five thousand years imprisoned in a cave, tied to rock, parched and starving and unable to move, all because I’d had the temerity to take mortal lovers. That injustice has lit a rage in my heart that cannot be quenched.

What are you afraid of?

Being imprisoned again. The archangels Michael and Raphael are plotting against me.

If you came with a warning label, what would it say?

“Hotter than Hell”

What do you think readers will think of you?

Why should I care what anyone thinks of me? I am that which I am. All of Heaven is lined up in enmity against me, and I will not bow down or give in. So, readers? Pah!

Have you appeared in more than one book by this author? Did things get easier or harder for you?

I appeared in all three books in this series. There would have been no series without me! Ashbless made me suffer from start to finish, but let me tell you; freedom with any amount of suffering is better than no freedom at all.

EXCERPT

From The Prison of the Angels:

The cold water flashed like white fire over every inch of my skin. It burnt my eyeballs and my lips and the inside of my throat, and beyond the white fire was a darkness so immense that it swallowed me whole.

I fell forever.

Something grabbed my wrist. Something so hot that it boiled away the darkness, so that there was suddenly light flashing in my eyes. I felt myself grabbed up bodily and lifted. I felt heat against my lips, blowing fire into my frozen lungs. I saw the wooden posts of a flight of steps, and then I pitched forward onto hands and knees in the shallow snow, choking up pond-water. In front of my blurred vision an inchoate swirl of darkness poured up the steps onto the lit porch and then disappeared. Unseen, something slammed against the door, a knock that made the house shake.

I was on the ground beneath the back porch of John’s house, I realized, shuddering.

Mama. Oh Mama. The thought seemed to come from nowhere.

Three times the knock sounded, and on the third the door burst open—outward, onto the porch—to reveal Egan in the lit room within; shaven, shirtless, and frozen mid-lunge for what I could only assume was a weapon of some sort.

He stared.

I tried to cry out.

“Milja?”

Grabbing his pistol he ran out barefoot onto the porch and looked around for enemies that were not there. Then he clattered down and pulled me up into his arms. I pressed my face to his neck and he carried me up the steps and over the threshold—not like a bride, but like a child he could hold tight against his torso, his wrists locked under my thighs. His skin blazed against mine. He hefted me into the kitchen and propped my ass on the table in front of the range.

“What the hell?” he demanded in a low fierce voice, sweeping locks of sodden hair back from my face. My hat seemed to have disappeared. “What happened, Milja? What were you doing out there?”

“Ice. I fell in the lake.” My jaw chattered. It was obvious I was telling the truth—I was soaked from head to toe, and after clasping me so close he wasn’t much drier himself.

“Feckssake, woman!” he growled. “What the hell were you thinking of?” He shucked off my coat, which lifted a sodden ton from my shoulders, then stooped to pull my boots off; ice-water spilt all over the floor.

I tried to strip off my gloves but my fingers weren’t capable of gripping anything.

“Come here, come here,” he said softly from where he knelt at my feet, grabbing my wrists and peeling away the useless gloves. He pressed my hands on either side of his warm neck, holding them there. They must have felt like ice-blocks to him, but he didn’t wince.

He looked like a knight kneeling before his queen, I thought. I could feel his pulse.

“I’ll go get towels, Milja. Are you going to be okay a sec?”

I nodded, though he probably couldn’t see it through the shuddering. He rose and hurried off, leaving me with the radiant warmth of the stove. I thought I should probably get the rest of my clothes off, but even after I struggled with my fly zipper my jeans seemed determined to cling to my bum-cheeks.

I heard the back door bang shut and I flinched.

Azazel?

Had he been gathering himself to come get Egan? Was he the one who had saved me from the black waters? Where was he now?

Egan came back in carrying armfuls of towels. “Alright?”

“I’m okay,” I told him, smiling through my shudders. He was still shirtless, and I could see the faint Ethiopian scars on his arm and chest.

He wrapped my hands one at a time in a towel, chaffed them dry, and then set them deliberately against the hard, hot wall of his torso.

Oh God.

Then he slipped all the buttons on my thick flannel shirt—the one I’d chosen this morning precisely because it wasn’t provocative or distracting—and he only slowed when he realized I was wearing just a bra-top underneath. My nipples stood in shamefully hard points under the stretch cotton. I tried to wriggle out of the long tartan sleeves of my shirt on my own, to spare his blushes, but everything clung like a freezing cold second skin and he had to help.

