Evan released her hand and gestured toward a blanket that lay on the ground. “A midnight picnic under the stars?”

Kat beamed at him. “Sounds romantic.”

Evan sat down, tugging on Kat’s hand for her to join him. He set the bags down and opened them. In silence for a few minutes, they ate the cold meal. Evan relaxed back, lying down on the blanket with his hands behind his head. Kat stared down at him, and in the light from the flashlight, their eyes met.

On impulse, Kat leaned down and kissed his lips. One of his hands came up to caress her back. The heat from his mouth sent lust spiraling throughout her body. She climbed on top of him and ground her mound into his cock. His erec-tion sprang to life, and she rubbed her body up and down his length while they continued to kiss.

Evan framed her face in his hands and pressed soft kisses to her nose and cheeks. Never having felt so cherished be-fore, Kat sighed and sank down beside him, snuggling into his side. Both trying to catch their breath, they stared up at the stars through a canopy of leaves. The odd cloud floated

by, obscuring the moonlight from time to time.

“This is romantic,” Kat purred.

Evan turned his head to press a kiss to the side of her head. “Finally—something went right this evening.”

“Mm-hmmm…” She massaged circles onto his chest. The muscles she detected through his shirt demanded a closer look. “Why don’t we—”

The slap Evan delivered to the side of his cheek cut off her question. A high-pitched buzzing noise filled her ears. A pinprick of pain on her leg had her delivering a blow of her own. More buzzing and slapping of flesh ensued.

“Not really the kind of slapping I had in mind.” She jumped up, waving her hands around.

Evan stood, quickly snatching up the remnants of their food with the blanket. “Are you into that kind of thing?”

The flashlight tipped over, momentarily blinding Kat. “Ow,” she complained. “And yes—a good slap on the rear on occasion is acceptable.”

Evan tugged a strand of her hair.

“Hey!”

“Ass spanking on occasion, but no hair pulling,” he said. “Gotcha.”

Kat batted away another mosquito. “I didn’t say I didn’t like it. I didn’t even think we were there yet.” She slapped her forearm as another little bloodsucker attempted to make a meal out of her. “Can we just get out of here?” She bent over and retrieved the flashlight, then pointed it in the direc-tion she thought they’d come.

“Duly noted, and yes.”

They scurried back out of the trees and followed the fence back into the barnyard. Just as they reached the yard, a booming sound caused them both to shout.

Kat jumped into Evan’s arms and clung to him. “What the hell was that?” she shrieked

“That’s it, you asshole. You’re goin’ down.” Erik threw his full weight behind a punch that would’ve halted a freight train. But something stopped him dead. He paused, shocked and amazed. Somehow this waif managed to halt him at full throttle. Not an easy feat.

Erik’s lips hung open, his eyes wide when he saw his fist in Asher’s much smaller hand. His attention was caught and held by a surprisingly calm glare. Funny, he’d never noticed Asher had such weird eyes. Words escaped him as he fell into the scintillating beauty of the teen’s violet gaze. They were beautiful, haunting…and pained.

Erik paused, his breath taken hostage by the moment. A strangled cry escaped him when, in another blindingly unexpected turnaround, Asher kissed him. He wanted to pull away at first, especially since they had an audience, yet he didn’t. Some part of him wanted to stay. Asher’s lips were so soft, not even the chill of his lip ring could take away from the searing heat of the kiss.

Erik’s demeanor softened, and he uncurled his fist in Asher’s hand. Other parts of his anatomy stood up and took notice, too. He prayed nobody in the band saw that. Especially…well. No. No one was allowed to see.

All too soon the kiss ended, and Asher broke contact with a loud smacking sound. Erik stood in silence, his mind whirling while he retreated. His mouth opened and closed as he fought for words, but before he could utter any of them, Asher’s cool hand patted the side of his face in an almost patronizing manner, and with a cheeky wink he turned. Walking away, he called over his shoulder to his sister.