The shallow slash on my forearm wasn’t bleeding anymore, but each brush of his fingers felt like hot coals.

My wet garment made a slap as it struck the floor.

He draped a towel around my shoulders and another over my head. He started rubbing the water from my face and hair and scalp, his movements precise and gentle. For long moments I was buried in a soft darkness. I reached out, blind, to put my hands back on his bare ribs. I could feel his heart pounding beneath them, like a beast pacing a cage.

I have no idea when it all changed for him. When his grueling self-denial simply fell apart, like a garment worn and washed until the fabric was weakened beyond all use. All I knew was that he dropped the towel off my damp head, cupped my face in both his hands and—absolutely without warning—kissed me.

Blurb:

Milja Petak’s world has fallen apart.

Her lover, the fallen angel Azazel, has cast her aside in rage and disgust. The other contender for her heart, the Catholic priest Egan Kansky, was surrendered back into the hands of the shadowy Vatican organization, Vidimus, after sustaining life-threatening injuries.

She has killed and she has betrayed. She is alone, homeless, and at the end of her tether – torn apart by guilt and the love she has lost.

But neither Heaven nor its terrifying representatives on Earth have finished with Milja.

Both her lovers need her in order to further their very different plans, and both passionately need her, though they may try to deny it.

Milja is once again forced into a series of choices as she uncovers the secrets Heaven has been guarding for centuries. But this time it is not just her heart at stake, or even the fate of a fallen angel.

This time, the choices she makes will change everything.

This time it’s the End of the World.

The Prison of the Angels is the third in the acclaimed Book of the Watchers trilogy, following on from Cover Him with Darkness, and In Bonds of the Earth.

Author bio:

Janine Ashbless is a writer of fantasy erotica and steamy romantic adventure. She likes to write about magic and myth and mystery, dangerous power dynamics, borderline terror, and the not-quite-human.

Buyer beware! If you like dark romance and a hard-won Happily Ever After, try “Cover Him with Darkness,” “Heart of Flame,” or “The King’s Viper.” If you prefer challenging erotica, go for “Red Grow the Roses” or “Named and Shamed” instead. All her other books lie somewhere on the spectrum between.

Janine has been seeing her books in print ever since 2000. She’s also had numerous short stories published by Black Lace, Nexus, Cleis Press, Ravenous Romance, Harlequin Spice, Storm Moon, Xcite, Mischief Books, and Ellora’s Cave among others. She is co-editor of the nerd erotica anthology ‘Geek Love’.

Born in Wales, Janine now lives in the North of England with her husband and two rescued greyhounds. She has worked as a cleaner, library assistant, computer programmer, local government tree officer, and – for five years of muddy feet and shouting – as a full-time costumed Viking. Janine loves goatee beards, ancient ruins, minotaurs, trees, mummies, having her cake and eating it, and holidaying in countries with really bad public sewerage.

Her work has been described as:

“Hardcore and literate” (Madeline Moore) and “Vivid and tempestuous and dangerous, and bursting with sacrifice, death and love.” (Portia Da Costa)

Out Now: Chasing Sisyphus, by J L Peridot @JLPeridot #giveaway #MFRWAuthor

Mood Boards: Basilica City —
The World of “Chasing Sisyphus”

Basilica.

Seedy. Magnificent. Dangerous.

Those grimy big city vibes. The neon jungle with glass and concrete peaks like mountains over the horizon. Electric blue and magenta dreams, red and orange and that awful green that would make you sick if it didn’t signal a safe door you could walk through to get off the streets.

The urban sprawl is split in half by the Legion River, named after the brave Nova Legion troops who fought in the Zaddash War. During the day, it’s for tourists and pleasure cruisers. Late nights and early mornings, barges transport cargo to and from the resource towns in Outer Basilica. Trains run too — depends how you like to travel.

On the south side is the Memorial District. At least that’s what they called it before the city ripped itself apart. Now it’s lovingly known as “junkie town”, reeking of puke and piss and garbage. No place for a beautiful woman and respectable guy built like a brick shithouse.

The capital of Planet Basilica thrives under the thumb of high society. Home to the finest healthcare in the galaxy, attracting the wealthy as well as the merely affluent from all over. Spend your money, steal someone else’s money, it doesn’t matter.