“I’m off, Dais. Can’t stand the boredom. Give me a ring when you’re ready to be picked up. Try not to die of excitement in my absence.”

Erik watched him go, stupefied and still frozen to the spot. He suddenly became aware of the unnatural silence around him. Reality crashed back and crushed him under a wave of panic. What the hell had he done? A warm hand landed on his shoulder, and he looked down into Daisy’s face.

“Sorry, Erik. He can be such a prick. You know he didn’t mean it, right? I promise you.”

“Are you all right?” Billy asked. His tone was genuine concern and one he didn’t want to deal with right now.

Their eyes met briefly. They had a history of their own beyond friendship. Like the times they’d smoked joints in his room. Not only had their demeanors relaxed, so had their inhibitions. They’d evaporated, in fact, to where they had not only kissed, but had given each other their first time, and a few more times beyond that.

Erik’s mind flooded with images of those days when they’d lived for their sleepovers—how buzzed they’d been, how good they’d felt, how right Billy’d felt in his mouth and his arms… It had started to go beyond just the physical, to something he couldn’t handle. There was a ton of baggage there that he didn’t want to think about anymore. Then this fucker kisses him…shit. He shuddered and forced his mind back to the present. That was his and Billy’s secret only. No one on earth needed to know he was gay. Like fucking hell they’d find out now.

“No. I’m not all right. Shit!” He glared at Daisy, daring her to have an excuse for her twin’s infuriating behavior. He stood back from the group. “Whatever. He’s just a prick trying to make a fool of me. Fine. Two can play that game.”

S L (Stephanie) Danielson began writing at the tender age of five. She knew it was her calling from the moment she put pen to paper. In her teens she began writing alternative works and the genre stuck. She created ever more elaborate tales and finally in her early 20’s years began to create works with her new love; male/male romance. She has since written more than 30 works (both solo and collaborations).

Cheryl Headford

Cheryl was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until she was 16, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. Her refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren’t so much fun to clean.

Cheryl has always been a storyteller. As a child, she’d make up stories for her nieces, nephews and cousin and they’d explore the imaginary worlds she created, in play.

Later in life, Cheryl became the storyteller for a re enactment group who travelled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as having an opportunity to run around hitting people with a sword, she had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of her own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.

It was here she began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news, and the storyteller the heart of the village, keeping the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that still wants to believe that it’s still there, somewhere.

In present times, Cheryl lives in a terraced house in the valleys with her son, dog, bearded dragon (called Smaug of course) and three cats. Her daughter has deserted her for the big city, but they’re still close. She’s never been happier since she was made redundant and is able to devote herself entirely to her twin loves of writing and art

While they’re dining, their gondola gets caught up in a traffic jam of sorts, plugging the canal entrance and forcing them to walk back to Nick’s palazzo.

When my husband and I visited Venice a few years ago, I was fascinated with a small corner of a canal off St. Mark’s Square. It was filled to overflowing with at least a dozen gondolas (and a lot of noise!) as the gondoliers jockeyed for prime positions to snag customers. That memory inspired Lyra and Nick’s romantic evening. I hope you enjoy it!

As Nicolas stood in the shadows, Lyra shifted and caught sight of him. When she did, she beamed and held out her hand. “Come here, Nick. You’re missing all the fun.”

“What’s up?”

“Well…I’m hoping you will be, lover…and very soon.” She wet her lips and squeezed his hand. “But I was referring to the Gondola Wars going on down there.” Gesturing toward the canal, she raised her wine glass and saluted the gondoliers on the canal below.

He grinned and slid into his chair, then leaned over to look below. Two boats were cruising the tiny canal, side-by-side. They’d apparently gotten stuck together in the narrows, but that didn’t deter the gondoliers. Each was pushing and prodding the other’s boat in an attempt to get free. Their passengers clung to each other as the gondolas rocked in their wake. While Nicolas watched, their own gondola got caught in the altercation. Their gondolier had untied his boat and drifted away from the other vessels, but ended up being just wide enough to snugly jam all three boats together, blocking the entrance to the canal.