In Basilica City, you play your cards right and you can have whatever you want.

But play them too right and someone will want you dead.

Chasing Sisyphus excerpt:

He couldn’t make out her face, but he sure noticed her tight silhouette as she walked by the Nova Legion statue. She seemed a little upmarket for the scene and, come to think of it, he didn’t remember seeing her leave. She was probably still there, waiting under the streetlamp like a femme fatale in those movies Keats kept on mute at his desk on a tiny TV.

Somewhere nearby, a door shut. At any other time, it would have been another pip of noise in a filthy district. But it was too quiet around here. Too few people to make a sound like that seem normal. Anywhere else, it would be the sound you shut out. Here, to Rhys, it was a dog whistle.

“Keats, I heard something,” he said. “Gonna go check it out.”

“Not a good idea, Carver. There’s a chase at the north end. Cap’s called the cars in. You got no backup.”

“Don’t need it. If the kid’s still here, he’s alone.”

“You’ll be in deep shit if the boss finds out. How do you even know it’s him?”

“We’ve been watching this guy for weeks. I got a feeling he’s onto us. Or, if not us, then someone else who wants him out of action.”

“C’mon, Carver—”

“Keats, I just know, all right? I’m going in. You got eyes on me or not?”

“Jeez! All right…where you heading?”

“Building two thirty-four on the corner. Going in via the south entrance.”

“CCTV’s busted on the west side, but I got eyes on the north exit. Actually, building report says the east and west fire escapes are busted, too. You keep the south door covered and your boy ain’t going nowhere.”

Weapon in hand, Rhys crept inside and shut the door behind him. It was dark. The only light came in from the street through gap-tooth blinds and dusty windows. It took a second to adjust.

Broken floor tiles and peeling wallpaper lined the foyer. A lamp hung from a wall, still intact. This might have been a nice place once, before the city’s worst years. Now it stood waiting for the official condemnation that would put it out of its misery. Like the rest of this district.

The stairs creaked under his weight, the ceiling creaked above him.

“Keats, we got residents here?”

“Negative. Power and water were cut off twelve years ago. Why, you see something?”

Gunshots exploded above. No time to answer. Rhys popped the safety and legged it up the stairs.

* * * *

Adria hadn’t counted on the tripwire. This kid knew someone would follow him home one day. He’d strung a line of empty soup cans across the apartment hallway. When she kicked that out, a hefty serving of iced water came down squarely on her head. Gooseflesh prickled her neck and shoulders. The muscles in her jaw seized in the cold. Against the shock, she scrambled to her feet, fired up to catch the stomping and crashing in the other room before it got away.

A figure ran past the doorway.

“Stop!” she yelled.

It rounded the corner. Adria gave chase.

She scanned the room. It was dim at best, thanks to the streetlights from outside, but she saw enough. Computer equipment and various peripherals lay strewn across the floor, some still plugged into a transportable battery in the corner, emitting tiny lights and numbers.

A window slammed shut. The glass shattered. Shards crunched and ground beneath Adria’s boots as she hurried in pursuit of her fleeing target.

When she stepped out onto the fire escape, two hands rammed her into the ladder. The whole balcony shuddered from the collision. Pain flared down her shoulder, but she kept her grip on the gun. She held it up with her good arm and fired.

Two shots.

Missed.

She stumbled backward, clutching her burning shoulder, but the railing crumbled under her weight. Adria grabbed what was left of it with both hands as her footing slipped away.

It looked like a four-storey drop. Maybe five if she’d miscounted. Her legs dangled over thin air while from below came the clatter of broken pieces of railing, along with her gun, as they hit the concrete.

Overhead, her target stomped away on the rungs and disappeared onto the roof.

Adria’s shoulder raged. She tried to pull herself up, but couldn’t take the weight with just one good arm. Her feet kicked out, searching for a foothold, but the grill beneath had long withered away to slivers of rust and sharp edges.

Water and sweat dripped into her eyes. She swiped them helplessly on her sleeves and winced as rough seams grazed the skin. The railing creaked in her clammy grip. She could always let go. If she timed her landing right, maybe she’d get away with a broken ankle and a tetanus shot. Surely it only looked like a long way down.

Then she heard a gunshot from inside the apartment.