“Looks like we’re walking home,” Nicolas commented.

“I hope not. I have no idea where we are. This city is like a maze.”

“No worries, I know exactly where the palazzo is.” He winked at her. “Stick with me, kid, I’ll get you places.”

Lyra squinted at him. “Isn’t that an old joke? I don’t remember the setup, though.”

“What did the stamp say to the envelope?”

Lyra giggled. “Oh…stick with me…I get it.”

By the time they finished their meal, she was grateful for the chance to walk off some of their food. They were holding hands, strolling the dark cobblestone streets, and stopping about every fifty feet to kiss.

“It’s a good thing I don’t live here,” she told Nicolas. “I’d be on a permanent diet. I adore pasta.”

“The meal was superb,” he agreed, “but you wouldn’t need to diet if you lived in Venice.”

“Why not?”

He stopped as they reached the crest of the small bridge they were crossing, then cupped the back of her head and drew her into a leisurely kiss that had her pulse thrumming. “Because I can think of plenty of ways to work it off. Say, by chasing you around the bedroom every night.”

“What makes you think I’d run?” She backed him against the time-worn limestone railing and leaned into him, grinding her pelvis against his erection. “I want you, Nick.”

“Hell, Lyra, you’re driving me crazy,” he said as his mouth descended over hers.

When they came up for air, his gaze roamed hungrily over her face. “If I didn’t think I’d get arrested, I’d hike up that pretty skirt of yours and take you right here on the bridge.”

“I’m not wearing panties, so if I didn’t think you’d be arrested, I’d probably let you do it.”

“Luke?” Maggie’s voice was husky with sleep.
“It’s all right, baby. Go back to sleep.”
The sheets rustled and the bedside lamp snapped on, creating a small pool of light that illuminated her tense face. “You’re leaving?”
He heard the disappointment in her voice, saw it in her dark eyes, even in the dim light.
“If I don’t leave now, my grandmother will know I’ve been with you all night. Harper and Ethan will see my truck here in the morning, and they’ll know we slept together.”
“Harper and Ethan are staying in Minneapolis tonight, but even if they were home, it wouldn’t matter. I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks, not even my family. We’re grownups now. We don’t have to sneak around to be together like we did when we were kids.” She lowered her gaze, her hands clutching the sheet to her breasts. “Unless you don’t want anyone to know. Unless you’d rather not be here.”
“Maggie—”
“It’s okay, really.” She looked away and shrugged a small shoulder. “It’s no big deal.”
He couldn’t leave her like this. He sat on the bed beside her and stroked her hair. “It’s a big deal to me. There’s nothing I want more than to stay, but it wouldn’t be fair to you.”
Her eyes flashed in disbelief. “Wouldn’t be fair to me? What are you talking about?”
“In a few weeks, after my mother is…gone, I’ll go back to my job in California. And you’ll be here.”
“And never the twain shall meet?”
“It’s not what I want, but it’s reality.”
“What about what I want, right here, right now? Maybe we don’t have forever. Nobody does. If I’ve learned anything from your mother’s illness, it’s that we can’t take anything for granted. We can’t let uncertainty and fear stop us. If we only have a short time together, so be it. At least, we’ll have had that time. I won’t regret it.”
She was amazing. She was still the strong, forthright, vibrant girl he’d fallen in love with that summer.
And he had loved her. Deeply. They’d been far too young to sustain a lasting relationship. But that didn’t mean he hadn’t loved her.
I still love her. I never stopped.

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. They reached her store and he stared at her car parked by the curb. “Harper doesn’t know where you live or anything about you. That means you’re safe for now, but he’ll probably search this area to find us. Stay cautious, okay? Drive your car from now on. Don’t walk anywhere.”

“Why are you avoiding my questions? You can tell me anything.”

“Not this. If you trust me, don’t ask those kinds of questions.” He tightened his fingers around her forearm as she tried to jerk free from his grip. “Listen to me, damn it. You mean a lot to me, but I can’t tell you this. At least not right now. That’s nothing against you. It’s all on me. I just need time to take care of this problem. Okay? I’m fucking stressed, in a shitload of pain, and I don’t need you to hound my ass.” He dropped his hand from her arm and scowled as though he just noticed the dirt and blood on his knuckles. “I’d like to go upstairs to clean up before you take me home. I don’t want Alan to know what happened.”

Mia dug through her purse with shaky hands, so angry she didn’t trust herself to speak.

He took the keys from her before the little pieces of metal slipped between her fingers, and he hugged her despite the grime on his skin and clothes.

Tears clogged her throat. Her mind screamed at her to push away from him, but the strength in his arms enveloped her and stole her will. His heartbeat soothed hers, and she no longer cared about his lies or if filth caked him.

At least not at the moment.

“I never meant for this to happen, Mia. I will fix this.”

“I know, but at what cost?” She pried her face from his chest to stare up at him. “You’re nothing if not determined, but I’m scared and confused. You have answers to my questions, but I won’t hound you for them as you so eloquently stated. I just thought we got past this. I thought you knew I would never insult or condemn you for whatever it is you did.”

“And I thought you knew not to push me too fucking hard.” His deep voice sent shivers of unease down her spine. “I have to keep certain parts of my past to myself.”

“Whatever.” Mia finally pushed against his chest for freedom and stomped to the stairwell door.

Amory was so engrossed in her thoughts she didn’t hear the approaching sound of bare feet, padding on the smooth wooden floor, until a deep groan broke through them and she looked up to see Jackson. His mussed, dark blond hair was shot through with strands of gold in the overhead lighting.

The man was incredibly made. His arms stretching up and behind his head caused the bottom of his t-shirt to lift a few teasing inches, revealing a tantalizing glimpse of a tanned, rock-hard stomach. They weren’t the sculpted lines that came from the gym, but powerful, solid muscles. A fine trail of hair led the way to the top of his loose navy shorts. As he reached the bottom of the stairs, her gaze was transfixed.

His legs were long and thick, every muscle rippling as he moved down the stairs into the hallway. A rush of heat shot through her body, setting every nerve alight. Her stomach rolled as she absorbed the sight while a little lower everything tightened and tingled. She’d hoped that her memory had been flawed, tinted by the rose-colored lenses of what she had long since accepted was her first love. That clearly wasn’t the case. Rather than letting himself go he had become more impressive. The slenderness of youth had filled out, living up to the promise of overwhelming masculinity.

His lean muscles had broadened, and whilst the softness of youth had faded from his features, it had left a strong profile in its wake. Jackson had grown up all man. She gulped, heat flooding her.

The good feeling from her run was replaced by a more base desire to touch every inch of his perfect body. To pull it hard against her own and feel those muscular planes mold against her. She unconsciously licked her lips as she watched him.

As she met his eyes, the feeling of heat evaporated, replaced by a harsh chill of dread that sank through to her toes. His emotions were playing across his face and it was clear that, despite her DCI’s reassurances, Jackson had joined the dots and figured out who she was. The recognition clearly shocked him as his whole body jolted abruptly to a stop.

Unable to move, she stared helplessly as he began to walk toward her, his face a mix of unreadable emotions. As he reached out, her body began to respond to the heat that rolled off of him. The scent of his skin washed over her, but she moved back defensively. It was a tactical mistake, giving away that she knew who he was, that she had known all along.

“Amory?” he whispered, hope shining oddly through that one word.

Almost imperceptibly shaking her head, all her professionalism flew out the window, and with her heart sinking she managed a stuttered whisper, “N-n-no… No, you’re wrong. I’m Olivia.”