Chasing Sisyphus blurb:

Bounty hunter Adria Yuan is hot on the trail of her final hit: a notorious hacker wanted by the city’s elite. With the reward, she can pay for her brother’s surgery and finally get out of Basilica City. Trouble is, her line of work’s not exactly legal, and she’s barely staying ahead of the cops who want her target, too.

Detective Rhys Carver may be a little unorthodox, but he’s a good cop. Born and bred in Basilica, he does his part to keep his city clean. As clean as it gets, at least. And with Adria suddenly in his sights, it’s going to take more than falling in love for him to let her go.

As the pair close in on their mark, they are unwittingly drawn into a high profile conspiracy that could thrust the whole of Basilica into chaos. Can Adria and Rhys set aside their differences, and their desires, to save the only home they know?

Excerpt:

In this scene, Pietas performs a ritual with the help of his friend, Six.
Pietas’s long hair, full of static electricity from the wind and storm, settled over his shoulders and adhered to his neck. He could not lift his arms to gather it himself but he did not want the others to see he needed help nor did he want Six fretting over it.
The man blamed himself for the injury. Yes, Six had bound Pietas. It had been Six’s duty to do so. In truth, those who had placed Pietas inside the pod and refused to release him were to blame, but no matter how often he reminded Six of that, the ghost refused to relinquish his guilt.
Six dug into his pockets. “I think I have another strip.” They had torn several from a ragged shirt. Six wore the biggest piece around his neck. He set down his pack and opened it.
“Six,” Pietas hissed. He did not turn his head, but looked toward the others. “Leave it!”
The ghost glanced up at him, then the immortals, waiting ahead. “You want the women messing with your hair? Is that it?”
He closed his eyes, counting to ten. To a hundred would not erase this embarrassment. “No.” When he beheld Six, the man had the discourtesy to smirk. “Don’t look at me in that tone of voice.”
The man chuckled. “We should have cut your hair before we set out.” He rummaged through his kit, which held all Six owned when he’d been abandoned on this world. Little more than survival gear.
“I never cut it except in ritual.”
“I know.” Six withdrew a boning knife used for it.
Before every battle, Pietas performed the solemn rite to affirm superior strength and prowess. The ghost had been the first human to see it carried out, albeit the first half from a distance while hiding.
Six stood. “Maybe you could perform it now.”
“How like you to see the easy solution. But there are a few elements missing. No fire. No water. No mask.” He gestured toward the oncoming storm. “No time.”
“Haven’t you ever heard of pretending?”
“One cannot ‘pretend’ a ritual.”
“What a boring childhood you must’ve had. Why not?”
Pietas opened his mouth to answer. Shut it again.
Six lifted one eyebrow. “Do you want to go into that dark hole and meet up with your people without performing it?”
“No, but there’s no time.”
“Rain’s coming.” Six jerked a thumb toward the forest. “Like I said, you have to go in there or you won’t reunite with your people. Are you going to stand out here making excuses, or do this?”
“Ghost, this ritual is important. It deserves respect.”
Blah, blah, blah. That storm is bearing down on us.” A few drops of rain splattered them both. “See? Or maybe you’d rather have your sister help you with your hair every morning.”
“Fine!” With a resigned sigh, Pietas capitulated. “How do you propose we ‘pretend’ my ritual?”
Six tucked the knife into his belt and held out his cupped hands. “This is fire.”
Pietas hesitated.
“Come on, Pi.” Six wagged his cupped hands. “This stuff is hot.”
“Of course it is.” A smile slipped onto his face and refused to leave. “It’s pretend fire. That’s the hottest kind.”
“Remember, you do this naked. Unzip your robe or whatever it is you’d wear.”
Pietas mimed removing his silk robe. He plucked one hair and laid it across Six’s hands, feeding it to the fire. “As fire has victory over life, so I have victory over my enemies.” He passed a hand through the imaginary flame. As he had in the real ritual, he hissed at the scorching heat. He cupped his hands over Six’s, a symbolic end to the flames. “I am powerful, as fire is powerful.”
“Next is air, right?”
“Yes.” He lifted both hands, made fists, and yanked them back. “I own the wind. I prevail over the breath of my enemies.”
Again, Six cupped his hands. “Water.”
“Water submits to my presence the way enemies submit to my will.” He scooped his hands into the bowl, lifted his arms and pictured the liquid dripping down them. “The blood of my enemies trickles into the pool of time, is absorbed, and forgotten.” He bent and pushed both hands through his hair. “My mind is clear. I do not waver.”
Six held his hands flat, waist high. “The pond.”
Pietas ducked as if to submerse himself, then rose, throwing back his head. “My body submits to my will. No pain defeats me. No fear touches me.” He brushed his hands down the length of his body. “My will is absolute. I am bigger than any fear. I prevail in every circumstance. I face every foe. I vanquish every enemy. I overcome. I am indomitable. I am invincible.”
“Black face paint for the mask.” Six held out his hands.
The ceremonial mask represented a splash of blood across his face received during battle. Dipping two fingers of each hand into the bowl, Pietas outlined a bandit’s mask up over his dark eyebrows to the area beneath his eyes. He brushed his fingertips over his eyelids and met Six’s gaze.
Finding a mixture of awe and respect threw him out of the moment. He faltered, unable to recall what came next.
Six offered the knife hilt first.
The man had seen the ritual performed once, from a distance, yet he’d remembered each step. Six wouldn’t have known the next part was performed by Pietas’s sister if no trusted partner or friend was at hand. The time Six had seen it done, Pietas had not yet considered him either one.
How wrong he had been. The man was more than both.