No amount of training was going to get her through this. Despite her only half-admitted hope that he’d see who she really was, Amory knew too much was at stake for this to happen, but it had. Now she had to endure the awful consequences of him recognizing her, the hatred that would follow this moment.

Tanya Jean Russell writes romantic suspense and lives in England. She is married to an amazing Elvis & Neil Diamond Tribute artist, thanks to whom she has a house full of jumpsuits & trophies. Something which is, of course, a source of much embarrassment to her two teenage children.

Her eyes flashed in disbelief. “Wouldn’t be fair to me? What are you talking about?”

“In a few weeks, after my mother is…gone, I’ll go back to my job in California. And you’ll be here.”

“And never the twain shall meet?”

“It’s not what I want, but it’s reality.”

“What about what I want, right here, right now? Maybe we don’t have forever. Nobody does. If I’ve learned anything from your mother’s illness, it’s that we can’t take anything for granted. She was amazing. She was still the strong, forthright, vibrant girl he’d fallen in love with that summer.

And he had loved her. Deeply. They’d been far too young to sustain a lasting relationship. But that didn’t mean he hadn’t loved her.

Okay so what if the series starts out contemporary, then mid-way through takes a sudden medieval, time-travel twist, but then switches back to contemporary, then back to historical.

Am I losing you? Sort of like tennis match, right. Sore neck?

I rush on, excitedly sensing the “You can’t do that” to come—

Me: What if there are also m/f and m/m pairings? And m/m/m, f/f, and m/f/f encounters. That ticks the erotic boxes, right?

Publisher: But readers who read only m/f won’t appreciate the m/m content and m/m readers won’t tolerate the m/f components.

Me: But there are also readers like me, who just plain love to read and will read anything. No matter the genre, sub-genre or pairing(s).

Publisher: True… but… that really cuts down on your reader base.

I learned a long time ago, you can’t please everyone

Wringing hands — take a deep breath —

Me: There might also … possibly be … borderline infidelity?

Publisher: Hard No! Cheating in a romance! No way, no how. There’s no such thing as borderline. You’ll lose your audience, for sure. Not to mention get some nasty comments on Goodreads and in reviews.

Me: Okay, so maybe it’s not “true romance” then. We’ll adjust the tags and genre categories, even put a warning along with the blurb. Perhaps it’s a dark erotic paranormal series/saga with romantic elements.

But seriously—I justify—can having sex with a ghost who has taken possession of your boyfriend’s body, technically be considered cheating? Especially when said boyfriend is also cavorting with a female ghost who has overtaken the girlfriend? Not cheating, in my book. — LOL! See what I did there—All bodies used in the sexual acts are still that of the boyfriend and girlfriend, how can that be infidelity?

Publisher: Splitting hairs.

Sheepishly, I continue—full disclosure

Me: Though… in the third instalment, The Fall of Cairnnon Castle, the lines really get blurred when there are brothers involved. Twin brothers, no less. Chiselled, rugged, Irishmen, fighting for the love of the same girl. And, um, this book sort of verges on horror, too.

Publisher: You’re pushing it. There are just way too many genres, sub-genres and pairings.

Me: Is this a bad time to mention the demons?

Publisher: Now let me get this straight. You are proposing a dark erotic paranormal romance, that isn’t a romance in the true sense, with a contemporary, historical, time-travel…

Me: Mhh-hmm, and U.S. and Irish settings.

Publisher: Dark, erotic, paranormal, contemporary, historical, time-travel, horror series, with m/f and m/m pairings, along with m/m/m, f/f and m/f/f encounters, which also incorporates demons, ghosts and supernatural possession, set in the U.S. and Ireland. Have I got that right?

Poised on the edge of my seat, I nod.

Me: Oh and cliff-hangers… nervous laughter…

Me: Well, most of it.

Me: Much more!