Bringer of Chaos: The Origin of Pietas

The Sempervian Saga (Book 1)

Why should Pietas end the war with humans?

His people are winning, yet they insist on peace talks. The Ultra people want to grant humans a seat on the Council. Pietas ap Lorectic, Chancellor of the High Council, War Leader and First Conqueror, disagrees. What’s best for mortals is oppression, control, and if necessary, elimination.
Pietas seethes with rage at the idea of human equality. Humans might have created Ultras, but the creation has far surpassed the creator. Humans die. Ultras are reborn, no matter how grievous the injury. They have no equals.
His people permit him no choice. He must attend these insipid peace talks on Enderium Six and what’s worse, be polite. To humans.
When a human special ops warrior is killed in battle, he’s resurrected in a secret process and inducted into the Ghost Corps. He’s given enough strength to perma-kill immortal Ultras. Ghosts are the most hated and feared of warriors.
When the ghost entraps and captures Pietas at the peace talks, the two begin a long journey toward Sempervia, an isolated and forgotten world. Once there, Pietas is marooned and the ghost abandoned alongside him. The two must either fight to perma-death, or join forces to survive.

As Pietas comes to trust the human, an unlikely and awkward friendship begins. Until he discovers how ghosts are resurrected…

Guest Contance Bretes: Jade’s Redemption #MFRWAuthor #RomanticSuspense

Today we’re thrilled to welcome Constance Bretes, here to share about her latest release, Jade’s Redemption.

We know you’ll want to grab this one! And don’t you just love the beauty she lives in the midst of? Plus she’s running a contest – be sure to check out her author information at the bottom of this post to find out how to enter!

BLURB

Jade’s Redemption

He’s an overworked police chief, and she’s a disgraced cop. Can he rescue her from her own depths of hell without losing his heart to her in the process?

Someone is kidnapping newborn infants and selling them to the highest bidder. Police Chief Patrick Carter has his hands full investigating the case. To complicate matters, he’s short on staff.

Jade Harlowe has secrets, ones that she vowed no one would ever know. She used to be a police officer, but when a tragedy occurred—one that everyone held her responsible for—she resigned and moved to another state to start over, accepting a job as a dispatcher for the police, fire, and ambulance departments.

When Patrick discovers Jade’s past police experience he offers her a job on the force. He needs help working the kidnapping cases, and Jade previously solved a similar case, so she could be a valuable asset. But will they be able to fight the attraction that’s sizzling between them? Something that could be very distracting if they can’t control it.

The clock is ticking. They have to find those babies and prevent more from being taken. But a very nosy news reporter may compromise everything if she digs deep enough to uncover Jade’s past.

Neither Patrick nor Jade thought they had room for each other in their lives, but working so closely together makes it impossible to deny the chemistry. Can Patrick break through the wall Jade has built up around her, or will her past finally catch up with her and she loses everything once again?

EXCERPT

When Jade arrived at the police station that morning, she saw that Patrick’s vehicle was already there. Why was he in the office so early?

She scanned her ID to get into the communication call room. She acknowledged the two dispatchers still on duty, then grabbed her mug and went to the break room. After pouring herself a cup of coffee, she headed back. On her way, she greeted two officers and walked by Patrick’s opened office door.

“Jade, in my office. I need to talk to you,” Patrick said.

“Okay.” She didn’t report to him, so why did he want to see her? She entered his office.

“Close the door,” he commanded, his voice terse.

She closed the door and sat in the chair in front of his desk.

“There was another kidnapping last night. Here’s the file on both kidnappings and files from other known cases to cross-reference. I need you to investigate the cases and try to get these babies back and prevent another one from being taken. I want you to go out into the street, ask questions, get in people’s faces, and help solve this crime.”

“Um, not an officer, Patrick.”

“You are now. If you’ll stand, I’ll swear you in.” He opened the desk drawer to get the book out.

“You can’t make me an officer, just like that.”

“Yes, I can. I know you were an officer in Oklahoma City, and I know your credentials are up-to-date. You are certified and ready to be an officer. All I need to do is swear you in.”

“You checked up on me?” Jade asked, her voice faltering.

“No, at first, I called the Oklahoma City Police to find out about the kidnapping case you mentioned. In the course of my discussion with the chief, I asked if he knew you, which he said he did.”

“Then you know what happened there.”

“No, they couldn’t tell me due to your non-disclosure stipulation.”

“Then you shouldn’t hire me.”

“I’m giving you an opportunity here. This is your chance to prove yourself. You are given full range to investigate the cases. You’ll report back to me every day as part of your training. I will guide you to where and how to solve this crime and many others. Now, are you up to it and ready to start?”

“But…Patrick…um…Chief. This is so sudden. I…” She was speechless, she didn’t want to do an investigation into a possible kidnapping. She didn’t want to handle cases that involved children. How could she get out of this? Did she really want to get out of this?

“Say yes so we can get started.”

“You sure about this?” She wasn’t, but she couldn’t tell him no. This was the kind of once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you didn’t turn down. It felt strange though; he never talked this fast, and he wanted her decision now.

“Yes, I’m sure. So, what do you say?”

“Chief, I’m not sure this is a good idea.”

“Why not?”

What could she tell him? “I’ve been away from police work a long time, and I’ve never been a detective. I was only in training to be one.”

“Your previous employer said that you were showing signs of being a good detective. Jade, I need a detective. I need fresh eyes, someone quick to analyze the situation and get to the bottom of this. I’m offering you a chance to prove you are the right person to do the job. Anyone else would jump at the opportunity. Why are you hesitating?”

“I…um…” She couldn’t tell him she didn’t want to work baby or children cases. You couldn’t be selective when you were a detective. You took all jobs, no matter how difficult or painful it was.

“Have you talked to the fire chief? Does he know?”

“Yes. I talked to him this morning. He’s going to hire someone to replace you.”

“What about the police commissioners?”

“I’ll deal with them.”

She stared at Patrick and swallowed a big lump in the back of her throat. A detective? Her heart hammered hard in her chest. Could she do it? If he knew her past, why would he even consider her for the job? Talk about a bombshell dropping. Couldn’t she have time to consider it?

But a little glimmer of hope sparked in her heart. So there was a chance for her to redeem herself? She’d be stupid to turn down the opportunity. “Okay. I’ll do the best I can.”

“Good.” Patrick stood up, pulled out a Bible, and said, “Place your hand on this and repeat after me.”

After she was sworn in, they sat back down and Patrick went over the second kidnapping with her and handed her the files.

“I want you to work with Clyde on this, as he’s been doing the legwork. Between this case, the first case, and a murder case, he’s been pulling double duty trying to handle everything. But before you go out anywhere, you check in with me and let me know what you and Clyde are doing.”

She wished she could say she’d do the murder case. “It looks like this second baby was taken the same way. The two cases are likely related. Did you have any evidence that we can use?”

“So far, no. CSI went to the second scene this morning to gather any trace evidence there, but we won’t know anything for a couple of days. When you investigated the case in Oklahoma City, how did you crack it?”

“I posed as a woman wanting to adopt a baby.”

“How did you know who to connect with?”

“It was a long shot. I started with the kidnapped baby’s mother, then it went to a person who knew a person who knew a person. Then I created an identity of a woman desperate to adopt. I made sure I stayed visible and willing to try anything to get a baby.”

“I see.”

Jade rose, walked to the door, and put her hand on the doorknob, but before opening it, she turned to him. “Are you sure you want me to do this?”

Patrick leaned back in his chair and stared at her as if he was reflecting on something. “Yes, I’m sure. There are a lot of things we need to discuss. But right now I need you to get on board with Clyde, quickly, and start working this case while it’s still hot.”

“Okay. Where do you want me to work?”

“The next room down the hall is the detectives’ squad room.” He gestured with his thumb. “Grab whatever desk and computer you want. Stop by the lock-up room and get Mike to assign you a gun.”

The case was the opportunity of a lifetime for her. It gave her the chance to prove to herself, to Patrick, and the whole world, that she could do the job. Would solving this help make up for the child whose life was taken because of what she did?

She took a deep breath, opened the door, and headed to the lock-up room. She had walked into the station today as a nine-one-one dispatcher, and was now walking out as a detective.

ABOUT CONSTANCE BRETES

I started writing contemporary romance and contemporary romance suspense fifteen years ago, and after multiple rejections, got my first contract for Delayed Justice, released in 2014.

I live in Basin, Montana, where three feline furballs own me and my husband and a dog that lives next door named Sara, who thinks she also lives with the Bretes family. I love the mountains that surround my home, I love basket weaving, jewelry making, and just visiting all the folks in the small community we live in.

I currently have seven books published and a number of other ones in various stages of edits. Right now, I’m working on a new book, called Roadside Love, a murder mystery/romance set in a small town in Wyoming. I have two other books that are at the end of their editing days and now at critique partners: Elkhorn In The Moonlight and Rocky River Gold. Both are small town romances.

Quick & Dirty By Whitley Cox

The best way to get over a millionaire is to get under a billionaire.

Humiliated and angry Parker Ryan is ready to erase every last trace of her ex from her mind, body, and soul. Of course she can be adventurous. Exciting. Sexy. No matter what he said. She needs an exorcism, and Tate McAllister and the island of Moorea in Tahiti are just the man and place to do it. Tate is perfect for the job: billionaire resort owner, scuba instructor, philanthropist and, let’s face it, sex god. So maybe the affair isn’t the wisest move when she has to write her damn feature piece and review the hotel, but if he’s ready and willing to wow her in and out of the bedroom for the next ten days, the fling will be worth it. Parker can get the job done and have Tate fulfill all her fantasies, and she won’t, repeat won’t fall in love with the man. Even if every part of her wants to.
ON THE RUN BY MEASHA STONE

She thought she could run, but he’d never let her get away.

Sarah Bennet walked has finally found the break in her career. The sort of story to win her a byline in a serious newspaper. The only problem is, the people in the story don’t want it told. And they are willing to do anything to stop her.
Jeremy has watched Sarah from the sidelines as she’s progressed in career as a journalist waiting for the moment that he can finally retake what he lost years ago. He will protect her. He will save her from her recklessness. And by the time he’s done, he will own her.
Carried Away by Jenna Bayley-Burke
Lust brought them together. Will love tear them apart?

Any woman would willingly lock lips with sexy Mateo Torres.
But probably not on stage.
During a lap dance.
At her ex’s bachelor party.

Any man would easily get wrapped up in Carrie Nielson.
But probably not with a crowd cheering them on.
For his last performance.
As an exotic dancer.

Mateo has a past as dark as his eyes, but the best way to convince everyone she hasn’t lost her damn mind is to pretend they’re lovers.
Until they’re not pretending.
Frozen- The Martini Lounge by Ursula Sinclair
Lani
Ever have that one perfect moment in time, when you know exactly what you’re supposed to do, who you’re supposed to be in life? Well, that had been me, and it certainly had lasted for more than a moment. I’d decided to pledge myself to God and help others in his name. Selfless, that was me
and I was weeks away from taking my final vows. Then something happened, I met someone and suddenly I questioned everything.

Rom

I’ve always lived my life on my terms. Granted, I never thought I’d grow up to be a male stripper. But what the hell, I made good money and now, I had a shot at something more. And the women. Yeah, I loved women but they came and went. I preferred it that way. Didn’t matter which of us left first, as long as one of us did. I didn’t do attachments. Then something happened. I’m no saint, but I saved someone and wanted an attachment.

Only to find out I could never have her.
